I don’t often engage in name calling (that’s not true) but this fellow, Ryan Sawyers, really deserves it. He’s the Chairman of the Prince William County School Board – the County which includes Marine Corps Base Quantico. For some reason, he sent out a Tweet this week;
“Your are not required to stand for the national anthem or pledge. There will be no action taken against you for choosing to not stand or participate. Our President is a bonafide idiot but you are safe in PWCS.”
The implication, misspellings notwithstanding, of course, is that the President is going to force students to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance or the National Anthem and the only thing to protect them from Trump is Ryan Sawyers.
Sawyers is running as a Democrat in the upcoming Congressional primary election, by the way. He was also the subject of a failed recall vote last year.
But, Sawyer isn’t protecting his students from Trump – if Trump was even interested in the School District or the habits of the students there. The Supreme Court decided in West Virginia Board of Education v. Barnette, in 1943, that Americans can’t be forced to stand and recite the Pledge or salute the flag during the National Anthem. Sawyer is creating controversy where there is none – simply grandstanding for his own political gain.
And the word is “You” not “Your”, Chairman of Education Sawyer. And you are a bonafide idiot.

You’re confusing Virginia’s Prince William County with Maryland’s Prince George’s County- a DC bedroom and high crime community. At least in Virginia citizens have the right of legal armed self defense.
I will have you know that PG County has the best government that money can buy. And certain citizens who are favored by the Crown can indeed legally defend themselves outside their home.

Quantico is not much of a player in PW elections for the same reason that the large number of active duty in PW tend to not change their home of record (HOR) to VA because of high taxes. I and every active I knew stayed with our hor. Mine was Fla.
The federal government subsidizes the PWC school system for every student from a military family that claims another state as their home of record. My two kids are graduates of the PWC system and every year we had to fill out the forms so PWC could get their money.
Pandering to the lowest common denominator always works, especially when you insult the rest of the voting-age people.
