  • Flat Stanley’s Odyssey

    Parachutecutie sends us a link to USAToday and the story of Brian Owens, Alan Orduna and Flat Stanley. Not our usual fare, but a god way to kick off your week;

    10 years ago, in the painstaking scrawl of an 8-year-old, Alan Orduna [wrote a letter].

    The Huntsville, Ark., boy, along with other students in Wood’s class, penned a note to accompany a paper cut-out modeled after the title character in the popular children’s book “Flat Stanley.” After being smashed by a bulletin board in his sleep, the book’s protagonist makes the most of his new 2-D state by mailing himself to friends.

    Wood asked her students to send their Stanley cut-outs to relatives or friends, who would then take them on a journey and detail the characters’ exploits in a letter back.

    Alan didn’t have a friend in mind — or at least not one who would take Stanley on an adventure worthy of a third-grader’s imagination. So, Wood sent Alan’s packet off to an Army unit stationed in Baghdad and asked Alan to wait.

    Click over to the link above and read the rest, it’s a long story but worth your while. Trust me.

  • A Brief Sunday Diversion

    Some ideas are universal, and are just best said in music.  And IMO, this is one I think we all can appreciate.

    I know I certainly can.  Been there, done that – literally.

    Yeah, Cyndi Lauper and others – Pinmonkey and Celine Dion, to name two – have covered the tune, and have had hits with it.  But it was written for Roy Orbison.

    Orbison recorded it in 1987. Unfortunately, Orbison died of a heart attack the following year; his version wasn’t released until 3+ years after his death.

    The other artists’ versions are good.  But IMO, Orbison’s version is truly special – and is probably the least known of the batch.

    And none of them had Orbison’s incredible voice.

    RIP, “Big O”.  We hardly knew ye when you passed early at 52.

  • An Army of Asian-American Secret Service Men

    Yesterday an account of Michelle Obama’s junket to China described her security detail as “An army of Asian-American Secret Service Men.”

    Excuuuuse me, but isn’t this exactly the kind of ethnic profiling that Libs get their panties in a wad over? Of course, sensible folks recognize the practicality of having agents who can blend in with the locals, but there is also the deterrent effect of having some huge White and Black agents whose height affords a security advantage over those same locals.

    Whatever, the selection process still smacks of race-related standards which is a big no-no supposedly with liberals like the Mooch. And sense when has practicality ever mattered when it comes to racial profiling and the left? It is the very lack of such practicality that has airport security treating grannies and infants with the same suspicion as young Muslim males and it is the same nonsensical deference to political correctness that denies law enforcement organizations to employ ethnicity in screening suspects for crime and terrorism even though minorities commit most crimes and Muslims carry out most acts of terrorism. Noooo, in those situations it is wrong, even evil, to permit ethnicity to be considered. But then, it is apparently perfectly alright to use it in selecting the security detail for the family of the world’s leading liberal.

    Is this to become a new trend in security staffing for overseas jaunts by our resident royalty: all black agents for trips to Africa, all Hispanics for trips south? Well then, what about all blue-eyed, blond-haired agents for royal excursions to Nordic nations.

    Yeah right, I’m being ridiculous there…

  • Matthew Ott fund

    I’m terrible at raising money and asking for money, so I’ll make this short and sweet. Some folks in the Nate Fornwalt discussion wanted to take up money for Nate’s victim, Matthew Ott, the thirteen-year-old who gave the phony a couple of thousand bucks. While it’s not our responsibility to replace the money, I guess it would make Matthew think better of veterans. Anyway, a couple of folks have already donated some and I’m going to toss in the money that you’ve sent in the last week or so.

    I just got off the phone with Matthew and John and they already know who they want to send to money to, so when I get your money, I’ll be writing the check to the beneficiary, not Matthew or John. They’re thinking that the beneficiary of the money will be a deserving vet in their area (who they’ve already vetted) and the local Gold Star mothers.

    I’ll probably leave this donation thing up until after the first of the month. All you have to do to donate is click on the Paypal button and send it that way. If you’d prefer to send the check by snail mail, my mailing address is at the “Contact Us” link. No this isn’t tax deductible – just pry open your wallets and send a few bucks.

  • Playing for Keeps

    TSO wrote a short article the other day that got me to thinking.  And when that happens, regular readers know I sometimes tend to wander off the beaten path a bit.

    Yeah, you’re right – your luck ran out.  I’m about to go on another walkabout.  (smile)

    But this time, it’s not about music.

    (more…)

  • Watch Out for Those “Killer Cows”

    Remember Jimmy the Clueless’s “Attack Rabbit”?  Well, Jimmy had nothin’ on this guy’s troubles!

    Several news stories out there about this one, but no real details.  I’d guess somewhere in South Asia, possibly India.

  • Nick Searcy keeps me entertained

    I don’t usually write about folks in Hollywood because, after all they’re only people with their own opinions like the rest of us. None are more valid than any others. But Nick has me roaring with laughter at his latest campaign. Nick is a conservative and he doesn’t like liberals or Democrats very much. He’s also a star of “Justified”, one of my favorite television shows, mostly because bad guys get whacked a lot. I liked the show before I started following Mr. Searcy. He’s been raging against liberals the last few weeks like no one’s business. But this weekend, it took on a whole new dimension. He came to the defense of Adam Baldwin when he was attacked by some writer named Tim Peacock in a Twitter war with this;

    Nick Searcy Twitter 1
    To which someone else injected themselves into the conversation and Nick responded;

    Nick Searcy Twitter 2
    And it continued like that;

    Nick Searcy twitter 3
    Of course, Leftists tried to get Nick fired from Justified by sending their Tweets to that account. So Nick doubled down with this hi-larious video as a faux-apology;

    And now he’s tripling down with this Facebook post;

    Nick Searcy hates bald people
    And this;

    Nick Searcy Twitter 4
    Nick Searcy Twitter 5

    The quote of the day from Nick is; “I know people have feelings. That’s why I try to hurt them.”

    So, that’s why I haven’t been paying attention to you guys too much. I’ve been laughing my ass off.

  • It was two SEALs on the Maersk Alabama

    I know there were stories flying around yesterday about the SEALs found dead on the Maersk Alabama, that only one was a SEAL, so I checked with Don Shipley and he verified that they were both former SEALs. From the Associated Press;

    Drugs were in the room where two former Navy SEALs were found dead aboard the Maersk Alabama, a ship that was the focus of a 2009 hijacking dramatized in the movie “Captain Phillips,” a company spokesman said Thursday

    […]

    On Thursday, police spokesman Jean Toussaint, noted that officials were awaiting autopsies and said, “As far as I know there is no evidence of physical trauma” on either man’s body. Speers said the Maersk Alabama was cleared to leave Seychelles following the onboard investigation and that it is already underway.

    I’m not passing judgement or speculating on their deaths, just trying to get to the truth here. They both left us too soon. The drug angle is too far fetched, though, unless they were somehow murdered.
