  • Rethink Afghanistan: Think of the Children.

Rethink Afghanistan posting with a duel idealism again. It comes down to the same ideas of veterans from the Vietnam War. That we are ether a victim or a killer of innocents. Something that seems to be surviving the years.

With Bin Laden dead and al Qaeda driven from Afghanistan, there’s no justification for keeping a massive military campaign going in that country. But the U.S. continues to do so, and more civilians have paid the price. According to Reuters,

“Foreign troops killed an Afghan child and wounded four others when responding to insurgent fire in volatile eastern Kunar province, the provincial Governor said on Monday, the third accidental killing of young civilians in less than a week.”

These deaths, like the war itself, are senseless. Help us get the word out that it’s time to end the war and stop putting civilians at risk. Sign our petition at http://rethinkafghanistan.com/ and get the troops home.

Senseless, given the recent suicide attacks and that fact that the Taliban threat is still real. Oh the Taliban is actively recruiting kids for suicide bombers as a alternative to harsh sharia law for crime such as losing a hand for stealing.

The Taliban gave Noor Mohammad a simple choice – either they would cut off his hand for stealing or he could redeem himself and bring glory on his family by becoming a suicide bomber.

Held in Taliban custody in a different village from his parents, after allegedly stealing mobile phones during a wedding party in his village, the 14-year-old boy went for the second option.

He was soon being given basic lessons in how to use a handgun, which he would use to shoot the guards at a nearby US military base in Ghazni, a province in south-east Afghanistan which is considered the most violent in the country.

He was also fitted with a suicide vest that covered his torso with explosives. He was told that when inside the base he should touch two trailing wires together, killing himself and as many US and Afghan soldiers as possible.

The article goes into some of the kids being told that only American would die when the bombs go off. Consider that this is not the first time that information like this has been found, how do you handle in treating children like non-combative s when the enemy only sees them as walking bombs.

But thinking that the Taliban and similar groups do actions like this and trying to deal with this threat is viewed as senseless. Oh it’s your fault be it directly or indirectly that child soldiers/suicide bombers are killing people.

But considering the above the message is not getting through.

if I roast my neighbor’s six year old son with a welding unit, people would be shocked, outraged and angry and call for my execution-but if I organize a drone bombing raid, or drop an incendiary bomb from 30,00 feet and kill the same child, then I’m a loyal and dutiful soldier-from the time I was small( 1940’s), I could never square this circle and after a lifetime of thinking about it, I still can’t. that’s why after four years of guarding Minuteman ICBMs, I became a pacifist for life..

The profit motive is more important than people. That is the state of humanity, folks. When will we evolve out of this barbaric state? It won’t happen by itself. What will catalyze the paradigm shift? The USA going completely bankrupt? We’re already there, actually. The war profiteers don’t give a shit. We’re all just cannon fodder.

  • The real thinking behind Rethink Afghanistan.

With the report from USA Today that the group Rethink Afghanistan was quick to jump on this. But I think that it should be noted that reasoning behind the group Rethink Afghanistan has nothing to do with Afghanistan.

It should be interesting to know that is from a conversation that started almost two years ago with Derrick Crowe.

U.S. Military Learning to Get Soldiers to Kill on Reflex, Drop Moral Reasoning

Sounds like something recently published. But here is the the money shot.

I reject one of your premises here: that firing a weapon could ever be a “right choice,” for any reason.

But then it goes deep into religion and ideals. But this is a case of ideals conflicting with reality. Which in this case the field of play being Afghanistan.

If you want to dispute the idea that Christians should be willing to die rather than kill an insurgent, I feel you have to do one of the following:

    1) Challenge my interpretation of the Good Friday narrative and of the Gospel stories in general and what they tell us about Jesus. If you’re not going to do that, I think you’ll have to

2a) Challenge whether Jesus intended his followers to base their ethics on his teachings and example, or

2b) Assert that Jesus was wrong, and that Christians in Iraq and Afghanistan should not be following his teachings or example. (Maybe this is your intent?)

But it really comes down to the fact that this conflict of ideals will not allow for a military option to be viewed as successful , regardless of if it is or not. That is the purpose of Rethink Afghanistan.

  • Don’t be naive, hippies

Sporkmaster sent us this video from The Ed Show in which, Jeremy Schahill from the Nation makes the case for withdrawing from Afghanistan because “you will never be able to destroy terrorism around the world”.

Yeah, it won’t be defeated as long as the hippies broadcast to the world that we don’t have the will to defeat terrorism.

    At the Huffington Post, Derrick Crowe of Brave New Foundation (another cover group for “Rethink Afghanistan”) calls for our withdrawal from Afghanistan because of bin Laden’s death;

This is the first week after Bin Laden’s death, and during this week we’ll spend more than $2 billion on Afghanistan War. Every week we continue to do so is a week when bin Laden is laughing at us from the grave.

He’s dead. We should go home now.

How naive and simplistic can one person be? Is Crowe saying that our only reason for spending billions in Afghanistan was to kill one man? Out of the expression of one emotional response – that emotional response being revenge? During the Bush Administration, the left was fond of telling us that that the death of bin Laden wouldn’t change anything in the war against terror, now they’re telling us that it changes everything.

    So which is it?

  • Rethink Afghanistan: the rationale for war has evaporated

As in my previous posts the group Rethink Afghanistan published this as a response to the reports of Osama’s death.

On May 1st, 2011, we learned that a CIA operation in Pakistan killed Osama bin Laden.

After 10 years of war and the death of Osama bin Laden, it’s time to bring the troops home from Afghanistan. With al-Qaeda driven from the country and Bin Laden now dead, the rationale for war has evaporated. It’s time to stop now.

The swift withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan must begin immediately.

Ok lets get this straight the raid happened in Pakistan, something that Rethink Afghanistan has been very vocal about being against it.

In fact that Rethink Afghanistan was putting out videos that decry that a turning point was about to be reached. So if we had listened to you back then we would not have this moment. So that being said why should we listen to you now?

  • Osama Bin Laden Killed?

Considering how many hoaxes and virus have been sent out under this subject I have very healthy doubts about this story.

Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden has been killed by U.S. assets in a mansion outside Islamabad, U.S. officials said. President Barack Obama will announce the death of the terrorist leader tonight.

Obama will deliver the news to the nation in an address from the White House, almost 10 years after the Sept. 11 attacks that bin Laden orchestrated. Bin Laden was killed, along with other members of his family, an official said.

    ADDED:
This is what has been going around the internet as the body of Osama. (Graphic Image Warning)

ADDED x2 Seems that Rethink Afghanistan is quick to use this for political reasons.

On May 1st, 2011, we learned that a CIA operation in Pakistan killed Osama bin Laden.

  • Sticks and Stones

Considering what is happening in Afghanistan I thought this is cartoon would put things into perspective. Also given that there are some interesting things coming out from the Rethink Afghanistan community.

    Ok were to start.

Well, okay, but…these were UN workers at a time when 100K+ troops were in the country. Doesn’t seem like the presence helped them much.

    Or this one.

That Florida pastor should be banished to Afghanstan for starting such a malificent ruckus, that people are killed as a result. If you read Islam’s history? You will realized it greatest spread came in the first 100years, by military conquest. Why poke a stick at a sleeping tigre?

But it is really just propaganda and never happened.

Those dudes SO look like they are posing in that picture. Look at that dude to the far left and the one behind him. Angry mob my ass. lol Looks like a well done fashion shoot for urban couture to me. Me thinks this is just some more propaga…nda to depict just how “wild and crazy” those Afghanis supposedly are, thus vindicating the presence of the “moral, virtuous, and humane” foreign occupation forces to preserve all that is just and good. Let’s forget about the indiscriminate killings that have been going down on their side. I’m just saying.

Not to forget the standard it is all our fault statements.

Carly the 1.5 million drone planes that US citizens have to pay with their tax dollars are bombing a villages and killing civilians. Death toll has risen to 31% this year. over 2 thousand just last year have died. Why isnt this hitting american media? How many babies are being born with deformities from chemical bombs being dropped. Maybe there protesting for other reasons as well. LOOK AT THE US and what there already doing. US government are the HITLER of today

But the rioters are not to blame.

Yep you heard that right, we are using chemical weapons in Afghanistan.

Did you forget the US killed millions of Iraqis in a war based on false evidence. Did you forget they submited torture. Did you forget that they started a civil war within the country thats killing over 32 thousand people. Stop blaming The opressed look at the dictators, how do you explain what they did?

Oh and if anyone can translate this one please let me know.

u have to understand even if u think all rlgs are fairy tales that Muslims honor the Quran more than any other Ppl value their holy scriptures, so I u dis it u dis the Ppl n that’s y they wana take some action n not just do lip s…ervice … A good analogy for the westerners is if someone cussed out the mist beloved thing to u n wanted to burn it ( cud be ur mom ., ur daughter ., etc)how wud u respond????

  • Don’t worry, I am a musician.

You know, I have to ask what makes people think that they can be subject experts something completely unrelated. Like take the following below.

Let’s attend the Austin rally for the Int’l Day of Action/Million Musician March

This is the event we discussed at the last Meetup. It’s the annual event led by Austin musicians spotlighting the terrible financial and human costs of the ongoing wars. Event at State Capitol 12pm to 3pm, parade through downtown from 3pm – 4pm
    Sponsored by Instruments for Peace

    Contact: Richard Bowden

Except that the numbers were much lower then their name suggested. Oh and the Under the Hood/IVAW regulars were there. They also seemed to be in smaller numbers compared to their protests in July at Fort Hood.

  • But Talk is just Talk.

This is another video from the group Our Journey to Smiles that is working out of Afghanistan to put a face on the people that live there. I Have very conflicting feelings about these people. On one had I can respect that they are over in where the danger is rather then from the safety of their own homes. On the other hand they have a naivety that is borderline criminal. I have written about this in the past. The newest video is no exception.

I have to wonder what would happen if the Afghanistan was not there to protect them with riot gear?

But of course you will get comments like this from this video.

It inspires me and I hope others that Afghan citizens urge peace. Enough killing in Afghanistan, in Iraq, in? Libya, in Palestine, in Israel, in Barein and elsewhere. The war-lovers? are leading us to madness.
