  • Moving Wall & Open thread

    Ex-PH2 sent us some photos from the “Moving Wall” that she visited today and says she’ll be back to see over the weekend and send us more pictures. If you want her to get photos of something specific, let her know in the comments. She can tell you the story of her meeting this Seabee;

    But, I’ve been on the road today – went to Bethesda to pick up my meds and to get a real haircut – so I’m pretty beat. So consider this an open thread where you can drop off recipes, discuss whatever you want. Other bloggers can drop off links to the important stuff they wrote today, but I’m going to snooze with one eye on the goings-on here.

    If you’re wondering why it seems so crowded in here, 16,000 people just discovered Phillip Mark Thompson today from somewhere out in Facebook land.

  • Ex-PH2 to the Moving Wall

    Ex-PH2 writes to tell us that she’s going to see the “Moving Wall“, well, here, I’ll let her tell you;

    I’m going to the Moving Wall, which will be a few miles north of me, to get some photos this week. I may go up tomorrow for the ceremony, and will definitely go on Friday, even if it’s raining.

    Some people have not had a chance to go to Washington to visit that monument. I haven’t been there yet myself.

    If anyone wants photos of a relative’s or buddy’s name on the Wall, I’ll get those for them.

    I will get the first name, middle and last name, branch of service and if possible, rank. I found in looking for someone that many people had the same first and last name, and some even had the same middle initial, so the more info I have, the easier it is to locate them.

    I you want to put the word out, I’d appreciate it. They don’t even have to send it to me directly, just post it on TAH. I’ll take care of the rest of it.

    Thanks!

  • Open thread

    Ex-PH2 asked that I start doing more open threads like I did a week or so ago. My two weeks vacation starts today, so, I’m amenable to the suggestion. I’ve got a new receiver for my AR coming today, so I have some other things I could be doing besides waiting for the next Denial of Service attack (which, by the way, is being reported to the FBI as we speak – another nail in Wickre’s legal coffin). It seems that with every DoS attack, it gets easier to find the perpetrator. But you guys go ahead do what you want with this thread – exchange recipes, post links, bloggers push your blog, whatever. You know how to get a hold of me.

  • TAH on “Vets on Media” at noon (Updated w/video)

    The folks at Vets on Media have asked me to be on their show “Vets on Radio” today a little after noon, so you can just go to the link and click “Listen Live” to hear us talk about John Giduck, Phil Monkress (and you know I’m going to sneak in Wickre) and TAH. I’m going to be followed by the guys at SOCNET in the 1 o’clock hour. All times are Eastern.

    The show (my part begins at about 26 minutes);

  • Sorry about the post count today

    Someone tried to kick us off of the internet today with threats to our internet provider, so we’re in the midst of moving to a new server. I already lost one post today and I’m not sure this one will show up here. When we move, you’ll need to clear your DNS cache to get into the site. In Windows, you type “cmd” at the “Start” menu and then “ipconfig /flushdns” at the cursor on the box that opens.

    So here’s hoping that this posts.

  • Admin notes

    I don’t like doing it, but I’ve moderated several people over the last two days. I’m trying to stay away from starting a registration process – mostly because a few years back when I did have an open registration, a troll broke in and took over the blog. I was on vacation at the time, but I restored everything and booted the clown out – but that’s why there’s no link to register.

    Anyway, if this was my coffee shop or my shoe store, I wouldn’t allow horseplay, so I’m taking these measures to restore a semblance of order here. I’m pretty sure that some of yesterday’s trolls weren’t who they pretended to be – they’ve been here before under different names.

    So, if you comment, and find yourself moderated (Harry, Eagle Keeper, Cyber Bully, ObamaGirl, specifically) I’ll let your comments through if you’re actually having a discussion and not namecalling and being a general jerk.

    Some of you, not listed, might find yourself moderated because my spam filter is working overtime – that would be accidental. If you find your comment not posted email me and I’ll dig it out of the filter.

    But, I’m just trying to keep the discussions on track and give the impression that we’re all grown ups here. Take your flame wars to email.

  • Spam filter problem

    Some of your comments are being sent to the moderation queue, not because of anything you did, but because my spam filter is being an asshole. I’m digging you out as quickly as I can, but I didn’t want anyone to think they’d done anything to offend me (which is almost impossible). Thank you for your patience while we work to correct the problem…or screw you, whichever works best for you.

    Added: I’ve temporarily closed comments in posts older than three days in order to cut down on the spam until my spam filters servers come back on line. You can still comment on newer posts, but I’ll turn comments back on in older posts when Askimet gets their shit together.

    Special note to our pool of writers; I’ve also shut off email notifications of comments so you don’t get an email every time a spam message goes to moderation. Again, I’ll turn it back on when those geeks at Askimet get it all back on line.

  • Recipes

    OK, a couple of times today, someone has asked me to start a recipe page. I know that’s waaaaayyyyy outside my lane. I can cook Ramen soup and reheat pizza slices. And, oh, I can make a mean bowl of instant oatmeal. But, if you guys put several dozen recipes in the comments I’ll start a TAH cookbook page like I did with your photos for the members’ gallery.

    I think one of the folks who asked for the page wants to steal them for a cookbook she’s writing about military folks’ favorite recipes.

    So just drop your favorites in the comments and I’ll pull them all together for the page in the heading. No time limit. Have fun.
