Since the weekend is coming up, I thought a slow cooker recipe might be a good idea, because there is nothing better than going out to shovel snow and coming back into a warm house, only to catch the scent of BBQ beans or a good chicken casserole wafting through the late afternoon hour. Also, I thought Aysel could use another slow cooker item in her repertoire.
This recipe comes from the kitchens of Betty Crocker, and I have used it many, many times. You’ll find that substituting your own favorite spicy flavors for the original recipe works quite well. The full recipe makes 4 to 6 servings
Here we go:
2 cans 15 oz+ each of great northern beans, drained and rinsed
2 can 15 oz each of black beans, drained and rinsed
1 large onion chopped (amt. equal to 1 cup)
1 cup BBQ sauce
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon ground mustard
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons of chili powder
1 ring (1 lb to 1.25 lb) fully cooked smoke sausage
Mix all the ingredients except for the sausage together in the crockpot, then place the sausage ring on top of the beans. The heat from the beans and BBQ sauce will steam the sausage nicely.
Cover and cook on low setting for 5 to 6 hours. Should provide at least 4 servings, and up to 6.
Here’s the best part: you don’t have to stick strictly to this recipe, ever. I don’t. Instead of the GN and black beans, I use beans canned in chili sauce, a mild chorizo sausage cooked ahead to add spiciness, whole grain spicy mustard instead of the dry mustard, and some chopped garlic along with the onions. I don’t use additional brown sugar or chili powder because the BBQ sauce (a commercial brand) has enough sugar in it. Whatever variation you like is okay.
Also, I put chopped onions on the beans when I put this stuff on a plate. Add some cornbread to it, plus some good dill pickles and radishes and other such comestibles, and a favorite beverage. A good cole slaw goes well with this, and apple pie with ice cream is always good for dessert.

WOW that looks good. I threw away like 3 different size crock pots a number of years ago because my cooking was very limited. It’s Bean a long time since I ate beans for lunch or dinner.
The picture at the top is what you would call an “Alabama Lunch Sandwich”!
I have already processed 3 deer (son, mine and daughter) this year into steaks and ground deer (95-5 mix deer to 70-30 ground beef from the store) we will start on the 4th on Sunday (Sil’s 10 point), my grandson shot his 1st deer this year, a small doe and they took it to the processor. They are having it made into steaks and sausage. It will have to be cooked and maybe smoked first, but I would like to try it in your recipe.
RGR,
Turn one of those roasts, or a pound + of steaks into cubes, throw into a crock pot, add a couple bullion cubes, and a 32 oz jar of pepproncini peppers (yep, whole, with juice, though the sliced ones work too).. simmer that for 5-6 hrs, and serve on good Italian rolls.. through some sliced provolone on if you like..
That does sound good.
“comestibles”
I learned a new word today.
This weeks dish looks yummy and quick to prepare but cooking time of 5-6 hours?

Ex, your food always makes me drool! Food would fight to be in your kitchen! Keep those things coming, I always enjoy your kitchen!!
Stay warm up there!!
Mrs.AW1 made split pea soup last night. A pressure cooker gives that “simmered all day” flavor in about half an hour.
Didn’t get custody of my pressure cooker, among other things. Saddest part is she never used it, didn’t like it, and only kept it to poke me one more time. Finally gonna replace it here right shortly.
Crock pots get used on a very regular basis, at least 3 times a week. Got one percolating now with cubed beef and all the proper seasonings. It will be going over beds of rice, with steamed broccoli and cheese sauce
Have tried all of Ex-PH2’s beans and sausage recipes and they have been exceptionally tasty. This one will be used for next Saturday’s 8 Dec smack down of Navy (beans) by Army. I’ll have to triple the amounts because of the folks that’ll be here. Will be four of us.
“I’ll have to triple the amounts because of the folks that’ll be here. Will be four of us.”
All that disappointment in one room. Sad, really; at least y’all will have Ex’s BBQ beans to cry in.
Go Navy!
Ed…you forgot to type in “BEANS” after “Go Navy”…
Go Navy Beans…With Ham Hocks..There..Fixed it for ya…*Bbawwaahahaha*

Sorry, Pat. I had the null steered your way. All I heard was “Go Navy…”
Glad you finally came around. I’ll finish with a hearty “Beat Army!”
*grin*
LOL Amen….next time GO NAVY! 😉
It may be too late, but Amazon had the 6 quart Instant Pot, v3, on sale for 49 bucks last weekend. Bought 3 for Christmas presents.
Looks/sounds really good. I’ll give this a shot and see how my wife and girls like it. Clarification: 4 cans of chili beans????
BTW: Your receipe’s are awesome!!
If you use chili beans, figure 1 standarrd 14 to 15 ounce can equals two servings.
3 to 6 servings, yeah right.
*BURRRPPP*
😀 😀
No one would ever deprive you of your fair share, ChipNASA.
