    How is this bad news?
Poll shows drop in beer’s popularity

Pollster Nate Silver points out a statistic that might spell doom for the country: “Popularity of beer at record low,” he writes.

    More for ME!

With that note… A refresher course in REAL relevance:

  • Just in case…

    H/T Carrie.

I missed this, maybe you did too?
Banks Offering Emergency Plans for Debt Ceiling Crisis

More banks are announcing plans to help in the event that the federal government debt ceiling crisis results in non-payment of pay for service members and other Department of Defense employees.

USAA (my bank) appears to be on top of things, and my VA check went in so we can eat and keep our house for another month.

  • Alas Poor Gore – The Internet he invented has betrayed him yet again.

Okay so this ain’t actually TAH fare, but I needed a chuckle while worrying about whether my VA check will show up.

New NASA Data Blow Gaping Hold In Global Warming Alarmism

NASA satellite data from the years 2000 through 2011 show the Earth’s atmosphere is allowing far more heat to be released into space than alarmist computer models have predicted, reports a new study in the peer-reviewed science journal Remote Sensing. The study indicates far less future global warming will occur than United Nations computer models have predicted, and supports prior studies indicating increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide trap far less heat than alarmists have claimed.

Toss in this bit and it’s quite a hand wringing day for some folks.

A federal wildlife biologist whose observation in 2004 of presumably drowned polar bears in the Arctic helped to galvanize the global warming movement has been placed on administrative leave and is being investigated for scientific misconduct, possibly over the veracity of that article.

The latter article DOES use the word “possibly”, but…

Maybe the EPA will introduce more new regulations against trusting heretic scientists who don’t support their religion?

  • Geezers Rule!

This story has been making the rounds here in REAL West Virginia.

At noon Saturday, 72 year old Menuard Frazier’s home was invaded by three men who beat him and tied him up while they robbed his residence.

According to WSAZ, the three men knocked and asked the retiree to use the phone. As he led them to the kitchen, they jumped him, tied his legs up and put a sheet over his head.

When the crew left, Frazier dragged himself to the kitchen, got a butcher knife and cut himself free.

After grabbing his 9-millimeter automatic pistol he spotted the thieves making their way back across his yard from robbing his son’s home, and they opened up with weapons they’d stolen from the younger Frazier’s house.

Frazier returned fire as the trio rushed to their pick-up for a get away.

Moving out of pistol range, Frazier dumped the 9-millimeter and grabbed a Remington 1100 auto-loading, tactical shotgun and emptied that into the back of the truck.

An angry Frazier told police: “I ran out on the porch with an 11-hundred automatic and emptied it as they drove across the creek down here,” he said. “I did my best to kill everyone of them.”

If this story don’t make you smile and/or applaud yer toooo young!

  • The Other Shoe?

A friend sent this link along.

One of Kerry’s enablers in propounding his imaginary heroism was a man named Wade Sanders, who himself held a Silver Star, and who introduced Kerry to the Democratic Convention. Scott Swett, who was central to the unraveling of the Kerry storyline, tells us that the Kerry enabler has been exposed for what he is. His Winter Soldier site has the details:

John Kerry was introduced at the 2004 Democratic National Convention by Wade Sanders, a retired Navy Captain and former Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy who served as a Swift Boat officer in Vietnam. Like Kerry, Sanders was the recipient of a Silver Star for gallantry in action. During the 2004 campaign, Sanders functioned as Kerry lead attack dog against the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, repeatedly denouncing the veterans on the air as liars and comparing them to Nazi propagandists.

Wade Sanders is now in Federal prison, serving a 37-month sentence for possessing child pornography. Now the Navy Times reports that Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus has revoked Sanders’ Silver Star. The highly unusual decision appears unrelated to Sanders’ felony conviction. A Navy spokesman cited “subsequently determined facts and evidence surrounding both the incident for which the award was made and the processing of the award itself.” John Kerry has to be hoping this doesn’t become a trend.

Not much to add. Child porn is disgusting unless yer a member of a certain peaceful religious group (look it up), but I highlighted the kicker for me.  Looks like a stolen valor case, but I don’t have the skill set or time to explore that aspect.

  • A New Paradigm? Or Just Nuance?

The silly terms in my title annoy me.

Some asshole in Norway committed a sort of “terrorist act” to promote his world view.

I simply can’t make much more of the events in, and around, Oslo than that.

What possible difference does it make as to WHY?  Well, there is something to be said for recognizing patterns IF one simply acknowledges them and uses them realistically. In our PC world recognizing a pattern appears to begin the process of making (and looking for) excuses.

The Lone Gunman… The Lone Gunman With an Agenda… The Lone Gunman With an Agenda From a Broken Home… Etc.

What I look at is the number of clearly terrorist acts, as defined thus :

violent or destructive acts (as bombing) committed by groups in order to intimidate a population or government into granting their demands.

Then I  examine the frequency and source.

One Lone Gunman simply isn’t a group! But there IS a group out there…

The whole ‘defining the problem’ exercise seems lost.

  • Beware!

This story is all over the web:  Homeland Security Depicts Terrorists as White Americans .

That sort of ‘viral’ thing doesn’t usually rise to TAH standards, but lets face it; the finger is pointing at US so it makes some sense as comment fodder anyway.

    The Daily Mail notes:

A video released by the Department of Homeland Security urging people to report anything suspicious has caused outrage by characterising white middle class Americans as the most likely terrorists.

The promotional video is part of Homeland Security’s $10million ‘See Something, Say Something’ programme as they believe it will help curb random acts of terrorism by individuals.

But the controversial video has angered some Americans due to the fact all the actors who play the would-be terrorists in the video are white, and the people who report them are either black, Asian or Arab.

What would happen – it is asked – if it was the other way about?

  • A Reminder…

Won’t make a habit of this, but TAH has a forum. Look up right for the link.

Thing is, I launched the forum just before a local event overwhelmed me.  Others stepped in and the forum is fine now.

Here’s the deal. Any new participant not a regular participant at TAH needs to drop ME an email to ponsdorf at gmail dot com after signing up at the forum. There is a procedure for the forum that’s more complicated, so you decide.

The closing question…  Does TAH even NEED a forum?  If so, how can we make it better??
