The Boston Globe reports that President Bush will appoint retired LTG James Peake to be the Secretary of Veteran’s Affairs.
General Peake’s career started as a West Point cadet followed by a tour in Vietnam as an Infantry officer. Peake, who was awarded a Silver Star, a Bronze Star with “V” device and the Purple Heart with oak leaf cluster, attended medical school at Cornell and is a board certified thoracic surgeon, was also the Surgeon General of the US Army from 2000 to 2004.
Naturally, the Boston Globe and the AP took shots at President Bush and the War on Terror in the first paragraph of their article:
President Bush will nominate retired Army general James Peake on Tuesday to direct the Department of Veterans Affairs, which is strained by the influx of wounded troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.
