  • Ted Rall rains on Obama’s parade

    Of course, in keeping with child-like scawling cartoonist cum child-like wailing commentator Ted Rall’s modus operandi, it’s a golden shower as he rains on Obama, the troops, the throngs of youths in the streets of DC and New York and America in general;

    Yet another screw-up for the U.S., which fell into Bin Laden’s trap after 9/11. To Al Qaeda and other Islamist groups, the United States and the West is enemy #2. Their biggest foe is pro-American Muslim dictators and autocrats, and the apathy and indifference among Muslims that allows them to remain in power.

    As with most actions carried out by small terrorist groups against enemies with superior manpower and weaponry, the operations attributed to Bin Laden—the bombings of the U.S. embassies in east Africa in 1998 and the U.S.S. Cole in 2000, and 9/11—were intended to provoke the U.S. into overreacting, thus exposing it as the monster he said it was. The invasions of two Muslim countries, Guantánamo, torture, Abu Ghraib, the secret prisons and disappearances and all the rest neatly fit into Osama Bin Laden’s narrative, proving his point more succinctly than a zillion fatwas faxed into Al Jazeera.

    Everything about Bin Laden’s killing squares with the jihadi narrative.

    The operation violated the sovereignty of a Muslim country, a constant complaint of radical jihadis. Armed commandos lawlessly invaded Pakistan. Infidel soldiers shot up a house and crashed a helicopter down the street from a military academy. Pakistanis see American drone planes buzzing around overhead, invading their airspace without the thinnest veneer of legality; American missiles blow up houses indiscriminately. Taking out Bin Laden without asking Pakistan’s government for permission is an act of war to which the country’s poverty permits no response. It’s yet another humiliation, another triumph of might over right.

    It’s sad that Rall has forgotten about the tragedy of 9-11, but in his rush to demonstrate his moral superiority, he forgets some of the most tragic events of the past twenty years to make his blunt point;

    Islam teaches combatants to respect their enemies. The death of an opponent is tragic, sometimes a tragic necessity, but never trivial, never a subject for joking. A vanquished enemy should be dispatched quickly, presumably to be chastised by Allah for his wickedness in the afterlife, but he is never to be mocked. A Muslim should not enjoy war or combat, nor gloat when victorious. When the powerful crush the weak, as was the case with the U.S. killing of Bin Laden, dancing around like a beefy hunk of steroids spiking the football at the touchdown line makes one look small.

    Apparently, Islamic teachings include dragging American corpses through the streets (like in Somalia and Fallujah) and beheading helpless non-combatants – a practice bin Laden encouraged among his subordinates, apparently. Rall also forgets the public, televised prancing on the “Arab Street” when the twin towers collapsed. I don’t remember him condemning those events.

    Rall is and always has been a total moron who thinks he can get away with any irreverent behavior as long as he cloaks it in “critical thinking”. But, in order to critically think, he needs an organ with which he can think – obviously the brain he has is broken beyond repair.

  • Abandoning Afghanistan

    In the Huffington Post today, Amanda Terkel announces “Mission Accomplished: Is It Finally Time To Leave Afghanistan?” and makes the case that the war is over there and it’s time to leave. She quotes some lawmakers like Barney Franks and Jerry “The Waddler” Nadler;

    “The single biggest reason we went into Afghanistan was to get Osama bin Laden,” said Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) at a Center for American Progress event Monday morning.

    “If Osama bin Laden was still alive, that would have given some people an argument, ‘Oh you can’t get out of Afghanistan for reputational reasons.’ … Having killed Osama bin Laden deprives people who wanted to stay in Afghanistan for other reasons of the argument that we would be leaving in defeat,” he added.

    Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) told The Huffington Post in an interview on Monday that once the euphoria of the U.S. success in Pakistan wears off, the country needs to start reconsidering its Afghanistan policy.

    “We accomplished what we had to do in Afghanistan a long time ago,” Nadler said. “We ought to stop wasting our troops and our money and our lives and get out. And this just shows that should al Qaeda establish a base there, we can go in and take it out as we just did in Pakistan. It just shows how superfluous everything we’re doing in Afghanistan is. Pakistan is more dangerous, and look what we did.”

    So, to listen to those two, we went to Afghanistan merely to act on our revenge instincts. I’d like to think America is better than that. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, we left that country unable to attack us since – our initial motives maybe have been revenge, but the strategy was to wage total war and leave them impotent.

    If we leave Afghanistan right now, history will record that we only wanted revenge for bin Laden’s attack on 9-11, when that wasn’t even our initial reaction. We left Afghanistan to it’s own devices in 1988 when the Soviets withdrew and it became a terror haven and a huge terrorist training camp. If we don’t build the military infrastructure to prevent that from happening again, what have the last ten years been about if not purely revenge for 9-11?

    The Taliban have launched their Spring offensive already – they certainly think they’re at war while our politicians obviously think the war is over. Think the Taliban will go easy on our troops because the politicians have lost the will to see this through to a successful conclusion?

    Harry Reid doesn’t even know where the troops are anymore;

    Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) was also asked on Monday what bin Laden’s killing meant for the U.S. occupation of Afghanistan. He initially slipped and said the President had committed to beginning withdrawal of troops “from Pakistan” but quickly corrected himself to indicate the correct country that the U.S. is occupying, despite the centrality of Pakistan to the effort.

    John Conyers declared the war over;

    With the death of Osama Bin Laden, the Long War that began on 9/11 is finally over. It’s time to bring our troops home, refocus our resources, reward the resiliency of the American people, and rededicate ourselves to rebuilding our nation.

    The Democrats have obviously lost the will to continue, though the troops haven’t. If we don’t finish the job in Afghan, we’ll be back again, but not before we pay another terrible cost.

  • Hasan’s lawyer to ask Ft Hood CG for life instead of death

    Yeah, this takes guts; Nidal Hasan’s lawyer (I’m assuming that they’re talking about John Galligan, but they don’t name him in the article) is preparing to ask the new commanding general of fort Hood to drop the death penalty in his client’s case;

    Hasan is charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder in the November 2009 shootings. If the death penalty is taken off the table, he will be sentenced to life in prison without parole if convicted, AP reported.

    I wonder if it’s too late to ask Hasan to not kill and wound his victims as a condition for not killing him as punishment. The only possible reason I would see the CG accepting the request is to avoid a show trial. I’m firmly opposed to the death penalty, but if there was ever a criminal who needed to be put to death, it’s this scum bag. In fact, I think a public beheading is in order.

    Galligan, by the way, defended Leo Church. Church was so upset with Galligan after Church was imprisoned for being AWOL, Church hired James Branum. How screwed up do you have to be to drive your clients to Branum?

  • Where Did All the Anti-War Protestors Go?

    John Stossel asks the same question that we here at TAH have been asking since 2008 “Where Did All the Anti-War Protestors Go?“;

    …the war in Afghanistan ramped up after Obama was elected. American fatalities shot up in 2009 and 2010.

    The protesters have remained silent over Libya.

    And I’m struck by the hypocrisy of the supposedly “anti-war” politicians who voted against Iraq, like Nancy Pelosi. Since Obama was elected, she has voted to continue the war in Afghanistan … and supported the attack on Libya.

    After the anemic Code Pink/IVAW/ANSWER protest in March of 2008, we asked where the protesters have been. It seems that they weren’t really anti-war at all, but more anti-Bush. The fact that the Geezers For Sitting On Our Hands (VFP) are still trying to impeach Bush (and Nixon apparently) more than two years after he left office is proof.

  • Ritter convicted

    We’ve been following the Scott Ritter, perv, case since the beginning.

    So after being caught no less than three times in the last decade, prosecutors finally got a conviction on child predator Scott Ritter, also a former UN weapons inspector. Ritter’s charges that he was being targeted by the Bush Administration for retribution didn’t work this time;

    Jurors in Monroe County convicted Scott Ritter, 49, on six of seven counts. He was acquitted on a criminal attempt charge. Ritter had no reaction as the verdict was announced Thursday. His twin 18-year-old daughters sobbed.

    Ritter’s lawyer claimed that the Pennsylvania jury was probably “troubled and offended” by the video of Ritter beating his soldier. Who wouldn’t be?

    Sentencing will be next month. Each of the five felony counts carries a maximum sentence of 7 years in prison, but Ritter is likely to get much less under sentencing guidelines.

    35 years seems about right.

  • Scott Ritter, perv; It’s your fantasy not mine

    In case you didn’t know, former UN weapons inspector and agent for Saddam Hussein’s propaganda to the West, Scott Ritter, convicted perv, is on trial in Pennsylvania this week for a 2009 arrest when he tried to solicit sex from a 15-year-old girl trapped in a middle-aged detective’s body. The Pocono Record describes the second day of the trial;

    The ticking of a clock on the wall was the only sound to be heard in a Monroe County courtroom Tuesday as jurors watched a silent, 30-minute video of former United Nations weapons inspector Scott Ritter first wearing just a T-shirt, and then totally nude.

    Some of the seven female and five male jurors shifted uncomfortably in their seats, looked away or closed their eyes, as the webcam video image of Ritter masturbating appeared on screen.

    All of the jurors sighed in relief when it was finally over.

    Isn’t that kind of a perv’s dream come true? Twelve people forced to watch him polish his pickle?

    Then Ritter took the stand and told the jury he knew it was a middle-aged person pretending to be a 15-year-old girl. The Albany Times-Union recounts;

    Scott Ritter, 49, of Delmar took the witness stand in his own defense and testified that he believed the person he met in a Yahoo chat room in February 2009 was an adult who was acting out her own sexual fantasy of being a minor involved with an older man.

    “It’s your fantasy of being 15. Not my fantasy,” he testified.

    If that’s his defense lawyer’s strategy, Ritter should get a refund.

    “At no time did I believe I was dealing with a 15-year-old,” [Ritter] said. “One adult is fantasizing about being an age they’re not.”

    Monroe County Assistant District Attorney Michael Rakaczewski was incredulous.

    “Are you serious?” he asked, bringing a swift objection from Ritter’s attorney.

    See, that’s why I can’t be a juror. There’s no way I could not burst out laughing.

  • Er, um, mumble…

    Bob Dylan to rock Vietnam in special concert.

    The iconic American folk singer and songwriter was set to play a special concert in the former Saigon on Sunday evening, where he’s expected to belt out some of his classic anti-war tunes, nearly 36 years after the Vietnam War ended.

    Dylan’s music during that tumultuous era helped define a generation, touching thousands of young people who took to the streets demanding that Washington stop the war in Vietnam.

    Maybe he’ll have Jane Fonda as a go-go dancer too?

    Added:  Rather than attempt to reply in the comments, I choose to amplify here.

    Whatever Dylan’s personal beliefs might have been a fact is that some of his music became anti-war anthems. However, much a like a gun and it’s wielder, there can be a disconnect of note.  He DID have the option of standing up and decrying their use had he chose to do so.

    Come you masters of war
    You that build the big guns
    You that build the death planes
    You that build all the bombs
    You that hide behind walls
    You that hide behind desks
    I just want you to know
    I can see through your masks.

    You that never done nothin’
    But build to destroy
    You play with my world
    Like it’s your little toy
    You put a gun in my hand
    And you hide from my eyes
    And you turn and run farther
    When the fast bullets fly.

  • The face of false outrage

    Delegate Eleanor Holmes-Norton compares the government shut down to “bombing innocent civilians”;

    Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton Upset Over Treatment of DC During Shutdown Resolution Talks: MyFoxDC.com

    Does anyone remember her outrage when Congress didn’t pass a budget last year? And, honestly, she was about as coherent as your average DC wino. She said something about Guantanamo (the closing of which the Democrat didn’t fund last year either) and something about the district’s murder of unborn children and DC’s residents funding the same.

    DC should be embarrassed that this illiterate bonehead represents them in Congress. But, I guess she’s the result of some obscure jobs program. But, I’m pretty sure that if DC residents quit electing knuckleheads like Norton or Holmes or whatever, they’ll be a step closer to statehood rights.

    I remember when they thought they’d get representation in the Senate back in 1993, they elected Jesse Jackson, who wasn’t even a resident of DC. With an absolutely ignorant electorate, who wants to give them voting representation in Congress?
