A few days ago we talked about William Nguyen who was arrested in Vietnam for participating in a protest against the Vietnamese government. The Associated Press reports that the court convicted him and ordered him deported;
A court official said that Nguyen, who is of Vietnamese descent, admitted to the violation and showed remorse, which resulted in a lenient sentence. He had faced up to seven years in prison.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted later Friday that he was “tremendously pleased” Nguyen would be returning home to his family.
The State Department had previously said Pompeo had raised Nguyen’s case while meeting with Vietnamese officials during his visit to Hanoi earlier this month.
Demonstrations in communist Vietnam are uncommon and often broken up by plainclothes police.
So, Nguyen lucked out. His mother had fled the country in 1979, you’d have thought that he would know better.
My mother used to caution me, “If you go looking for trouble, you are going to find it.”
All of these dumb shits who go to places like NOKO, Iran and Nam to protest or do other dumb things deserve what they get.
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. I wonder if he learned a lesson, or will we hear in the future about him doing something as stupid or worse?

Interesting. There seems to be a larger story at work, if you read between the lines. William Nguyen was apparently caught up in protests about a new land-use policy that would potentially grant to foreign investors, such as the Chinese, 99-year leases on parcels of Vietnamese territory.
The Chinese are also sitting on large amounts of cash due to trade imbalances. In theory, China might be able to take eventual full control of Vietnam by simply renting it at the start. Too, it would also be no surprise if some of the deals cut tended to benefit political apparatchiks instead of the general population.
Mere deportation for William Nguyen, and relatively light sentences for other protestors, might mean the court agreed the land leases don’t pass a sniff check.
It also might mean that the Vietnamese government sees the US as a potential counterweight to China – and is trying to signal that fact by going easy on this young fool.
Small price to pay for some good will; Mr. Nguyen is one lucky SOB.
