    Alexandria Gleason Morrow passes

    Bobo sends the sad news that another member of the military has passed in a non-combat death, Alexandria Gleason Morrow was a 25-year-old mother of two children and a service member of the Air Force variety and she was serving in Jordan;

    Her mother says she went off to the military two days after graduating high school. Gleason Morrow told her mother that if she couldn’t fly a plane, she’d do everything she could to protect the pilots.

    Lt. Kip Sumner of Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho said, “She died from injuries sustained from performing maintenance duties down-range, during non-combat operations.” Sumner could not provide more details and said Gleason Morrow’s death remains under investigation.

    From TWC News;

    The Navy featured Morrow in a 2011 You Tube video where she explained her role as a weapons loader while serving in Afghanistan.

    “I like that my job makes a difference. I like knowing that I did my part. I made sure that bomb got loaded the right way and that when it’s released from that jet, it’s going to do its job and end up saving lives,” she said.

    Morrow leaves behind her husband and two children.

    She was currently assigned to the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing out of Southwest Asia.

  • Terror in London

    A fellow whose name is being kept from the media attacked in London yesterday, killing three people and injuring scores, including Kurt Cochran, an American from Utah, as reported by The Guardian. Cochran’s widow is still in the hospital being treated for her injuries. The terrorist was killed by police – a good guy with a gun – after the criminal mowed down several people with his car and then went on a stabbing spree with knife.

    Sorry, no gun was needed.

    CNN reports that police have arrested eight others in connection with terrorism plots.

    Prime Minister Theresa May revealed the perpetrator was British born and once linked to violent extremism, in a statement to Parliament a day after it was locked down when the assailant breached its perimeter.

    May said the attacker — whose rampage claimed three lives and injured 40 — had been investigated by security services but was regarded as a “peripheral figure.” Authorities did not know he was about to mount an assault, she said.

    ISIS has taken credit for the actions of this fellow, according to the UK’s Mirror.

    The Amaq News Agency, seen as the terror group’s official press service, report the attacker was “a soldier of Islamic State”.

    The terror group does not provide the name of the attacker who killed three people before he was shot dead by police.

    The Amaq statement said: “The perpetrator of the attacks yesterday in front of the British parliament in London is an Islamic State soldier and he carried out the operation in response to calls to target citizens of the coalition.”

    Mick sends a link to BBC which reports on the heroic actions of Member of Parliament Tobias Ellwood while he worked to save the life of the police officer stabbed by the terrorist;

    Mr Ellwood, a Conservative MP and former Army officer, performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on PC Palmer in New Palace Yard, Westminster.

    Four people, including the police officer and the attacker, died.

    So many lessons here – it’s what happens when we don’t have the will to fight terrorists “over there”, and the government can’t protect us from the known terrorists, so let us arm ourselves.

    UPDATE: The UK’s Sun names the killer;

    THE British-born attacker behind the deadly attack on Westminster has been named by police as Khalid Masood,

    Masood, 52, who was shot dead by Defence Secretary Michael Fallon’s security guard, had once been investigated by MI5 over violent extremism.

  • Sergeant First Class Robert R. Boniface passes

    The Department of Defense has announced the non-combat-related death of Sergeant First Class Robert R. Boniface, in Logar Province, Afghanistan on March 19th.

    The 34-year-old native of San Luis Obispo, California was assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, Eglin Air Force Base, Florida and supporting Operation Freedom’s Sentinel (the name change from OEF since January 1, 2015).

  • 3 US soldiers shot in Afghanistan

    According to Fox News, 3 US soldiers were shot by a supposed ally in Helmand province in Afghanistan in the latest green-on-blue attack. The gunman has gone to his Great Reward thanks to other soldiers on the scene.

    The attack occurred around 1:30 p.m. local time at Camp Antonik in Washer District in Helmand.

    “Coalition security forces on the base killed the soldier to end the attack,” Capt. Bill Salvin, spokesman for U.S. Forces in Afghanistan, told Fox News. “The U.S. soldiers are receiving medical treatment at this time and we will release more information when available.”

    The severity of the soldiers wounds was not immediately clear. Salvin declined to offer more details.

    I guess some things never change.

  • CAIR demands investigation of US attack

    CAIR demands investigation of US attack

    Somehow I got on CAIR’s mailing list. Yesterday, they sent out an email demanding that the US answer for an attack that they claim was launched against a mosque in Syria near Raqqa.

    “We call for a full and transparent investigation of allegations that our military killed dozens of Syrian civilians while they were at prayer. The results of this investigation must be made public to either refute the allegations or, if the reports are correct, to take the actions necessary to hold those responsible accountable and to prevent such incidents in the future. The war against ISIS and terrorism can never be advanced over the bodies of Syrian civilians.”

    The article that they sent me to support their contention comes from something called Bellingcat. The problem is that it leans heavily on eye witness reports on the ground.

    Mohamed al-Shaghel, a local activist, told the New York Times that the the people in the building had “no affiliation with any military faction or any political side.” Other locals told monitoring group Airwars that the building is part of a mosque and a religious school. Mr. Abdul Kareem of OGN mentioned that the “according to locals, this is not a [Jabhat] Fateh al-Sham or Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham facility. This is a Tablighi Jamaat facility, where they gather every Thursday to go and give dawah to the people.”

    Some have suggested that a recruiting meeting, taking place in the meeting rooms of the mosque, for organizations like JFS or HTS was targeted.

    It is thus possible that the US was aiming to kill one or more high value targets, or a group of militants, linked to the various Syrian groups that are designated by the US as a terrorist organisation. Over the past years, the US has unilaterally been striking individual members of Jabhat Fateh al-Sham (formerly known as Jabhat al-Nusra) and HTS. These strikes are thus separate from the CJTF-OIR campaign.

    Perhaps the US was really not aware that the targeted building was a mosque built in recent years, which would explain their noticeable surprise in their initial claims from the ground that a mosque was bombed. After all, their imagery documented to them that the sole mosque they were aware of was still standing and undamaged, which explains why they said they targeted a location 50 feet away from the mosque – they referred to the old mosque.

    Yeah, they were probably the same eye witnesses that complained George HW Bush had bombed a powdered milk factory in Bagdad during Desert Storm.

    Or this lady;

    Eye witnesses are notoriously unreliable – especially eye witnesses in that part of the world.

    From the LA Times;

    After the Pentagon released the photo, some Syrians said on social media that the building destroyed was a newly opened mosque and that the standing structure was an older place of worship.

    The military is investigating whether civilians were inadvertently killed or injured, Davis added, but he said the photo showed the mosque was “relatively unscathed.”

    “As of the moment, we’re not aware of any credible allegations of civilian casualties,” he said.

    The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based monitoring group with a network of activists in Syria, reported Thursday that an airstrike hit the mosque in Al Jinah village and at least 42 people were killed. The group did not specify who launched the air attack.

    I wonder if CAIR will get just as exercised over the fact that ISIS murderers are hiding among the innocent population. I haven’t heard a peep from CAIR about the systematic murder of thousands of Syrian and Iraqi citizens.

    Their website claims that they oppose ISIS, they take pride in the fact that ISIS has condemned their organization, but you know, I hear that a tenet of their religion allows them to lie to kafirs and infidels, so that works against any statement they might make.

  • Another terrorist attack in Paris’ Orly Airport (Update)

    Another terrorist attack in Paris’ Orly Airport (Update)

    According to ABC News a known terrorist tried to grab a rifle from a female soldier who was on duty there. The jihadist was shot and killed by the other two soldiers who were with her;

    “This morning at 8:30 at Orly Airport, an individual tried to attack French soldiers in order to take the weapon of one of the soldiers — he was not able to do it and was shot and killed by soldiers,” Minister of the Interior Bruno Le Roux said early Saturday.

    France’s Minister of Defense, Jean-Yves Le Drian, said, the suspect attacked three soldiers patrolling the airport. He tried to take the weapon of one of the soliders [sic], a woman.

    “She was able to hold to her weapon. Two other soldiers shot at [the] individual to protect her. I congratulate them,” Le Drian said.

    Iniially, French officials claimed that they didn’t know the guy, but an update to the first story says that the fellow who was killed has been on French government’s radar since the 2015 attacks in Paris;

    The Paris prosecutors’ office says the 39-year-old suspected attacker who was shot and killed at Orly Airport had already crossed authorities’ radar for suspected Islamic extremism.

    Prosecutors say Saturday that the suspect’s house was among scores searched in November 2015 in the immediate aftermath of suicide bomb-and-gun attacks that killed 130 people in Paris. Those searches targeted people with suspected radical leanings.

    So apparently, the government knowing who the bad guys are doesn’t keep us regular folks safe. We have to do that part of the war against terrorists ourselves.

    UPDATE: “A French official connected to the investigation confirms media reports identifying the Orly Airport attacker as Ziyed Ben Belgacem, a 39-year-old born in France.”

  • Pirates take oil tanker in 5th Fleet’s AO

    According to Fox News, about 20 pirates boarded the Aris 13 which was transporting oil from Djibouti to Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu. It happened in the US Navy 5th Fleet’s area of operations;

    An official said no ransom demand had been made.

    “The vessel’s captain reported to the company they were approached by two skiffs and that one of them they could see armed personnel on board,” the official said. “The ship changed course quite soon after that report and is now anchored.” The official spoke on condition of anonymity as no one was authorized to speak publicly about the incident.

    It was not immediately clear who owned the ship or there it was flagged. Steed said it was UAE-owned and Sri Lankan-flagged, but the Middle East-based official said it was Greek-owned and Comoros-flagged with plans to re-flag it to Sri Lanka.

    The Fox article speculates on whether this is a test for the Trump Administration. If the US Navy gets involved, it won’t end well for the pirates – I don’t think there will be much discussion about that.

  • Syrian Kurds poised to take Raqqa

    According to the Associated Press, Syrian Kurds are confident that they’ll be able to take the ISIS capital city of Raqqa, Syria with massive US assistance;

    Gen. Joseph Votel, the top U.S. commander in the Middle East, signaled Thursday that there will be a larger and longer American military presence in Syria to accelerate the fight against IS and quell friction within the complicated mix of warring factions there.

    The SDF spokeswoman said their numbers are increasing with more residents of newly-liberated areas from IS joining the ethnically-mixed force, which has been the most effective group on the ground in Syria in the battle against IS.

    “We have enough forces to liberate Raqqa with the help of the coalition,” Sheikh Ehmed said, adding that their troops received intelligence that the Islamic State group is moving some of its leaders outside the city and are digging tunnels in preparation for intense street battles — much like those underway in neighboring Iraq where the Iraqi forces, backed by the U.S.-led coalition, are fighting to rout IS from the western part of the city of Mosul, the extremists’ last remaining urban stronghold in Iraq.

    Of course, Turkey doesn’t like the idea of Kurdish troops leading the assault since they consider the Syrian Kurdish militia known as the People’s Protection Units, or YPG, to be a terrorist organization.

    Turkey’s military said Turkish troops and Turkey-backed Syrian opposition forces have killed — or “neutralized” — 71 Syrian Kurdish fighters in northern Syria this week. The operations are part of Turkey’s months-long incursion into its war-torn neighbor in a push against IS but also in an effort to restrict the U.S.-backed SDF.
