Opal Charles; skims from charity

MySanAntonio reports that 66-year-old Opal Charles skimmed thousands of dollars from charities that donated to the Warrior Transition Brigade at San Antonio Military Medical Center since 2004 for which she worked;

According to a complaint filed by Army investigators, she used the money to pay personal living expenses, accessing much of it from an ATM at the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino in Eagle Pass.

Gary Barber, director of the San Antonio chapter of the Air Warrior Courage Foundation, said he personally delivered checks to wounded soldiers for years, but began approving emailed requests for financial assistance a few years ago.

Investigators said at least some of those emails came from Charles’ work email account. Charles has worked for the Warrior Transition Brigade at San Antonio Military Medical Center since 2004, according to the complaint.

The Army probe found 127 foundation checks totaling more than $100,300 were deposited into Charles’ bank account from April through October of this year. The account had 25 withdrawals totaling more than $105,800 in the same period, the complaint said.

  1. Baber said Charles didn’t work for or volunteer at the foundation. Her association with the charity was “as a government employee requesting us to provide help for a wounded soldier,” he said.

    As part of a deal, Charles will be granted a request to be transferred to another government position (such as in the VA) and receive “additional training.”

    1. This is a perfect example of everything that is wrong in the Federal Government.

      No consequences of any significance, no accountability for wrong doing, just a transfer to another place in the bureaucracy where they will find another way to grow even fatter on the taxpayer’s dime.

    2. Where has it said she took a deal to transfer? I’m pretty sure she’s going to get removed from federal service for this.

  2. Many of these so called military/veteran charities are anything but. I am a member of the DAV and my local Chapter supports disabled veterans in the San Antonio area. We also provide toiletries for our patients in the VA Hospital. As a VA Volunteer, I make sure our vets are taken care of. You would be surprised how many families do not take care of Dad or Grandpa in the hospital.

    Beware who you donate money to.

  3. Go to Walmart. Walk by the customer service area. See all those toy returns? Guess where many of them came from? People suck, by and large. They really do.

  4. Rotten Piece of Shit. 4 horses, 4 lengths of rope, 4 appendages, 4 HARD slaps on each nag’s rump = Just Deserves.
