Operation Barkane

The folks at France24 send us a trailer for their report “Inside Operation Barkhane” which is scheduled for broadcast tomorrow Saturday night at about 7PM. It’s about some reporters who embedded themselves with French anti-terrorist operations in Northern Africa where there are 5,000 French troops engaged with terrorist elements in five countries.

  1. Thanks for the link! Excellent opportunity to strain my French language skills.

We tend to give a French a ration of @#$%, but they are not shy about putting boots on the ground and going after bad guys. They military is also much more willing to accept operational risk than we are, and gives small unit commanders much greater autonomy than we would ever be comfortable with.

Interesting factoid. The French have conducted more combat parachute operation in Africa this year, than we have conducted in the last 25 years total.

  2. Bet most all of the ops were carried out by Legion Etrangere units; the French are at their best when they deploy foreigners to fight for them on the ground…

  3. Operation Barkhane operates out of Chad.

Commanded by the highly-experienced Major General Jean-Pierre Palasset, who commanded the 27e Brigade d’Infanterie de Montagne (27th Mountain Infantry Battalion, 2003-2005) before leading Operation Licorne in Côte d’Ivoire (2010-2011) and serving as commander of the Brigade La Fayette, a joint unit comprising most of the French forces serving in Afghanistan (2011-2012). 1. well, their adventures in the Americas ended in 1803 and they ended up Indochina with a resounding defeat at Dien Bien Phu… they didn’t really have much anywhere BUT Africa where they were spread all over the north end of the continent
