  • Pretzel Logic

    f3h.jpg

    Impeachment seems to be slipping through their fingers, Nancy Pelosi has abandoned them on defunding the war in Iraq. Even their last hope, Barack Obama admits that maybe he won’t pull troops out of Iraq as soon as everyone hoped. So what’s the Left to do? Well, it seems they’re trying to rally State governments in order to stop augmenting our armed forces with National Guard troops. Several organizations link to a central page at Liberty Tree which touts itself as a “Foundation for the Democratic Revolution” and another named Peace Action. This whole movement seems to have started in the most logical of places – Vermont.

  • Anti-war vets grasping at straws

    Since no one is paying attention their outrageous blather about their mythical exploits in Iraq, Veterans for Peace and Iraq Veterans Against the War have decided that they’ll just complain about anything. An article last month in Sir! No Sir! (the same rocket scientists who think that Robin and I are one and the same are now ConLaw experts) decries a local Army commander’s publishing pictures of DWI arrestees on his post;

    One of the bedrock principles of our criminal justice system is the presumption of innocence. This means that when someone is accused of a crime he or she has the right to try to prove their innocence by challenging the prosecutor’s evidence and offering their own witnesses and/or evidence to rebut the charges before a jury of their peers.

    Commanding General Michael Oates has undermined this fundamental right by publishing the photographs and identities of Ft Drum soldiers who’ve been arrested for drunk driving in the four most recent issues of the base newspaper, “The Blizzard.” The paper has carried photos and news notes about each Drum soldier who’s been arrested for drinking while driving. Oates has told reporters that he is doing this to combat a growing tendency among soldiers to drink and drive. He apparently believes that by humiliating those accused of drunk driving others will be deterred from this behaviour [sic]. He also hasn’t stated whether the newspaper will publish retractions or apologies for those soldiers who are eventually acquitted of DWI charges or have their convictions overturned on appeal.

    Well, when you put it like that…but wait. Don’t thousands of local papers across the country do the same thing in their “police blotter” features? Like my hometown paper, the Wayne County Times, coincidently in a county near Fort Drum, which, in the paper edition publishes pictures of the suspects in all of their inebriated, disheveled glory. So this commander is doing nothing that other communities have done to combat this dangerous behavior. So what’s the beef?

    Members of the Iraq Veterans Against War (IVAW) at Ft Drum noted that many of the 48 soldiers who had their photos printed in the first Blizzard story, had returned from Iraq combat last November with the Second Brigade. “When you return to the base after a month or so of leave, that’s when PTSD often starts to kick in,” commented Sp/4 Eli Wright.

    […]

    Citizen Soldier attorneys have been researching the possiblity of a federal lawsuit to challenge Oates’ policy as an unconstitutional abridgment of due process rights. They are also discussing the problem with the New York State Civil Liberties Union, based in Syracuse.

    Ahh, now I see…it’s an affirmative action and employment drive for local attorneys. The Left is always demanding that soldiers be treated as civilians in matters like fraternization, but not when it’s used as a crime deterrent. This is just the VFP and IVAW trying to undermine the order and discipline of the military.

    The article says “many of the 48 soldiers” who were included in the first publication of the blotter report had just returned from Iraq. It’s been my experience that “many” in the IVAW actually means “few”. If there were indeed “many” we’d have seen a real number, but since there weren’t enough to be convincing of their argument, we don’t get to see an actual count. How about praise for the hundreds of others who returned from Iraq and didn’t drink and drive? Now that’s “many”.

    The VFP and IVAW claim that they’re only concerned with the mental health of the troops, that the rise in alcoholism is a symptom of their PTSD. Well, I’m no medical professional, so I have no opinion on that subject. What I do know, after living in the Fort Drum community during and after my military service is that alcoholism has always been a problem at the remote post located near Canada (where the drinking age is 18) and where were these activists when Fort Drum deployed 50% of it’s population every day for the Clinton years – when every soldier on that post was either deployed or preparing to deploy for the entire time I lived there (from 1992 until 1999)?

    Fort Drum is sorely in need of better medical facilities, but that need has been there since the post became an active post in 1985 – where have these “advocates” been for the last 23 years?

    All I’m asking for is consistency.

  • Help IVAW name their new coffeehouse

    OK, so IVAW is getting themselves a new coffeehouse in Washington, outside the gates of Ft Lewis.  I just watched this (surprisingly well done) video documenting their search and the thinking going into it.

    [youtube 7iOSDz6_iww nolink]

    Anyway, totally think the (tentative) name, “Ogive Plunger” sucks.   It’s a piece on the Mk19, which is the preferred weapon of an IVAW member when telling a story about shooting unarmed women carrying groceries.  It makes a distinctive noise when told to you through the sobs of the largely ridiculous audience, and the quiet chuckling of the 2 asshat bloggers in the back.

    Anyway, I thought of three right off the bat which I think work well, but thought maybe our readers could come up with more.

    • AR 670-1  (Kinda catchy, this references an army regulation regarding proper wearing of the uniform which is still unread by 87.3% of their members.)
    • Big Chicken Dinner.  (While not serving actual chicken, the BCD refers to Bad Conduct Discharges, which most the imbibers of Juan Valdez’s best will likely have.)
    • Shit on a Stick in the Rain.  (Only drawback: might not be family friendly.)

    Your thoughts?

  • How’d I miss this?

    It seems Code Pink sponsored a Karaoke fundraiser for their heartthrobs at Iraq Veterans Against the War this weekend and I guess I missed it. Where’s my social secretary?

    But, I’ve got the next best thing; a video tour of the IVAW clubhouse conducted by head sociopath and self-promoter Adam Kokesh, who seems to have a hard-on for Nancy Pelosi these days;

     [youtube uuhvkDLgNXk nolink]

     Still, based on illogical dogma, he seems a bit upset that Pelosi and Conyers won’t start impeachment proceedings based on their emotional outbursts.

    The beginning of the video shows DC Cops at a checkpoint near the clubhouse checking cars – that’s been going on for weeks in DC and at random areas because of the escalating crime…not because the metro cops give a damn about the IVAW and their antics. Adam, you guys aren’t worth a checkpoint. Get over yourselves and move your clubhouse to a trendier neighborhood – maybe your dad can sell a few more polo ponies so you can move to Georgetown instead of hiding out on Howard University.

  • Combat tours cut

    The President today announced that because of the success of our troops in the Middle East, the enemy is on the run and the troops can count on shorter tours (Wall Street Journal link);

    President George W. Bush declared progress in the Iraq war Thursday, saying terrorists “are on the run” and a generally improved security environment should permit further U.S. troop reductions.

    Standing on the Colonnade outside the Oval Office of the White House, President Bush also announced that effective Thursday, the duration of troop tours in Iraq will be cut from 15 months to 12 months.

    Mr. Bush said this reduction “will relieve the burden on our forces and it will make life easier for our wonderful military families.”

    With no help from Democrats, with no help from the cutthroat back-stabbing sociopaths of the IVAW and Veterans For  Peace, no help from the drama queens at Code Pink, no help from the filthy hippies of ANSWER. With no help from Barack Obama, no help from Chuck Hagel. With no help from Harry Reid, no help from Nancy Pelosi. With no help from phony soldier John Murtha, no help from phony earthling Dennis Kucinich. No help from Jim Webb no help from Ron Paul..

    The troops and the President, all by themselves, did what nearly every media outlet said they couldn’t. Against the odds, against the pseudo-experts.

    They can all claim credit and change their stories from now until the cows come home, but the troops know who stood with them. And who didn’t.

  • Anti-war crowd loses it’s cachet

    Raoul emailed me a link to IVAW’s Adam Kokesh’s blog (which I won’t link – you can Google it) where Adam reports on the impeachment hearing in Congress yesterday. As expected, it was nothing but a good bit of theater starring Dennis Kucinich, Bob Barr and Cindy Sheehan.

    To his credit, Conyers is completely ignoring the IVAW and Vets for Peace after their confrontation last week. I think Conyers realizes that his mouth wrote a check his ass can’t cash. The Democrats promised impeachment hearings in 2006 and now they’ve got nuthin’. They either lack the will or the legal footing to continue with impeachment, but they don’t have the guts to admit it to their base.

  • Conyers ignores Nader

    Ralph Nader is more than a little peeved that the Democrats, specifically John Conyers, haven’t included him the hearings on impeachment slated to begin earlier today so he did what nerds do best – fired off a strongly-worded letter;

    You have invited four members of the House to testify including, of course, Congressman Kucinich and several observers of the subject, including the inestimable former mayor of Salt Lake City Rocky Anderson, Bruce Fein and John Dean. The Libertarian candidate for President, Bob Barr is also on the witness list, but I am not.

    This is not the first time that I have been excluded from testifying on subjects both of us have been concerned about and have discussed.

    I see  poor Ralph underneath the basket in gym class jumping up and down waving his arms yelling “Throw it to me! Throw it to me!” And John Conyers, knowing Nader’s gonna drop the ball, just won’t.

    Never mind that they have no evidence, or any legitimate charges, or that they could better use their time trying to find some place to drill for oil or some place to build a refinery. Ralph just wants some face time.
    It’s all a little political theater for the nutroots and so Adam Kokesh, IVAW, the VFP and Code Pink won’t yell at them again.

  • Montalvan’s unit WAY better than mine

    In September 2003, I was put in charge of 80 soldiers who entered Iraq without any weapons or ammunition. We were mortared for three days in Balad, north of Baghdad, before arriving in Al Anbar province to link up with our unit. We were unable to return fire.

    Dude, I thought I had some pretty good troops. But not a one of them could shoot a mortar out of the sky as it came at us. Also, none of them could reach out and touch someone at 3,490 m especially when they aren’t line of sight.

    Raoul found this thing by IVAW’s Montalvan that is hilarious. Seriously, go ahead and read it, but turn down your BS detector before doing so or it might drive you nuts. Montalvan has always been one of my favoritest crazies.

    On another occasion, my higher headquarters ordered me (unlawfully) not to offer humanitarian assistance to refugees caught between the Syrian and Iraqi borders. Dozens would have died had we not disobeyed those orders.

    Even assuming the facts are accurate, what gives you the right to go outside Iraqi borders to do anything? Why is such an order unlawful? And why the F didn’t you resign your commission after being ordered into a country without a weapon and being ordered illegally to let people die?

    A friend of mine said it best: “if you saw all that, why wasn’t THAT your Winter Soldier testimony, instead of that boring shit you forced us to listen to?”

    Exit question: Do I even bother contacting a PAO to debunk the ridiculous “we had no weapons” story, or just a waste of my time?
