Category: Do You Miss Me Yet?

  • Sorry, I have been Deployed on important missions.

I have spent the last month on the move mostly.  A lot of it was Secret so I can only talk about it on this Interwebnet thingy.

The Soviet is now a Certified Open Water Diver.   I promised to do it all with her and I have to admit that it was not as easy as it was 30 years ago.  We then went and did 8 dives all around Florida while the rest of you got cold.  Sorry I have not been posting for a while and a giant THANK YOU to those who carried the load while I was suffering through long days and nights in 85 degree water.

    Best Regards to all.

  • Some mornings I just love this site.

I got up at Zero Dark Thirty to finalize this years battle plan for the War on Christmas and some prissy little gay white boy insisted on sending us an early present.

WARNING: THIS TWINKLE TOED LIBTARD USES LANGUAGE THAT MIGHT OFFEND YOU JESUS LOVING ALT RIGHT TUMPTARDS.   YOU MIGHT WANT TO PLAY THIS ALONE IN A DARK QUIET PLACE.

I also noticed that Hillary finally confessed to her crimes:

In an interview over the weekend, Hillary Clinton continued to deny any wrongdoing in the various controversies she was involved with during her time as Secretary of State and the 2016 Democratic candidate, claiming her only crime was “stealing the hearts of the American people.”

The interviewer asked Clinton if she was guilty of any of the myriad accusations against her when she admitted to being “100% guilty” of being America’s sweetheart.

“If being an extremely likable person beloved by every true American is a crime, then lock me up!” she said, laughing. “I’m guilty on all counts! Put me away for years! Throw me in the dungeon and toss the key in the garbage!”

She also confessed to lesser crimes of being “a woman of the people” and “extremely relatable.”

“I can’t help it if I’m just really good at connecting with the common man, who may only own two or three modest homes and wear suits worth less than $1,000,” she said. “I’m just that really down-to-earth kind of person, and you can’t blame me for that. It’s just who I am, fam!”

You people need to be more understanding and compassionate.  Apparently,  you just don’t understand anything.  Try to play nice.

What’s the matter? Someone piss in your Cheerios this morning?

Motorcade Would Disrupt Traffic by JILL COLVIN, Associated Press

PARIS (AP) — Stung by criticism for not attending an event honoring U.S. military dead, the White House says President Donald Trump didn’t want to disrupt Paris roadways for a last-minute motorcade to a cemetery in northern France.

    https://www.usnews.com/news/politics/articles/2018-11-11/trump-visit-to-us-cemetery-in-france-canceled-due-to-rain

Trump had been scheduled to lay a wreath and observe a moment of silence Saturday at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial, located adjacent to Belleau Wood and about 60 miles (100 kilometers) northeast of Paris. The White House cited weather conditions that grounded the president’s helicopter for the cancellation.

In the wake of criticism that Trump didn’t travel by car to the event, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders issued a statement Sunday that noted the weather and “near-zero visibility” as well as concerns that a motorcade on short notice would have required closing substantial portions of area roadways.

“President Trump did not want to cause that kind of unexpected disruption to the city and its people,” Sanders said. She also said the trip to Aisne-Marne was 2½ hours each way by car. – Article.

The determination to ground Marine One, the president’s helicopter, due to bad weather is made by the Marine Corps and the White House Military Office, which then presents the recommendation to the White House in collaboration with the Secret Service, according to a Secret Service official. – Article.

Fine with me. I don’t know that it makes a difference to anyone other than those who have nothing better to do than nitpick everything from the First Lady’s shoes to which way the wind blows.

Some people are simply not happy, period. Whiners gotta whine, and there are people who’d complain if you gave them a brand new rope to dangle from.

  • Thursdays Are For Cooking….

Oh, gee, it’s that time of year again. Getting cold at night, sweater weather during the day. Time to fix something for the weekend so you can go do other things and not have to pay attention to the stove.  All kinds of slow cooker recipes are online, and Betty Crocker has an entire section devoted to crockpottery and slow cookery, as well.

You know what’s really good? Scalloped potatoes with diced ham, oozing with cheese in the sauce. Yowzah!

Someone wanted my chocolate chip recipe so here it is. It’s based on the Tollhouse recipe, with a little extra of this and that.

    3/4 cup of cane sugar

3/4 cup of dark brown sugar (more molasses than lt. brown)

Stir that together to get a good mix, then add:

1 cup of melted butter (that’s two sticks, kids, and leave some in the box for the popcorn later on.)

3 teaspoons of extract of vanilla (Yes, 3. Tollhouse calls for 1. Pfft! Wienies!!)

Stir this together, and then add 2 fresh eggs. Stir the wet mixture thoroughly, and keep stirring it until it looks like satin.

Have your dry ingredients handy, mixed together for better distribution:

    2.5 cups of unbleached flour

    1 teaspoon of baking soda

    1 teaspoon of salt

Add the dry to the wet ingredients slowly, mix thoroughly, and halfway through add a 12 ounce bag of chocolate chips. Get the best and make sure they have the MOST cacao (at least 60%) you can find.  Don’t be shy about ingredients – ever! I let these cool on several layers of paper towels.

I don’t put nuts in these cookies. There are enough nuts running around loose as it is. Don’t need more of them. Put those in oatmeal cookies with lots and lots of raisins. The recipe is on the lid of the Quaker Oats oatmeal box.

These are drop cookies, so drop a heaping teaspoonful on your baking sheet. Bake at 375F for 8 to 10 minutes, then let them cool. The time length depends on your oven, but if the temperature is too high, they get dried out.

These can be kept fresh by storing them in a ziplock bag in the fridge and/or freezer until they’re eaten up. They won’t last long.  If they’re left out, they’ll get stale because they have no preservatives in them.  On the other hand, if you leave them out on a plate, they won’t last long because some Invisible Fiend will make off with all of them, and turn up again with chocolate and cookie crumbs smeared all over his/her/its face and hands.

I think the cost to make a batch is about $2.50+/- plus some elbow grease.

Time to get cider, too, and make a pumpkin pie… with whipped cream… and roast a turkey and some acorn squash.

  • Weekend Open Thread (Official)

    It’s finally here!

Okay, okay, I know: I’m late.

Isn’t that what your wife said before she told you the most important news?

Sorry I’m late with the WOT, but here you are. Have fun, play nice, and be home when the street lights go on, because you do NOT want me to come looking for you.

  • Weekend Open Thread (UPDATE on Jonn)

    Well, bye!!

And so, the last eight years are over and done with. The sun sets on the past. We have a new day ahead of us. Let’s move forward and make the most of it.

Here’s your Weekend Open Thread. Have some fun, play nice with the other kids and be home before the street lights are on.

    UPDATE:

Jonn is doing very well.  Sadly, he will not have nurses fawning all over him in the near future.  Someone who I will keep anonymous (TSO), made a painfully long ride to sit lovingly by his side.  It was all so sweet.  Feel free to press the little clicky button up in the corner and help get Jonn a membership to Dollar Shave Club.  All is well, he should be home soon.

  • President Bush beyond 9/11

Believe it or not, ABC News did this interview that they set us, with former President Bush and Marine veteran Jacob Wood as they discuss their plan for helping veterans reintegrate into the US (Editor’s Note: Yahoo is stingy with their videos, but you can see it at the link above).

Bush said he takes inspiration today from the resilience of hundreds of veterans he’s met over the years who’ve overcome post-war trauma and injuries to lead productive lives. He pointed to the example of Dan Gade, a veteran who resolved to conquer his handicap as a one-legged amputee so that he could once again play Legos with his young daughter. Gade has since been able to ride a mountain bike alongside the former president.

“I said to Gade, ‘I’m sorry you got your leg blown off,’” Bush recalled. “He said, ‘I’d do it again.’ There’s no self-pity, no ‘woe is me.’ It is, ‘I’m going to continue to live life to the fullest.’”

Bush was joined by Marine Corps veteran Jacob Wood, who is collaborating with the former president on his Military Service Initiative. After returning from service in the Iraq and Afghanistan, Wood co-founded Team Rubicon, an organization that employs veterans in disaster relief efforts. He said it was significant that Bush is showing leadership within the post-9/11 veteran community.

Rather than read my pointless blather, go read the rest of the interview.

  • George W. Bush to the 99%

    Former President George W. Bush made a rare public speech at his Presidential Center in Dallas today and it was largely about taking care of the troops – a subject the current resident of the White House largely ignores. From CNN;

“They are the 1% of America who kept the 99% safe,” Bush said of the 2.5 million military members who have served since 9/11. “While it never hurts to say thank you, that is not really the point.”

    […]

It’s “troubling” that 84% of veterans say the public isn’t aware of the challenges they face and that 71% of Americans agree, Bush said, citing a survey by the Bush Institute and Syracuse University to be released later this year.

    […]

Bush announced that his Military Service initiative has launched a multi-faceted, public-private partnership aimed at helping veterans assimilate back into civilian life.

The straight-talking former President said employers need to tailor their recruiting and hiring practices to accommodate post-war employees.

“I mean you don’t see many job postings that say “Wanted: experience hunting insurgents and terrorists willing to risk their lives for co-workers,” Bush said. “I mean, what’s a veteran supposed to put down? `My last office was a Humvee?’”

Bush also said Post Traumatic Stress Disorder needs to drop the ‘D’ out of PTSD. He referred to it as an injury that can be treated, and he referred to it as PTS.

“Employers would not hesitate to hire an employee getting treated for a medical condition like diabetes or high blood pressure and they should not hesitate to hire veterans getting treated for post-traumatic stress,” he said.

I have no idea why, but CNN quoted Paul Reickhoff in the middle of the article – Paul Reickhoff was rabidly anti-Bush and formed the anti-Bush organization, OpTruth, from which sprang the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. In fact, do a Google search on OpTruth and IAVA is top the top search result. So, the first thing out of Reickhoff’s mouth is that we have find a way to pay for it.

But the Bush Institute calls for a coalition of public and private institutions to de-stigmatize PTS, so the money thing is being handled, Paul. Bush isn’t sniping from the sidelines looking for government money, he’s bringing together government, universities, nonprofits and private companies.

“We’ll be … relentless in serving our vets,” Bush said. Somehow, he is more believable than that fellow who said he’s not going to balance the federal budget on the backs of veterans. Or that Hollywood “Got Your 6” bullshit. Or Paul Reickhoff.
