  • F-35 spotted nose-down on runway

    f-35 nosegear
NWF Daily News reports an F-35 was spotted nose-down on the runway by a passing motorist Wednesday afternoon. It experienced an in-flight emergency, according to a press release from the 33rd Fighter Wing.

The pilot returned to Eglin Air Force Base and landed safely. The front nose gear collapsed after the plane was parked, the press release said.

Firefighters responded immediately and also could be seen by passing motorists.

    The pilot was not injured.

The extent of damage to the F-35A Lightning II was not immediately available.

Apologize for the picture quality- no doubt taken from a cell phone- but that’s what was available. Glad the pilot was unhurt, and I’m sure the damage will buff right out.
    Or not.

  • Always Check the Label

    I love stuff like this.

    https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2018/08/20/boot-maker-jailed-for-selling-the-military-chinese-made-boots-with-made-in-the-usa-labels/

The former head of the leading boot making company of the U.S. military was recently sentenced to federal prison for fraud after a scheme in which he imported Chinese-made boots labeled with “USA” to pass off as American-made.

Vincent Lee Ferguson, 66, of Knoxville, Tennessee, was sentenced to more than three years in prison for the contract fraud earlier this month.

The former president and chief executive officer will join his Wellco Enterprises, Inc. co-workers, former Senior Vice President of Sales Matthew Lee Ferguson, 41, and former Director of Marketing and Communications, Kerry Joseph Ferguson, 36, who were sentenced in June to six months in prison, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Tennessee.

Under the Berry Amendment, U.S. military uniform items must be manufactured in the United States. The company has been the lead boot supplier for the Department of Defense for more than 70 years.

Between 2006 and 2012 alone, DoD paid more than $138 million for combat boots.

Ferguson and his executive team’s Chinese import scheme began as early as December 2008 and lasted through August 2012, a time in which they sold more than $8.1 million worth of the fraudulent boots, according to the release.

Two shipments of fraudulent “USA” boots were seized by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Customs and Border Protection. On each pair, Ferguson and his team had the manufacturer tear away “Made in China” tags prior to shipment.

“Falsely selling our military millions of dollars of combat boots by saying they were ‘Made in the USA’ when they are actually Chinese-knockoffs not only defrauds the government, but also defrauds the American soldier,” said Defense Criminal Investigative Service Assistant Special Agent in Charge Robert Hammer. “Our soldiers rely on their equipment, from their guns to their boots, to protect this country, and counterfeit products could fail at a moment when they need them the most.”

So there it is: check the label to see if it’s been switched. Danner makes some military-style boots, but if one of their products is made in China, they say so. Most manufacturing of that kind has gone overseas, anyway. Could be why some of it wears out too quickly, too.

  • Tuesday Morning Feel Somewhat Good Stories

Looks like the Soviet didn’t wake up Dave Hardin, so the usual crime stories haven’t come up yet. Much of this is local, so please bear with me.

From the Bannockburn PD: A Wisconsin man was charged with aggravated felony misuse of a weapon by the Bannockburn, IL, police.

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/deerfield/news/ct-dfr-blotter-bannockburn-gun-charge-tl-0823-story.html#nt=oft13a-1gp1

James L. Blackwell, 24, of Milwaukee, was originally arrested July 22, according to a Bannockburn Police report.

Police and the Deerfield Bannockburn Fire Protection District were sent to a gas station at the southeast corner of Waukegan and Half Day roads to investigate smoke coming from a vehicle, according to the report.

During their investigation, police learned the car was stolen, according to the report. An officer safety alert was issued because Blackwell is affiliated with the Gangster Disciples and had a criminal history with weapons and assault offenses, police said.

Per the article, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s office approved his being charged with a lack of an FOID. I’m not sure that will stick, if Blackwell is a resident of Wisconsin, but imagine being a gangbanger and trying to get an FOID. Think about it for a moment. If that doesn’t make you fall down laughing, nothing will.

I’ve been following this since it first appeared, and I’m glad to see this individual termed “unfit” by the legal system. He and his dingbat wife kept their 10-year-old daughter locked in the basement of their home because they thought she was demonically possessed. Unfit in the state of Illinois means he has to spend time in a state-approved facility before he faces trial.

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/lake-county-news-sun/news/ct-lns-swopes-fitness-hearing-0822-story.html

In other words, she was probably a normal, energetic, bright young girl and they couldn’t deal with it.

And why we’re getting Chicago news from the UK is beyond me, but this story has 60 people getting shot over the weekend, 29 people getting arrested for gun violence, and CPI Police Chief saying it’s the same people doing this.

    https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/chicago-shootings-latest-violence-gun-crime-police-2018-child-a8499726.html

Also one of the shooting victims was a 3-year-old child, and the likelihood that any of these guns were bought by FOID gun owners is ludicrous.

  • Pentagon Restricts Use of GPS Trackers to Find Yef

The Pentagon is restricting troops’ use of electronic fitness trackers and other electronic tracking devices.

There is a security problem that apparently did not occur to the Eager Beavers who think there are no Bad People in the world who want to find you and kill you. Perhaps they need to be put into a war zone with a GPS microchip embedded in their posteriors, just like in those Bond movies.

Per this AP article:  https://apnews.com/d29c724e1d72460fbf7c2e999992d258  military personnel and other defense personnel (an undefined term) deployed to sensitive bases or high risk areas will not be allowed to use electronic fitness trackers or cell phone applications (“apps” to you gadgeteers) that can/will/are likely to reveal their whereabouts.

No…. Really??? That thought didn’t occur to anyone at the 5-sided parking garage on the Potomac? And these people get a paycheck?

‘The memo, obtained by The Associated Press, stops short of banning the fitness trackers or other electronic devices, which are often linked to cellphone applications or smart watches and can provide the users’ GPS and exercise details to social media. It says the applications on personal or government-issued devices present a “significant risk” to military personnel, so those capabilities must be turned off in certain operational areas.

‘Under the new order, military leaders will be able to determine whether troops under their command can use the GPS function on their devices, based on the security threat in that area or on that base.  (Okay, but what if you don’t want to use one at all? Are you going to get spanked for not being socially electronic? Is your paycheck going to be fined?)

“These geolocation capabilities can expose personal information, locations, routines, and numbers of DOD personnel, and potentially create unintended security consequences and increased risk to the joint force and mission,” the memo said.” – AP article quote.

This comes from the revelation in January that an online tracking map titled Global Heat Map, created by Strava, a GPS tracking company, was pinpointing the locations of subscribers through satellite uplinks to Strava’s fitness service.

This means that we can no longer track whether or not Yef is in the hallway running the floor buffer or trekking across the grinder to get ice cream.

The other side of this coin is this questionable need to be electronically connected to everything in the world. My phone annoys me enough when it rings and doesn’t tell me who is robocalling me. Is it really, truly necessary to be so digitized that you can be followed by a satellite uplink whether you like it or not?

Like I said above, what if you just don’t want the damned thing in the first place?

  • Marines scavenging old parts to finish their new Joint Light Tactical Vehicle

I am always shocked that this kind of thing is considered news.  As one Air Force General once said, “If its not broken, stolen, or leaking hydraulic fluid Marines won’t use it”.    According to Military Times:

The Marine Corps‘ long-awaited Joint Light Tactical Vehicle is expected to start hitting the fleet next year, but not all of its parts will be fresh off the assembly line.

A harvesting effort is underway to salvage Humvee parts that can be fitted onto the JLTV. The strategy has long been part of the plan as the service phases out the unpopular Humvee for the JLTV, a faster vehicle with better armor to protect Marines from roadside bombs and rocket-propelled grenades.

See, Marines don’t steal things from other branches of the service…they “Harvest” them.

“It’s our responsibility … to be good stewards of taxpayer money, so if we have equipment that is in good condition, we should go ahead and use it,” Kevin Marion, a logistics management specialist in Infantry Weapons, said in the release.

I wonder if SNCO’s are still teaching Lt’s the meaning of “plausible deniability” when it comes to “harvesting” equipment.

  • New Helo Style for Marines

The nearby USMC Aviation Depot is trying out a new, streamlined air hull configuration, which they insist on flying over my house.

This sleek, shiny, brightly colored style has been given the name ‘Skyfish’, owing to its quickly taking to the air as if it were born there.

The traditional helo rotors are shipped and locked above the cockpit and fuselage and are designed to be used only in emergencies.

In flight, the bird has two rear paddles to propel it through the air, taking advantage of air currents and rising air bubbles, very much akin to the previously tested Ornithopters which were designed to be used in deserts like the Sahara and Arrakis.  The Skyfish configuration has been found to be very adaptable to flatlands, dunes, drumlin ranges and Silurian cave zones.

The electronics have been updated to include worm, wookie and Cardassian detection, all at more than ten thousand feet of distance. The cargo load is currently rated at 5,750 kilograms (2.2 pounds/KG), which allows for the inclusion of heavy weapons such as the A&P-51 assault laser mortar launcher and its accompanying load of mortars and pineapples, plus lunch and cold drinks for the crew.

Unlike the currently popular Sikorsky (below), now being used to increase the Aviation Dept’s cash flow for aviation fuel and air time by delivering Rosati’s pizzas and Peapod grocery orders, the Skyfish runs on what is popularly termed ‘green fuel’, e.g., alcohol left over from parties, or strained vegetable oil from the base galley’s used oil drums. Rather than just toss it, recycling these substances is becoming a big part of the military’s cost-savings programs.

It also keeps the ecohippies at arm’s length, off the base.

  • Army, Navy, and Marines To Get Hogs

Just announced this week, the A-10 aircraft program will begin to include Navy, Army and Marine Corps pilots. Distribution of pilot slots will coincide with production of new aircraft, now under contract negotiation, designated as A-10N, A-10R, and A-10M. USAF craft will be redesignated A-10A.

While dearly beloved by USAF pilots as the venerable Warthog, the current generation of USAF pilots in training has hinted repeatedly at their desire to “share the glory” of the Warthog with their counterparts in the other service branches.

Accordingly, since the Air Force is searching for a new contractor to build new wing sets https://www.military.com/dodbuzz/2018/01/25/air-force-searching-new-company-re-wing-10s.html and the plan to retire the program has currently been blocked, http://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/17764/usaf-official-in-charge-of-a-10s-says-re-wing-program-is-not-going-to-happen , a newer and slightly revised model of the original A-10 airframe will be released for each service branch, with upgraded missiles and guidance systems, increased fuel tank volume, wider seats for female Navy pilots, and new nicknames. Among other improvements the planes may include CB and AM/FM access to keep bored pilots from dozing off during target practice runs.

  • Attention on Deck! Listen Up!

In the wake of last week’s heinous episode of destruction of human lives, and the howling to “DO SOMETHING” that predictably succeeded it, I spent some time digging up some information.

There are at least eleven (11 federal statues on the books regarding guns and control, including the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. – Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_law_in_the_United_States

Since there are 50 states, there is gun legislation specific to each state which should certainly be sufficient to prevent crimes, shouldn’t it? There is a chart at the bottom of this Wiki link for each state. I don’t know how up to date it is, but the charts do summarize the state laws. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_laws_in_the_United_States_by_state

In all of this, in the screaming, frantic screaming to DO SOMETHING, the hysterics and fear underlying this squawking are not being addressed.  Don’t misunderstand me. Fear generates anger, which generates this scrambling call to ‘DO SOMETHING!’, when there is already plenty of ‘SOMETHING’ done and in place.

This is never addressed by the media because they can milk the fear and agony caused by these events into oblivion, and they know it. They count on it. They should be barred from doing surveys and interviews until the people who commit these crimes are arrested and awaiting trial.

If you will recall the social morons who twittered out Tsarnaev’s mugshot after he was caught, in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing, thousands of teenaged girls couldn’t believe he was one of the Boston Marathon bombers because he was too cute. This was milked to death, as was the search to find him, and the frantic scramble by media mavens to get in the way of law enforcement so that they could get the story. And what happened? Who got blamed for that? The pressure cookers were blamed for the Boston Marathon bombing. Tsarnaev was just a part of the sideshow. Pressure cooker purchases were monitored. Anyone who bought more than one was suspect.

McVeigh and Nichols used a rented truck and farming chemicals and kerosene to build devastating bombs that blew away most of the Murragh Building in Oklahoma City, and killed and/or injured hundreds of people. Once they were caught, truck rental was blamed for a while for that tragedy. And farming chemicals – that was monitored, too.

Not so very long ago, a bunch of disgruntled idiots with a hair up their asses hijacked four passenger planes fully loaded with passengers and fuel, and used them to kill thousands of people in three different locations. Thousands of people. All planes were grounded, because the planes were at fault, weren’t they? (If you can’t detect sarcasm in that, you are dead between the ears.) Yes, and back in the 1990s, a bomb tucked away in a radio buried in a suitcase blew up a Pan Am passenger jet over Scotland, so radios were to blame for that, once that was figured out.

We’ve got the crazy bastards who took guns to Columbine High School and shot their classmates, so the guns were at fault there, not the teenaged hellions who committed those crimes. The nutball who shot up the movie theater in Aurora, CO, killing 12 and wounding 70 others wasn’t responsible because he was crazy, right? No, it wasn’t his fault. It was the guns’ fault that he planned that for weeks, maybe months ahead. Despite warnings by many people, there was never any attempt to stop him before he carried out his threats. The fact that he’s still a whack job is immaterial.

All of these criminals gave out warnings and nothing – not ONE DAMNED THING – was done about it.

In Orlando, FL, the nightclub Pulse became a slaughterhouse because one antisocial shithead coward decided to use it as a place to shoot fish in a barrel. But it was the guns he used that were blamed for that, not the fact that he hated everyone in the world, including himself. And that nutball who shot Congressman Scalise and tried to do the same to others – was he really blamed for it? I don’t think so. The focus was on what kinds of guns he used and where he got them, not so much on his hatred of GOPer politicians. That shooter was a Democrat, you know. He was out to get GOPers, so the guns were to blame for that, too, if the media reports were to be believed. Ditto the whack job at Las Vegas – it was the guns and the bump stocks that were to blame for the injuries and deaths, not the shooter who created panic.

So this latest episode of one freak taking his anger and self-hatred out on everyone around him turns into another circus of blaming the object, a gun, an inanimate object which can’t act without an enabler, instead of blaming the jackass who committed the crime.

I’m going to blame politicians on both sides of the political fence for this, especially those with the biggest mouths and the most pressing need to stand at a microphone in front of a TV camera and threaten the rest of us with a dictatorship, because if we let them get away with it, that’s where we are headed.

Why do they do this? Well, part of it is the attention they get. Part of it is the money that it generates for them – yes, it does – and part of it is because the sooner they can get rid of the one thing they fear most, an American populace that is full of free people who can think for themselves, the happier they will be. They might even say they’re afraid of being assassinated, although I can’t think of even one of those attention-whoring idiots that’s worth the cost of a bullet. It doesn’t matter one whit that we can do quite well without them. They could all just lock their office doors and go home and not one of us would miss them, but they have to have that limelight.

What does matter is this: the US Constitution gives us certain inalienable rights and one of those is to have the means of defending ourselves against tyrants. And everyone of those stumpsucking jerks in Congress is a potential tyrant. Think about that for a second.

Not one of them has blamed the shooter in this most recent. If they did that – blame the human – they’d have to admit they are failures and all the legislation passed on gun control has been pure, unadulterated failure because no one enforces it. Those recent reports that NICS missed posting 1100 people in the ‘no guns’ list are evidence of that. So they blame the gun, the inanimate object and the bump stock, also inanimate, which the shooter used, instead of blaming the live human scumbag who did the damage.

Well, we are not a nation of sheep, no matter what the Congress Critters think. We have a right to demand that they enforce the laws already in place and stop wasting our tax money on legislating more of this nonsense until they ensure that enforcement of existing laws happens.

If they are not going to do what they were hired to do – and remember, it’s supposed to be a temp job, not permanent – then fire their asses and start over from scratch.

They work for US. We need to let them know that by firing them if they don’t perform.

They all need to be reminded that this country belongs to US, not to them. They just work here.
