  • From the Road

    I’m back on the road again for a bit. So that means you all get lucky – articles from me may be somewhat limited for the next 2 or 3 weeks. (smile)

    Someone asked me if I’d be playing Willie Nelson’s “On the Road Again” during the trip. Probably not; I never was a huge Willie Nelson fan. My taste in music tends rock vice country.

    But this tune did hit the stereo already.  Kinda apropos, IMO.

    One problem: it was kinda hard to keep from pressing down a bit too much on the accelerator while that was playing. (smile)

    The band did some good work in the 1980s. For representative selection of their best work during that decade, give a listen to their 1990 hits album Standards. Several tracks there are excellent – especially tracks 11(“Sold Me Down the River”) and  12 (“Devolution Workin’ Man Blues”).

    Y’all take care.

  • Patrick Mandeville was not a Green Beret

    Patrick Mandeville was not a Green Beret

    Someone sent us this article from the Twin Cities, Pennsylvania Morning Times in which they report that a local group presented a “Quilt of Valor” to Patrick Mandeville for his service in Vietnam;

    For 1969 Waverly High School graduate Patrick Mandeville — who served in Vietnam as a Green Beret — this honor came in the form of a patriotic quilt, made by Sharon Slater from Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOV)….[Annmarie] Allaire said Mandeville earned a Purple Heart, Silver Star and two Bronze Stars for his service, which lasted from 1969 to 1972.

    Well, in my opinion, after looking at his records, he certainly deserves a “Quilt of Valor”, he did serve with the 1st Cavalry Division in Vietnam from December 1970 – December 1971, he was assigned to Hotel Company Rangers after several months with 5/7th Cavalry. To be a “Green Beret”, he’d need at least some parachute training, but that’s not in the file. He does have an Arcom with a valor device and a single Bronze Star Medal, but no Purple Hearts or a Silver Star;

    Do with this what you want – he didn’t make any claims directly in the story, but he didn’t correct the author, either. The ladies had to get that information from somewhere. I’m just correcting the historical record.

  • Dan Bilzerian; the records

    Dan Bilzerian; the records

    We first wrote about fake celebrity, Dan Bilzerian in December 2013 when he was pushing the idea that he was “almost a SEAL”. According to Bilzerian, he was booted from BUD/S for reasons that seem to change. He claims that he struck an officer, that he cursed an officer, that he committed a safety violation, that the instructors were out to get him. Take your pick on which excuse you want to believe.

    Bilzerian was in the news again in the last few weeks because he happened to be at the Las Vegas massacre and he was able to post to Instagram while the shooting was going on. He was criticized by Medal of Honor recipient, Dakota Meyer for scurrying away from the scene without helping any of the injured folks. From Washington Post;

    He turned a camera on himself as he walked, short of breath, from the killing grounds, and at first resolved to live up to years of online bravado.

    “Trying to go grab a gun,” he says in the clip. “I’m f—— headed back. … Saw a girl get shot in the face right next to me, her f—— brains hanging out.”

    But in the next clip, which briefly appeared on Bilzerian’s Instagram account and has since been plastered over the Internet, he stands in front of police lights, looking slightly dazed.

    “Um, they got one of the guys,” he says, no gun in sight, all fury gone from his voice. “I’m headed back. I don’t think there’s much I can do.”

    So he went home, leaving fans to wonder whether one of Instagram’s most formidable stars was something different in real life.

    Here’s video from the UK’s Sun of Bilzerian begging cops for their gun during the shooting. They tell him to “Get the F*** away from me”.

    So, according to Dakota Meyer, Bilzerian is all hot air. His “almost a SEAL” bravado dissipates under actual gun fire. Meyer rushed through Taliban fire several times to rescue a number of people from an ambush in Afghanistan earning a Medal of Honor.

    Well, now it seems that Bilzerian has been handing out the phone number of Meyer’s wife, Bristol Palin, according to Celebrity Insider and Meyer has challenged Bilzerian to settle their differences like men;

    Yesterday, the decorated marine took to social media to make his unexpected challenge known.

    Meyer posted a video that he captured: ‘Here @danbilzerian I am done with your petty games. Do not ever drag my family into anything. I’m waiting.’

    In the video he shared, Meyer threatened Bilzerian, saying he has finally gotten his attention if that is what he wanted.

    He went on to claim that he would’ve easily let it slide if Bilzerian only messed with him but his family is a whole different story.

    ‘You want to bring my family in this, you want to put my wife in danger by putting her phone number out to people? You got your little friends trying to FaceTime her? My life is not a game and it is not entertainment either so what I’ll tell you is, my family’s purpose is my purpose, and now you are my mission. This ain’t an option. You just need to tell me when and where and if not we will be somewhere together, I’m sure. Why don’t we handle this like men? You got it, Dan? I’m waiting.’

    Well, someone asked us if we had Bilzerian’s military records, so we searched our archives and turned up a FOIA on him;

    It looks like he was honorably discharged as a Quartermaster, an E-4. He went on to the Reserves and he wouldn’t have if he’d had an other than honorable discharge from the Navy. He left the Navy the month after the war in Iraq began. If it had been me, I would have stuck around for a few years, you know, since we were at war, but that’s me.

    He likes to play dress up and talk about what a badass he is, but the truth is that Dan Bilzerian left the military when they needed him most. Or maybe he did the Navy a favor by leaving. Either way, Las Vegas wasn’t the first time he ran from a fight.

  • Time Traveler arrested

    Time Traveler arrested

    I can’t believe we’ve become so cynical that we’ll ignore the warnings of time travelers who made the journey back to warn us of an alien invasion. From Fox8, Casper, Wyoming;

    K2Radio.com reported that Bryant Johnson was arrested after police were called to a home in Casper on Monday.

    The suspect claimed he was from the year 2048 and that he traveled back in time to warn people of an alien invasion.

    Johnson said he traveled back in time after aliens filled his body with alcohol and had him stand on a giant pad. He said he wanted to speak to the president of the town.

    Officers said they smelled alcohol on the suspect and he had watery, bloodshot eyes and slightly slurred speech.

    Johnson had a blood alcohol content of .136….

    Well, yeah, if the aliens poured him full of alcohol in preparation for his trip, he would blow hot. Jeez.

  • Royal Navy sub commander investigated

    Tom Huxton sends us a link to BBC which reports that the commander of the British Navy’s submarine, HMS Vigilant, is under investigation for conducting an inappropriate affair with a female sailor in his crew. The article states that women were allowed to serve on subs beginning in 2011.

    Since then, a few dozen women have undergone specialist training to serve on board Royal Navy submarines.

    All Royal Navy vessels have a “no touching rule” that prohibits intimate relationships on board, but the Navy takes a particularly harsh view when it might affect the chain of command.

    In 2014, the first female captain of a Navy warship – HMS Portland – was removed from command after she was found to have breached strict rules on relations with a member of her crew.

    I guess the English language inspires lechery among military officers.

  • Tom Petty passes

    Tom Petty passed early this morning at the relatively young age of 66. Typically, the media reported his death before he was really gone. Petty is best known for his portrayal of Elroy “Lucky” Kleinschmidt on King of the Hill/jk.

    Oddly enough, I just found his channel (31) on XM Radio on Sunday, so I’d been jamming all weekend to his catalogue of music. And now this.

  • More troops to Puerto Rico

    The Pentagon has been sending troops by the thousands to Puerto Rico to help with the island’s recovery from Hurricane Maria. Hundreds of Marines from the USS KEARSARGE, an amphibious assault ship, have been busy clearing the ten airfields suitable for the heavy air traffic bringing relief from the US. From Stars & Stripes;

    The military aims to fly about 10 planes per hour into the region Wednesday to provide relief. Only three to six aircraft had been able land each hour previously, Davis said.

    Nearly all of Puerto Rico remained without power Wednesday and nearly half of its inhabitants did not have access to drinking water, according to the Pentagon. The military had helped restore some level of power to 59 of the island’s 69 hospitals by Wednesday, but most of them remained unable to provide advanced care.

    Sixteen helicopters have arrived, eight from Fort Campbell, Kentucky and eight more from Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

    At the request of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the military shipped about 350 satellite telephones to aid people in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, many of whom have been unable to communicate with family members and friends for nearly a week, Davis said. Cell phone service remains down for about 95 percent of Puerto Rico.

    The island is also largely without power and more than half of Puerto Ricans are without potable water.

  • Spenser Rapone; the commie LT

    Spenser Rapone; the commie LT

    A number of readers have sent us links to Gateway Pundit and LawNewz in regards to this fellow Spenser Rapone, who, as a USMA cadet posed with items supporting communism and expressed support for kneeling football players.

    Someone looked him up on the DoD’s Global database this morning and found that he is an infantry 2nd Lieutenant, assigned to the 10th Mountain Division and that he’s currently attending Ranger School.

    I’m not convinced that everything that’s being said about him is true or that it’s not a hoax perpetrated by him. I can’t imagine a cadet committing career suicide like that, though, except as a prank that got out of hand.

    I’m sure that if he does express those political views, though, he’ll get hammered in his peer reviews at Ranger School.
