Happy Birthday Puddle Pirates!

Semper Paratus Coast Guard- 227 years young!

Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton lobbied Congress to fund the construction of ten cutters, which it did on 4 August 1790 (now celebrated as the Coast Guard’s official birthday). Until the re-establishment of the Navy in 1798, these “revenue cutters” were the only naval force of the early United States.

  1. It is also Whacking Day. On this date in 1882, Lizzie Borden was accused of giving her stepmother forty whacks. Then giving her father forty one. When she was taken into custody, she told authorities that she just needed to axe her parents something.

    1. Lizzie Borden took an axe
      Gave her Momma forty whacks
When she saw just what she’d done
She gave her Daddy forty one.

      1. Daniel Bernath took a plane,
        Not having fuel was insane
His flight cut short, he soon crashed
His hope for court payout soon were dashed.

        1. Hmmm, guess I’ll have to give this a try too:
          “Trashcan Bernath had a crash,
Because the dumb fuck ran out of gas
He tried to sue, but it all fell through,
So he’s blowing hobos to pay his dues.”

  2. Happy BD Coasties!

COOL Picture…I think my inordinate attachment to the geography of my home state may be kicking in here, but looks like Mt Rainier in the background! 🙂

  3. Happy birthday, Coasties! We squids dump shit about you guys being the “Green Water Navy” etc., but you are some ballsy (and crazy) motherfuckers for sailing in the seas you do. Enjoy the day!

  4. WAR STORY ALERT: Had the privilege of serving in the CB Auxiliary working alongside the great men and women of the Coast Guard. With rare exception, they were all professionals. Only met one douche bag Commander (an aviator assigned as Aux Overseer for a district so you know he screwed the pooch along the way) and a CW2 who acted like an ensign, a bad one at that. From the three star all the way to the coasties, it made this old man feel young again. BTW, the Puddle Pirates are in the heat of battle off of Iran.

  5. I tease some of my Coastie friends about being TSA with boats but my grandfather was CG aviator number 62 Dec 1938 and he was a WWII Vet and retired as a Capt.

I hold the Coast Guard in high esteem and often wonder why I never considered going that route.

    Happy Birthday.
