Mattis to Visit Asia as Pentagon Chief

Good Morning.  First news of the day, after the ‘Feel Good’ stories section and the comics have been read, is that retired GEN Mattis, now a/k/a Secretary of Defense Mattis, is going to pay a visit to Asia to review matters concerning US-Asian relations on that planet.

It will seem like another planet to the press until they get used to reporting about it.

I believe he will spend some time discussing options with South Korea, despite their current, and about to be ‘ex’, president’s corruption issues.  I’m going to guess that he might make a brief visit to Vietnam, partly because the Vietnamese government has made it known that they’d like US help dealing with the Chinese – again.

    1. After eight years of doing the bidding of what’s his name, I’m guessing Mabus has a knot on his head the size of a golfball. While the other services’ secretaries were smart enough to bring foam rubber to protect their noggins from the underside of that desk in the Oval Office, he wasn’t. I will say this for Mabus, though, the guy was always ready for a meeting. He had knee pads sewn into all of his trousers.

  1. Always wondered – is a regime which when bought, STAYS bought, such a liability if they are on our side? Or is that too pragmatic?

We tend to get on a moral high horse about so many things (many of which we are equally guilty)- I sometimes wonder if diplomatically speaking we sometimes throw out the baby with the bathwater.

    1. David, I tend to agree at the end of the day stability is better than constant regime change.

The problem becomes what price are you wiling to pay for stability?

We certainly lose the moral high ground with allies who rape little boys when we discipline our soldiers for beating the crap out of one those allies. And our good friends in the Kingdom killing women for adultery when they’ve been raped…I mean moral high ground indeed.

We appear willing to overlook these things in order to maintain the stable flow of resources from the middle east…that brings up an entirely different set of questions apart from diplomatic relations.

      1. Speaking about the stable flow of resources from the Middle East, that’s why I’m for drilling in the USA as well as the construction and expansion of refineries to the point where we can give the middle finger to the ME.

        1. That seems like a good idea, API, but their reserves are bigger than ours, and Russia’s reserves, including oil shale, are bigger than theirs.
If we use up our own resources instead of using theirs, we may come up short some day and then we’re dependent on THEM. Then who controls who?
