CNN in Place in Time for Roger Stone’s Arrest

Folks are claiming that CNN was on position in time to catch the FBI arresting Rodger Stone early in the morning. He has been charged with obstructing an investigation, making false statements, and trying to get people to lie to the investigation.

None of these related to President Trump or to “his” alleged Russian collusion. One thing many are talking about, though, is CNN being in position to catch this in progress:

Why have a news crew on station, given time of the day, and given the profile of the investigation, the investigators, and the accused? This was like the fiasco with the early 1990s with regards to the filming of Marines and SEALS landing in Somalia. In both cases, safety was compromised partly in order to feed the camera crews.

A bigger question making rounds is how CNN ended up being the major news network on the scene. Was there a tip off? CNN argues that it acted on a hunch. If someone tipped them, and it was an opportunity for a news organization to have a first report, an exclusive, they couldn’t be faulted on doing what any other news organization would do in their situation.

Even if CNN delayed reporting on the events, the fact that they were at the right place at the right time is causing folk to raise questions.

Greta Van Susteren provided an input based on her experiences as a criminal defense attorney:

CNN’s earlier account of the arrest:

A number of law enforcement vehicles with silent sirens flashing pulled in front of Stone’s home on a darkened Ft. Lauderdale street just after 6 a.m. Friday morning.

About a dozen officers with heavy weapons and tactical vests fanned out across Stone’s lawn.

Law enforcement shined a flashlight into Stone’s front door before one officer rapped against it, shouting, “FBI. Open the door.”
Seconds later, the agent shouted, “FBI. Warrant.”

A floor light turned on and moments later, Stone appeared in the front entryway. He confirmed who he was to law enforcement.

  7. If I were a news organization, I’d have had someone at Stone’s place today too. It was reported yesterday that Mueller’s Grand Jury was meeting that day. The last time that happened, indictments went out.

    Stone was the obvious target. If CNN somehow got the indictment before its release that’s interesting, but I’d like to see confirmation of that before passing judgement.

      It was a knock and announce which is not how a high risk warrant is executed.

      However, Roger Stone has been antagonistically uncooperative and has persisted in efforts to obstruct the investigation.

      Investigators had every reason to believe he would destroy evidence if notified to surrender. So this is the MOST POLITE way you would execute a warrant with a suspect not expected to be dangerous but expected to be uncooperative and destroy evidence.

      If Roger had not immediately come to the door they would have executed a forced entry to apprehend him and stop him from destroying evidence. Which is why they are in the gear they are in and appear ready to enter if necessary.

      Roger knew he was going to be arrested soon and likely destroyed any legacy evidence already but anything on his devices in the last 24-72 hours is likely still there and recoverable if they can secure the devices.

      1. A TAC team is not the “MOST POLITE” way to serve an arrest warrant. Even if you think he might be uncooperative or destroy evidence, which is a dubious claim at best here.

  12. There is nothing suspicious about it. If you guys were not in a bubble and ignoring the legal filings you would know that arresting Roger Stone was a certainty. It was also widely expected to be soon. It was also expected to be on a Friday. The question was which Friday.

    When Mueller’s team moved their weekly Friday meeting to Thursday and there was a flurry of Special Council team activity yesterday there was widespread expectation that someone was being indicted today. Roger Stone was by far the most likely person.

    A couple of CNN reporters staked out his home.

    This is journalism.

    There is also at least 12 more indictments coming based on filings so far. Though they are still sealed Trump Jr’s name is certain to be in one of them.

    The is a real investigation involving genuine criminal activities by a bunch of shitbags that put their own ambition and greed over the interests of their county.

    The “Witch Hunt” narrative is absolutely bullshit and anyone who believes it is a damn moron at this point.

    The warrant was executed exactly as you would expect with an uncooperative suspect like Stone who would absolutely destroy evidence and more politely than could have been justified in the warrant request.

    And he has proven himself to be a flight risk by hiding out in Canada the last time he heard he was likely to be indicted.

    They could justify a pretty aggressive warrant execution with an uncooperative flight risk that has access to overseas wealth and foreign business connections.

    I hope they do.

    1. That means that, because news people are general functionally illiterate, they don’t know that the klaxon that makes the siren noisy can be turned off, and only the lights will flash.

      It’s been like that for many decades. They just don’t realize that it is not something new.

      1. Back in the olden days, lights and no siren was referred to as a code 2 response by many entities. Don’t know what most responders call it now.

          1. Just after I retired in 2013, the wife and I we driving somewhere and had to yield to a firetruck running with lights and siren in the same jurisdiction where I used to work, I look at her and said, “that is a SEP”. She looked at me funny and asked what a SEP was, I replied “Someone Else’s Problem”.

          2. Always run with code lights when responding, use the siren as needed, depending on traffic, blind curves, etc. At least, that’s what they taught me. Traditional Code-2 response is generally just for “reduce code and continue” scenarios in these parts. Non-emergency PSAs get a no-code response.

    Warrant service on anyone can be deadly, both to the person named on the warrant and those executing the warrant. The FBI has a SWAT that is used for situations expected to be high risk, where resistance is likely. Otherwise, field agents, appropriately armed and attired execute warrants. The latter is what happened here. There is nothing more to it. As for CNN being on hand, as stupid as those people are–and they are, collectively–stupid as hell, I cannot believe that they anticipated anything and got lucky, outsmarting all other newsies. That leaves me with one conclusion, that they were tipped off. It may have been the local gendarme. It may have been someone in the court. It may have been the FBI. But it was someone.

      In many other environments (ones where the Orange Man is bad aren’t involved) often are simply a warrant issued and a call to come and surrender, followed by said surrender to the issuing department accompanied by your attorney so you can be home for dinner.

      Declassifying everything this cocksucker has been investigating would go a long way to either quieting the cries of impropriety or revealing them.

      1. Well, I can disagree with some of that. People do sometimes ask if there is an outstanding warrant naming them and are then invited to come on down to the local station house or precinct. If they do, they get cuffed or told, “No warrant.” Was it unnecessary for the FBI to arrive loaded for bear? Yes. Was it consistent with their usual SOP? Probably. There’s a reason why local police laugh at the suits.

    Ask yourself a simple question: If you were running a campaign for President, and somebody came to you claiming to have proof that Hillary Clinton, as an example, enjoyed feeding domestic pets to crocodiles, would you refuse to listen to the information?

    The parade of vehicles slow rolled past the CNN studios, lights blazing, with a couple of accidental blasts from a siren, until they had the full attention of everyone inside the building. No need to announce their intention because it was obvious something newsworthy was going down. The “Follow Me” vehicle was a nice touch.
