  • Matthis and Agosto: flag burning is cool

    Matthis Chiroux of the IVAW burns an American flag in Lafayette Park, DC
    Matthis Chiroux IVAW burns flag

    Two new blog posts at IVAW, one by Victor Agosto another by Matthis Chiroux, explain why they’re cool to like flag burning and you’re not. First, Victor rolls out a list of terrible things Americans have done – none of them anything done by people we know, but things that happened before we were all born;

    The flag represents the U.S. but it does not represent us. The flag represents the state, a tool the ruling class uses to further its interests. This state has killed its indigenous inhabitants and has enslaved its people.

    Yeah, that’s not from the International Socialist Organization, is it?

    It is a state which serves the interests of insurance companies rather than the interests of people who are ill. It bails out banks but not hard working people who face foreclosure. It facilitates corporate exploitation of workers all over the world. It engages in wars for control and profit.

    I am for the people who live within the territorial bounds of the “republic.” I am proud of their struggles for an eight-hour work day, gender equality, racial desegregation, ending child labor, and ending wars. However, we are not better than the rest of the world’s people. We are all one human family.

    That could’ve been taken from a speech by Eugene V. Debs, the socialist who ran against Woodrow Wilson in 1920 from prison. All of the same talking points. Now that Agosto is out of prison, he can go anywhere he wants. I urge him to go to a country that doesn’t embarrass him quite so much.

    But Matthis takes his fractured rhetoric to comedic heights;

    As the burning American flag clutched in my fist above me bathed my fingers in yellow flame, I felt no pain nor shame of conscience. I stared into the eyes of 5,000 people and returned to dust a genocidal fairytale. One force-fed to me since birth and later used to enslave my body. A bed-time story of epic deceptions. A lost dream groped for in the empty darkness.

    What a douche. Of course, he tried to write about the flag, but, as always with Matthis, he can’t help but make himself the center of the room.

    I long to take the needle off this skipping record and rest it on my broken heart.

    Me, too, you drama queen. I hope your broken heart doesn’t take as long to heal as your broken leg, you pansy. I wonder if Jesse MacBeth is writing his stuff these days.

    I didn’t put links in because you can’t get to IVAW from here – don’t ask me why, it makes no sense, but they blocked incoming traffic from TAH. But you can get there from Yahoo or Google.

    All of the ISO members of IVAW are changing their avatars on Facebook to the picture of Chiroux burning the flag according to people who can see their profiles. Camilo Mejas is one of them.

    Word on the street is that one of the board members of IVAW is planning to file a grievance with the rest of the board over this incident. Of course, knowing who that board member is, I don’t believe he has the testicular fortitude to follow through. He’ll probably be bought off by the rest of the board with the promise of a Skittles castle with a moat of Snickers bars.

  • The DC protest video highlights

    Here are some of the videos I’ve found and were sent to me about the protest this last weekend.

  • Matthis’ Big Weekend Adventure

    A little bird called to tell me that Matthis Chiroux was arrested this weekend for making mud stencils in front of the White House. Sure enough, I found a photo of the arrest at Al Jazeera.

    Notice the cane on the ground – he’s still playing the sympathy card for his broken leg from A FRICKEN YEAR AGO! I think that’s Elaine Brower, crackpot emeritus, next to him.

    Of course, this is the photo that’ll bring the most comment. Former Army Sergeant and recipient of a General Discharge Under Honorable Conditions and six day TDY veteran of Afghanistan Matthis Chiroux burning a US Flag to score some hippie chic strange.

    His leg doesn’t seem to be bothering him, does it? The IVAW folks were keeping this close to their vest passing it around on their Facebook accounts, but thanks to some refugees, we have it now.

  • An apology

    It’s not very often I make mistakes on our phony soldiers, but I did, and I admit to them. Earlier this month, I wrote about a guy who was pretending to be a Tea Party leader, Dale Robertson. When we got his records, it was clear that he wasn’t the Navy officer he claimed.

    Last night, we received more records from Records Center and it seems he was indeed a Navy officer;

  • ANSWER’s March 20th Rally

    I know Gathering of Eagles and some other groups are planning counter-actions to the annual ANSWER rally on March 20th in DC. How many of our readers are planning on being there? I’ll be driving down from my mountain retreat early in morning, so if anyone wants to meet up before hand, let me know.

    Yahoo says it’ll be 64 degrees and partly cloudy, so I guess the weather will be better than our first one in 2007, won’t it?

    From what I’ve read, the Code Pink hags will be there as well as Geoff “Stolen Valor” Millard and his DC IVAW crowd. ANd we can always count on the “Bert and Ernie” of the VFP crowd, Bill Perry and Ward Reilly as well as ANSWER’s new March Forward veterans group with our buddy Mike Prysner.

    A good time will be had by all.

  • Turley’s dream comes true

    Last month Jonathon Turley the GWU law professor said that if the Stolen Valor Act stands up to judicial scrutiny, it would criminalize bar pick up lines. Well, here’s a test case for him;

    A Sterling Heights man police said illegally wore a U.S. Marine uniform in a downtown nightclub and falsely told police he just returned from Iraq pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor Thursday.

    De Hieu Tran, 41, pleaded guilty at a pre-trial hearing in Ferndale 43rd District Court to charges of wearing a uniform when not in service and driving on a suspended license, according to court records.

    He faces up to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine on the uniform charge and is scheduled to be sentenced in Ferndale District Court at 1 p.m. April 8.

    Ferndale police said they spotted Tran at the Boogie Fever nightclub about 11:30 p.m. May 22, 2009 wearing a camouflage Marine uniform.

    “He stated he had just returned from his fourth tour of duty in Iraq a couple of hours earlier,” said Ferndale police Sgt. Patrick Jones. “He had captain’s bars on the collars of the uniform. The officer questioned him and determined he was impersonating an officer.”

    Yeah, that’s the fastest way to get arrested – wear a camouflage uniform to a place called Boogie Nights. That doesn’t stand out at all.

    Thanks to one of our lurkers, Chris, for the link.

  • 80-year-old phony soldier

    The folks at POW Net sent me this article from KATU’s local news about an 80-year-old busted in Portland Oregon named Lafayette Keaton who has been playing hero for decades. In the audio file above, you listen to him ramble on about his war experiences. The story he’s reciting about the Los Banos rescue happened when he was 15 years old.

    Yeah, he spent time in the Army, but he never served in any war – he showed up in Korea after the shooting stopped. He never went to Ranger School, according to Fort Benning, never went to jump school, according to Fort Benning. But fraud is nothing new for Keaton;

    In addition to his lies, Keaton has just been indicted on voter and Social Security fraud, accused of stealing the identity of his dead son and dead brother.

    But that’s not all.

    In 1960 he was convicted of endangering a child. In 1972 he was convicted of kidnapping a toddler he fathered, but he got that conviction expunged.

    In the 1980s, he was sent to prison for taking thousands of dollars from the state for creating a fictitious foster home. Up until that time he worked as a juvenile parole officer.
    It was then Keaton began rewriting his history.

    He’s nothing but a petty criminal – good on the locals for busting him.

    ADDED: The folks at POW Net send this link to their collection of Keaton’s chicanery with a proviso that that this only the tip of the iceburg, but that law enforcement agencies are holding much of his antics close to their vests.

  • Update on phony Marine in AZ

    For those of you who remember John W. Rodriguez, the Arizona phony Marine that TAH had a hand in helping Arizona Law Enforcement locate, the investigating detective sent this update today;

    On March 5, Rodriguez had a Settlement hearing on this case. The Superior Court Judge read Rodriguez the list of charges and penalties. The amount of time for all charges if convicted would come out to about 150+ years. In reality, that is not going to happen.

    The Plea offer is as follows, Rodriguez will plea to one class 2 felony with mandatory 4-12 years prison (the plea is 5), but the judge can change years anywhere from 4-12. Also plea guilty to a second class 2 felony with a 7 years probation and 200 hours community service (served at a military VA or military organization), surrender all military items to Law Enforcement, and write a written letter of apology to the Marine Corps.

    The Judge advised Rodriguez to be prepared to taken into custody by AZ DOC at the time he accepts the plea offer on March 29, at 11:00 am in Superior Central Court. If Rodriguez declines the plea then a trail date will be set, if he takes the plea he will be taken into custody and a sentencing date will be set.

    The written apology to the Marine Corps is a nice touch, but I think I’d prefer that he run a gauntlet of Marines swinging E-tools.
