Army, Navy, and Marines To Get Hogs

Just announced this week, the A-10 aircraft program will begin to include Navy, Army and Marine Corps pilots. Distribution of pilot slots will coincide with production of new aircraft, now under contract negotiation, designated as A-10N, A-10R, and A-10M. USAF craft will be redesignated A-10A.

While dearly beloved by USAF pilots as the venerable Warthog, the current generation of USAF pilots in training has hinted repeatedly at their desire to “share the glory” of the Warthog with their counterparts in the other service branches.

Accordingly, since the Air Force is searching for a new contractor to build new wing sets https://www.military.com/dodbuzz/2018/01/25/air-force-searching-new-company-re-wing-10s.html and the plan to retire the program has currently been blocked, http://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/17764/usaf-official-in-charge-of-a-10s-says-re-wing-program-is-not-going-to-happen , a newer and slightly revised model of the original A-10 airframe will be released for each service branch, with upgraded missiles and guidance systems, increased fuel tank volume, wider seats for female Navy pilots, and new nicknames. Among other improvements the planes may include CB and AM/FM access to keep bored pilots from dozing off during target practice runs.

        1. That is a great tune the way they did it.
It was great hearing Queen do it and this rendition is just as much fun !!!

    4. Ex-PH2

It gets better as the plot plods along. The next one should make someone’s heads explode.

      1. CDR_D

You’re naughty, EX. But that just makes you all the more appealing.

        1. Ex-PH2

          I do endeavor to persevere.

I’ve always felt that there weren’t enough “Josey Wales” references on this website.

              1. 2/17 Air Cav

I agree. There are many great scenes in that movie and it’s laced with humor. The ending is very, very cool.

          2. desert

Chief Dan George would be proud you thought of him 😉

            1. HMC Ret

Eastwood in a recent interview said he would like to do another movie.

            2. Ex-PH2

Eastwood is probably one of the few LaLaLand producers who doesn’t think inside the Box of Fear.

N.B.: Any time I can, I will quote Chief Dan George. He’s had some good lines thrown at him and made the most of them.

  2. Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

Hopefully they won’t fix anything that isn’t broken with the new production program.

      lol. got him

    1. Ex-PH2

It’s what I live for, Mick!

Sorry I couldn’t find a photo of an A-10 to use. You can imagine how I wanted one, too. 🙂

    Who? Exactly.

I have not forgotten them. They have a special thing I’m working on. 🙂

    Well played, Ex!

    1. Ex-PH2

They keep flying over my house. I have to do something for them.

  8. jim h

    I almost got a chub, too….

    well done, love.

    1. Ex-PH2

Thank you. I am to please.

There are some Roman Army subjects to be relayed, too.

  9. Sapper3307

Never gonna happen, they will chopped up before that happens.
Think F35 can do it all.

    1. David

As long as it doesn’t take more than 200 rounds or loitering for more than 15 minutes.

  10. The Other Whitey

    Wouldn’t that have been nice?

    1. Ex-PH2

      Yep!

  11. Combat Historian

It’s too bad this ain’t true; Army and Marines could really use a couple of hundred additional new A-10s for COIN CAS work…

    1. USMC Steve

There was a practically perfect CAS bird in our inventory already. The Skyraider. Make new ones of those and enjoy them.

      1. AW1Ed

For those scratching heads, wondering what USMC Steve is posting:

        a1

A-1H, call sign “Sandy” just a great CAS and CSAR bird from days gone by.

        1. Special mention was given in the book, “We Were Soldier’s once, and young” of the Sandy’s. One was shot down early in the battle of Ia Drang Valley, I believe the pilot was awarded a DFC for his heroic actions of that battle.
I’m no expert on it but I do think that is what happened.
A lot different reading the book and watching the movie, a lot different…
It was still a good movie to me as it played the American Soldiers in that battle as the heroic men they were, every last one of them…

        2. 11B-Mailclerk

Skyraided, its all that, and nuclear capable! (Well, once anyway……)

          1. 11B-Mailclerk

            Ack… “Skyraider”.

Auto-corrupt is a sun off beach.

And a Mother Forklift as well.

      2. FuzeVT

Skyraiders are one of my favorites. Damn right – let’s get those back in the air!!

        1. Ex-PH2

How about an updated version that makes the Warthog pilots green with envy?

  12. Atkron

You sure you don’t write for Duffel Blog in your spare time?

    1. Ex-PH2

      Not yet. Perhaps some day….

      I can dream, can’t I?

  13. Dean

Transferring A-10’s to the Army was going to happen in the early 90’s until they came into thier own in Desert Storm

    1. Ex-PH2

  14. NormanS

    You’re eighteen days late! 😛

Why not some Sirius XM Radio instead.

    3. 11B-Mailclerk

Breaker one nine good buddies! Where do you want the eggs?

  16. Some Guy

Awwww man, you really got my hopes up for a second. I knew something was up when the USAF pilots were willing to share the glory. They’d sooner give up their oversized sunglasses than let the other services play with their toys. Well played!

    1. Ex-PH2

      Thank you!

  17. Roh-Dog

    My poor Freedom Boner…
Hot and bothered until I realized it could never happen.
    Damn you Ex!
    Begrudgingly, good job.

    1. Ex-PH2

      I am honored, Roh-Dog!

  18. Yef

I was like, “WTF? They are going to expend money building an obsolete frame with zero survivability on the current battlefield agaisnt a near peer?”
Then I got to the part about fat navy female pilots, and I realized I had gotten burnt.

    1. Ex-PH2

“I realized I had gotten burnt.” Thank you, Yef. Please spread the word. There is more to come.

    2. Reverend Pointyhead

      Cheese dick.

  19. Yef

Seriously, the only use I can see for the A10 is to convert them into drones, and that would cost money.

    1. 11B-Mailclerk

Is not a fighter, dummy. The the fighters take care of the “peer” fighters while the A-10 kills stuff on the groud.

In which role it is one of the most survivable things we ever put in the air.

      1. Yef

What? A-10 can’t shoot down airplanes?
What the hell is the big gun for?

        Worthless.

        1. Instinct

Actually, the A-10 has shot down an aircraft in air to air combat.

      1. Yef

        My 1SG drinks tea.

        1. 11B-Mailclerk

          That would explain much.

    3. Mick

Spoken precisely like someone who has never needed effective Close Air Support, and who also doesn’t understand a single thing about military aviation.

      Stay in your lane.

      1. Yef

I know a lot about military aviation. I watch History Channel. Military airplanes carry bombs were regular airplanes carry passengers. There is one that even have a cannon on one side.
They are modular designed, and can carry bombs or airborne infantry depending on the mission.
Jet fighters are different though. They have 2 pilots and take pictures at enemy airplanes.

        1. AW1Ed

          Words fail me.

          1. Reverend Pointyhead

I’m suspicious someone among us is Yef for shits and grins to fill the void a particular toxic colon who shall remain unnamed left.

Then again, Yef is harmless and I think he means well in his own mind. I can forgive that.

            1. AW1Ed

              “I can forgive that.”

Me too, Padre. I’ll leave it there.

            2. 11B-Mailclerk

              -mostly- harmless.

Yef does occasionally make a quip of quality.

            3. A Proud Infidel®™️

That toxic personality you speak of just did all he could to piss everyone off, Yef merely spouts off some really airheaded comments.

        2. Ex-PH2

Gun cameras on war planes have been around since just before World War II.
Gliders can carry equipment, munitions and/or troops. The WACO CG-4A and Horsa were famous for this.
Fighter jets frequently have only ONE person (pilot) in the cockpit, depending on which configuration or “type” is under discussion.

        3. rgr769

We are pleased to see that you have a high degree of military aviation knowledge. Have you flown in one of them thar aeroplanes since you left the Holler.

          1. 11B-Mailclerk

I think he occasionally flies the ID-10T variant.

  20. 26Limabeans

You forgot the civilian model the A-10SEL.

    1. Ex-PH2

      That’s for pizza deliveries, 26Limabeans.

    2. AW1Ed

That would be the A-10LTD model, surround sound, XM radio, heated leather seats, 20 inch rims, rear backup camera, the works!

      1. 11B-Mailclerk

Hang a spare wheel on the tail and call it a Continental.

Add chrome trim, three inch whitewalls, and purple paint scheme for the “Urban warfare” version.

      2. Ex-PH2

Yeah, but where are the gun mounts?

  21. USAFRetired

Back in the 84-85 timeframe there were a number of initiatives going on at the highest levels of the Defense Bureacracy. One of them entailed transferring PATRIOT from the Army to the Air Force, another entailed transferring the A-10 from the USAF to the Army. I’ve forgotten most of the others. The only one I’m aware of that came to fruition involved competing Army and Air Force programs (SOTAS) and PAVE MOVER which became the Joint STARS program

    1. Ex-PH2

A lot of things changed and were moved around back then. I hope it’s better now.

    2. Cris

When the A-10 was selected, there was talk of a lawsuit by a company (don’t remember which)claiming that there prop driven plane was just as good, if not better, but the USAF was favoring jet powered jets.
      Anybody remember any more?

      1. Cris

        …their…

        1. Cris

..jet powered planes. lol as opposed to piston powered jets

          words fail me today

          1. Ex-PH2

You’re okay. Have some pizza, put your feet up, and throw a DVD with the fight scenes from “Gladiator” into the player.

            1. AW1Ed

Do you like gladiator movies, Cris?

              *grin*

      2. USAFRetired

        Cris,

The problem with that story is both aircraft in the fly off completion for the new USAF CAS aircraft were turbine powered jets.

If you look at the SU-25 Frogfoot it appears the Soviets stole the plans for the loser of the CAS competition.

There’s an old saying in military aviation… If its Grumman it has to be ugly. There is a school of thought that the problem was contagious, thus the reason the A-10 is so homely since the Fairchild plant shared Long Island with the Grumman Iron works at Bethpage.

        1. 11B-Mailclerk

The F6F and F-14 are ugly? Bah!

Then again, I thought “Warthog” was ironic, not descriptive of that beautiful A-10 bird.

          1. USAFRetired

            Yes the F-14 is ugly, as are the S-2F,E-1, E-2A/B/C/D, A-6, EA-6.

            1. 6654

Hey. Don’t be knockin my Intruders. So ugly they’re pretty. Y’all were just jealous y’all didn’t have them. Lol.
On one squadron’s T-shirt it said “Penetrates deeper. Delivers a bigger load.” (Probably not a PC motto these days.)

  22. TF-BA

You had me until the point where I found myself thinking “wow what a great idea” and then I knew it was bullshit. The good idea fairy never gifts real good ideas, just horrible ones that look shiny at a distance and function like the green weenie.

    1. Ex-PH2

I’m working on getting the deception right up to the very end.

      Stay tuned.

Marines with A-10s? I’m practically giddy!!

  25. Green Thumb

I would be curious to see the Hog land on a carrier….

    1. Ex-PH2

Well, aircraft carrier flight decks are about 1,094 feet long +/-, but they use catapults to launch the planes and arresting cables to halt the landings, so it would probably work out okay, IF the A-10 configuration was altered to allow the wings to fold like the Skyraider.

      1. USAFRetired

        PH2

Maybe not the first time but before long on a two wire or three wire trap, the pilot could watch one or the other or both of his engines continue flying past the cockpit after the rest of the bird came to a stop.

Standard procedure on the angled deck carriers is to cob the power to it in impact so in case they miss a wire and become a bolter they can get back airborne.
