Tropical Storm Florence, Update

Update

Update 9/9/2018

Just in, Governors of Virginia and both Carolinas have just declared a state of emergency in their respective states.

Still a tropical storm, but freshening and expected to be a Cat 3 or better Hurricane when it comes ashore.

The Carolinas are the current predicted landfall, but these storms don’t always play by the script.

If you’re in the target area, time to start doing due diligence and prepare for a big storm next week.

  1. This has some characteristics of Katrina. One big difference is that this area is much more populous, with dozens of cities of 200K + population in its path. My hometown in NC is going to get whacked. DC is potentially going to get its swamp drained earlier than anticipated, though not in the manner Trump envisioned. This is gonna be one bad mofo.

      1. Might want to check the latest graphics from NOAA. Current projections say Florence may do exactly that – tropical storm intensity that location somewhere after 2PM on Friday.

For anyone in the projected area to be impacted: be careful out there, folks. And if you’re near the coast in the projected area – consider evacuating. Strongly.

  2. Good luck to all of you living within the cone of probability. Please update me if it looks to be heading toward Spokane WA. I don’t want to be caught napping.

  3. Batten down the hatches coastal dickweeds. Hope the life jackets for all the swamp rats spring a leak. Keep our favorite DC hamburger joint safe.

  4. I’m far outside the cone in CT, yet:
-Generator PMCS’ed and ran for 15 minutes, every month, 5 gallons back up.
-80 gallons of water, 3 gallons of bleach (rotated as used)
-60 1person/days of freeze dried rations.
    -120 1person/days of rice/beans
-2 gallons of vegetable oil (rotated as used)
-assorted canned goods: dintymore beefstew, corned beef hash, soups, veggies, etc.
    -hygiene and first aid
-flashlights, radios, candles, fire extinguishers (1 kitchen, 1 bedroom, 1 basement, 1 each in vehicles)
    -50 AA, 25 AAA, 12 123’s, etc.
This is my MINIMUM for ‘being prepared’.
The LAST thing you want to do when there’s panic is be in the scrum!

    1. Consider rechargeable batteries and a solar charger for non-immediate / longer-term needs.

I made the switch to rechargeables about ten years back. (Alkaline and NiMH) Most of my originals still work reasonably well.

      1. I’ve been meaning to check out the portable ruggedized charger, maybe for the radios, some of the lights. Most of the new flashlights and optics use digital circuitry which almost requires the use of lithium batteries.

    2. “dintymore beefstew”

A man could stay holed up for forever with that stuff and enough ammo.

      1. Canned chicken and dumplings are also a good choice. Ditto canned Brunswick stew (though it’s not a favorite of mine). Canned corned beef hash and chili also work.

Supplement those with canned or dried fruit/veggies and vitamin pills, and you’ll be fine (health-wise) for quite a while.

  5. I got my A & B cases of Mil. MRE’S last week for the actual start of the Hurricane season instead of June First. I missed the Hurricane conference up in Orlando back in March due to my SIBO acting up or thought that ‘s what it was as it turned out to be a couple of months of a stomach virus which was going around. Next conference is in New Orleans but I stay away from that town so I will make Orlando in 2020. I used to monitor Weather Underground before the WX Channel bought them out. Now instead of a Zillion maps and real weather geek stuff, the WX channel has commercials and is suited for the non weather geek person. Don’t know why the three boys sold out. My mercury ship and mercury Admiral Fitzroy barometers are holding steady so Hopefully I won’t have to dig into those MRE’S Not bad for a 2017 packaging and 2020 inspection date although with our thermostat set at 77 Deg. looks like 3 or four years. Last year we got hit down in West Delray Beach Fl. and no power for 4 days. No FPL inspection team came around and saw the downed tree laying on the primaries and when the power was energized, The transformers blew and it was as we say, So long Fat Ass. I should invest in a hot stick like the one we had on our rig when I was a Jolly Volly up north.

    1. Some foot suggestions for the novice prepper:

If you can boil water after losing power, I highly recommend the Mountain House freeze-dried chow. Tasty and calorie dense. It keeps a rather long time if stored properly. REI has several other brands with even more varied menus. Yum.

For an inexpensive substitute for MREs, look in the canned meat isle at the grocery store for the Dinty Moore no-fridge trays (and some other brands). Basically MRE entree in a bowl. Heat and eat. A hot dashboard of a car works, or put it in hot water. Or, eat as is. Some other brands are in pouches. Some -do- require strong heating, so check the label.

Do you like the “(whatever) Nut Cake” MRE items? Look for the Bear Valley Pemmican/Foodbar bars from REI. Tasty, but not overly sweet, and about 400 calories each.

Using those and other items, I assemble my own meal-packs in quart or gallon ziploc bags, for a fraction of MRE costs.

It is amazing how much of MRE prep food has moved onto grocery store shelves.

  6. We seem to be getting Gordon’s load from the Gulf of Mexico, although Gordon can’t seem to make up his mind which way he’s going to go, or how big he’s going to get.

And then Helena is still across the pond, followed closely by Isaac. Looks like more rain in the near future.

        1. AW1Ed, now that shit right there is just funny as hell, I don’t care who you are. And be with the starving pygmies.

        2. Now those pics are the cat’s meow and you know that they are not old because they are not wearing boots(Puss in boots)

        1. Sigh,Am I at a loss for the Persian to lose it’s dignity after being turned into a rug.

          1. Where do you think the Persians got the idea for carpets?

Persian cats effectively ARE carpets most of the time. They’re just lumpy living carpets capable of movement when provoked or startled. (smile)

  7. Does this mean we are all officially old? (When we aren’t talking about our aches and pains we are talking about the weather…)

    1. Well, weather and cooking – yes.

Also, when we start sentences with ‘back when I was in junior high school’ and we get odd looks because junior high went away.

  8. Accuweather keeps changing its forecast, almost by the hour at times.

They must be using SJWs as assistants. Can’t make up their minds which way the wind blows.

  9. Yep. Next Thu/Fri probably are NOT good days to plan a visit to the USS North Carolina.

Having had relatives in hurricane country most of my life, I’ve found NOAA’s National Hurricane Center site to be among the best at predicting where the damn things are going. I’d strongly recommend monitoring it closely this week if you live on the US east coast.

  10. …The 0500 update shows Ground Zero between Wilmington and Jacksonville. If this thing is a CAT III it’ll be bad – if it’s a CAT IV, it will be catastrophic. Most of the MB area isn’t built to take a hit like that, and the infrastructure is…well, shallow. They’ll be without utilities for weeks. North of there Wilmington will be underwater after the storm surge, and even the Showboat will be taking a hit.

    1. Guaranteed. He caused it, didn’t prepare people sufficiently well for it and absolutely will not respond to the tragedy properly. Besides all that, he will offend people for how he talks about it, isn’t sympathetic enough, and should have done more “X” and less “Y.” Wherever resources are staged, they should be somewhere else.

  11. Looking at that pic on top, I am forced to conclude that the east coat of the US is about to be attacked either by a giant amoeba or a very, very large uncircumcised penis.

    1. Just wait until the news media breaks out the box of blaze orange crayons.
People all the way to Detroit will be putting up plywood

  12. If you live in NC, SC, or VA and need to evacuate from hurricane Florence, Anchor Inn NSB will discount your stay 20% while rooms last. After going through it our selves the last two year we know how stressful it can be. Our prayers for your safety are with you all. anchorinnbnb.com Promo Code: Florence

  13. Hurricanes are disruptive but rarely fatal. In the US, lightning causes, on average, 55 deaths annually, tornadoes 80, and hurricanes 17. That’s nationally. The stats are from Texas Tech’s Wind Science and Engineering Research Center. In other words, your chances of being killed in a hurricane are just about nil. After the storm has passed is when people die, nearly all from an overdose of stupid. The primary killers are carbon monoxide and fire. Stupid must be honored and will not be denied.
