Some GOOD News

As an “under control” type II diabetic I don’t consume alcohol with any real frequency.  However, I do occasionally break my diabetic beer fast with cheap beer.  Last year I found this story to relieve my conscience some. Quick sidebar: I long ago decided I wasn’t gonna pay a premium for fancy beer.

“A compound found in hops— one of the basic ingredients of beer— is capable of improving memory and thought patterns in mice, reported Quartz.”

“While hops are the only dietary source of the rare compound, it would require drinking 2,000 liters of beer— or 5,636 bottles of beer— for a person to get the same effect.”

That article raise the question of whether I could be mentally sharper than a mouse. That raises all kinds of OTHER interesting questions.

And… As the frequent late night ads offer – But Wait, There’s More!

Now Fox News is offering this: Top reasons beer is actually good for you. NOW it get’s fun…

“The National Osteoporosis Risk Assessment followed more than 200,000 females and found that drinking alcohol decreased the incidence of osteoporosis (7). All of this leads to a decrease in hip fractures in elderly females, which is important because hip fractures after the age of 65 are associated with a significant increase in mortality.

So, women, if you’re concerned about your bone health, don’t just focus on calcium; add some beer to your diet for another way to protect your bone density.”

So… If I drink beer I will have a better memory thing. If The Wife of 40 plus years drinks beer she’ll be better able to dance on my grave.

Sounds like a win-win to me.

    1. DAMN RIGHT it’s not just for breakfast anymore, DITTO with Bourbon, Scotch, Vodka, Gin, or Tequila! 😀

        1. Well then what about SOJU? Anyone here ever enjoyed that beverage in search of a buzz? FORGET ABOUT the overpriced version found in some liquor stores, I’m talking about JINRO, that makes tequilya look tame!!

          1. Soju??!! A headache in every jar!
Then there’s raki I had in Souda Bay, Crete. I think they used that to remove the tarnish from the bronze statues. Tastes like liquorish, once. Turkish ouzo, deadly stuff.
Brains overboard, made you 9 feet tall and covered with hair. Grrrrr…

            1. Back in my AD days in Korea the urban legend about soju was that it was made with a touch of formaldehyde and the trick was to leave it sitting at room temperature for a few days which would make it percolate to the top of the bottle and then one would just gently uncap it and give it a sideways shake to get rid of it. Yeah, my liver still shakes in fear whenever I even think of the stuff!

      1. Ahh, Tim, with the advent of microwaves and refrigeration, one can reverse that mix.
And you don’t have to ask how I know this. 😉

  1. Improve memory by drinking beer? Nope, it doesn’t work – I know…..been trying for many years.

Best beer I’ve ever had – Bourbon County Stout by Goose Island Beer Company.

    1. One of my favorites is Arrogant Bastard Ale®™, I’M SURE it was named after me!!! 😈

      1. Have to go out and fill the garage fridge with the appropriate beverages later today (just in case the sun comes out on LI) for the holiday weekend. My local guy, Hicksville Beer and Soda has the best choices and prices of micro/craft beer around here, so I’ll look to see if your “namesake” beer is in stock….if not I’m sure I’ll find something arrogant enough. 😉

        Enjoy your weekend.

  2. 5,636 bottles of beer on the wall
    5,636 bottles of beer
    take one down,
    pass it around
    5,635 bottles of beer

    1. 5636 bottles? Hell, that’s less than 235 cases. No problem!

Yeah, right. You buy that, I’ve got a great deal on a bridge . . . . (smile

  3. Well, so much for part one of tomorrow’s “Friday Funny”. Oh well – maybe I can salvage something. (smile)

    1. Well, if you can’t think of anything else you can always go with boobs for the guys and a picture of CSM Dailey for the ladies.

      1. BOOBS ARE good for us guys, but pics like those found in any of G. Gordon Liddy’s “Babes With Guns” calendars are just fine as well, better yet, pin-up babes in short skirts, spandex, or tight pants and high heels posing with guns, *slobber, drool*…

        1. Just Binged “Babes with Guns” and it wasn’t exactly what I had in mind. Fortunately the wife was out of the room…

      1. De nada, amigo. With multiple people contributing articles, it happens from time to time.

One thing about the “not pay extra for fancy beer” bit, though. Many of the lower-end beers use the minimum amount of hops they can (hops are pretty expensive). Some of the premium brands (Sam Adams, most IPAs, probably many of the microbrews) use considerably more – and you can tell the difference.

I find that makes a difference to me – but I tend to like the bitter end of the spectrum when it comes to beers/ales. I personally find Yuengling a good compromise, but occasionally go for one of the higher-end ones. YMMV.

Bottom line: for taste, go with what pleases. But if you’re looking for hops, maybe try to catch Sam Adams or a decent IPA on sale. If you can, they’re usually not too stupidly high in price.

  4. Alcohol is the least-poisonous organic solvent, and your vitamins and phytonutrients are more soluble in alcohol the water. A beer or a glass of wine or two with dinner is probably protective. The key is to eat good food with the drink.

      1. Waitress, as she’s delivering bourbon, on the rocks, “Would you like to see a menu?”
Me “No thanks”, picking up said bourbon ,”I don’t eat with my meals.” 😉

  5. “Beer, Beer, Beer said the Private”…..maybe the Private was on to something?
