According to The Hill, James Sensenbrenner, a Republican Congressman from Wisconsin is proposing to ban the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives;
“The ATF is a scandal-ridden, largely duplicative agency that lacks a clear mission. Its ‘Framework’ is an affront to the Second Amendment and yet another reason why Congress should pass the ATF Elimination Act,” Sensenbrenner said in a statement.
The ATF has drawn the ire of Republican lawmakers for its proposed ban on an armor-piercing bullet used in AR-15 rifles. Republicans say that hunters frequently use the bullets. The bureau says it initiated the regulation to help protect law enforcement officers from bullets that can pierce armored vests.
Sensenbrenner’s bill would transfer the ATF’s functions related to guns, explosives and violent crime to the FBI. Meanwhile, responsibilities regarding alcohol and tobacco laws would fall under the Drug Enforcement Administration’s jurisdiction.
According to The Hill, the ATF would have 180 days to explain to Congress how they’ll reorganize the tenant agencies under their purview. They also say that John Conyors once proposed that the ATF be dismantled back in 1993, so this shoudl get broad bi-partisan support, right?

As the old saying goes: ATF should be a convenience store, not a government agency.
Finally a good idea out of congress…
Their leadership are a bunch of idiots. I had several chances during my LE career to work with some ATF guys; I actually preferred working with them over any other federal LE agency. But if the bullet ban is the kind of things their bosses are coming up with then we either need to change the ATF’s leadership or shit can the whole organization.
i have had similar experiences with the ATF. Good agents with terrible leadership. Now with them being used as the presidents goon squad it is time to go.
I agree with this. Both ATF and DEA agents on the street are straight-forward and hard working cops; the leadership leaves a lot to be desired, because of a shitload of politics.
The only experience I’ve ever had with them was a few years back when a pipe bomb was discovered at a local charity event. My engine was assigned to stand (way, way) back in the event that it might detonate during the investigation and removal process. Several BATFE personnel were present while the Sheriff’s bomb unit did their thing. I spent two hours talking guns with one of the agents. He was a pretty decent dude, very down-to-earth, and a fellow gun nut.
As we were talking, his supervisor, a very attractive female walked by, heard us talking, said a few unkind words to us, and walked away. The agent I was talking to just rolled his eyes and said, “Yeah, she’s a self-righteous liberal bitch who thinks she knows everything. Thinks she’s some kind of anti-gun holy crusader. And thinks we’re all a bunch of dumb rednecks.” (Note: this agent was a black dude)
I asked how she had advanced with such an attitude, as she looked roughly my age, which was noticeably younger than him. He simply asked if I had noticed that she was hot and added, “Give Ya three guesses how she promoted past me.”
I said, “Oh. Okay,”
He added, “Yeah, that kind of thing happens a lot in our Bureau. Plus she’s an anti-gun nazi just like most of our leadership, so she’s pretty much batting a thousand as far as they’re concerned.”
I asked him why he would stick around in such an environment, he answered, “If all the guys like me quit, then there’d be nobody to keep the morons like her from being the Gestapo.”
Leadership. Like B Todd “The Toad” Jones?
Yeh, I remember ATF as well, and one of the arrogant John Wayne types always told people he was “walking the tightrope of danger and intrigue” the a.h.had never been out of the office I think….they are a freaking waste of time and money!!
I’m not sure how much faith I have in the FBI. I hope things have changed, but our saying about them was “Masters of follow up, but couldn’t solve a burglary in progress.”
My dad tells a story about the FBI when he was with the State Police.
He says they called him one time about a BOLO they had and wanted to know if he might have been seen in the area.
Dad starts asking them questions like “Does he have a tattoo on his arm of this?” “Is he about this tall with this color hair?” and so on.
The FBI guy is getting happier by the moment as dad keeps giving him more and more details “Yeah, that’s our guy! Where did you see him?”
“In my jail. He’s been here since I called you last week to come get him.”
Holy crap!
That is … mmmm, not sure which adjective to use, I guess pathetic works best.
My typical interaction with them was at bank robberies and went something like this
FBI – “What happened?
US – “Robbery, subject description is XXX”
FBI – “anyone in custody?”
US – ” Nope”
FBI – “Call us if you find out anything, bye”
Or
FBI – “What happened?”
US – “Robbery, subject description is XXX”
FBI – “anyone in custody?”
US – “Yep, car chase four in custody weapons and money recovered”
FBI – “we’ll be back with a warrant shortly, hold our suspects for us”
US – “Gee, thanks for all your help”
Sounds about right.
Dad’s statement is that they will investigate the hell out of anything but actual law enforcement is beyond them.
Also, don’t get between the FBI and a news camera, you’ll get trampled in the stampede.
3E9, sounds like that’s the SOP for the Feebs. Been there, done that, too.
You want to see some serious boils on bums about the FBI, talk with the GBI (Geogia Bureau of Investigation, state agency) about the Wayne Williams investigation.
Just make sure to have a fire extinguisher handy when you start that conversation!
“…GEORGIA…” Sorry.
I believe the correct spelling is Jeowja. Thats based solely on hearing it spoken for the past three years here at Benning.
I once briefly hooked up with a girl from Augusta who insisted that it’s “JARJA.”
I was at Grand Jury last year and was waiting with a guy that was either directly involved or was around when that happened. He worked for Cobb County PD.
He was telling us tales of picking on Atlanta PD detectives while on stake out under the bridges. He said they would float balloons and inflated condoms to each other to make the time pass. He also said there was a bit of controversy about the APD detective that heard the splash under the South Cobb Drive bridge that night. Evidently he was probably asleep when it happened.
It was interesting to hear him talk about that. He kept it clean and never mentioned the FBI, though.
LOL That’s Phoebe alright, stupidest, laziest bunch of media hounds in the world!
Defunding it would also work. Particularly if the provision was attached to the law authorizing funds for the operations of the EOP and White House.
Come on guys, they are only following the dictates of the Dear Reader. This ‘Proposal’ stinks of the Whitehouse. Just like every other initiative of the federal Alphabet Corps. If you ever worked in the government, you know that modern bureaucrats can’t use the toilet without a memo from their next higher management. And that level can’t write the memo without pushing the request even higher. This Whitehouse does not foster an environment of independent thought or action. This administration needs to be Impeached and rebooted. If the BATF is dumped the EPA will claim that lead bullets are causing Global Climate Change and that only by banning them can we save the planet. If that doesn’t work the IRS can unilaterally impose a draconian tax on each round based on some obscure sportsman tax law. This is what the founders feared when they wrote the Bill of rights. It took a while, but their fears have been realized.
They already trashed lead bullets. That’s why DoD adopted the lead-free M855A2, despite the fact that it’s more expensive, less effective, and tears up M4 barrels like it’s cool.
So it would seem.
Alas … poor Babylon … how are the mighty fallen.
Just made large purchase of 223 American Eagle.
Right On!!! Get rid of the worthless agency. It’s only value anymore is a tool for liberal presidents and other critters.
Call it the M123 etc then change the grain weight to 61.5 or 62.5 on paper. Loosen up the tolerance to .5+ or .5-. Then the grain will be from 61 to 63 grains on paper. When mysteriously rounds keep coming out at 62 grains just say they’re within tolerances. If need be shave a 1/4 millimeter off the tip and add it to the rear… on paper 😉 ;). Seriously anyone who has done any machining or blue print work can see an easy out of this “ban.”
