Specialist Logan Sutherland saving the world

Logan Southerland

The Army Times tells us about Logan Sutherland a specialist in the California Army Reserve who was coming home from a New Years Eve party last week. He saw a man waving for help alongside the roadway;

[Southerland] leaped from the car before his girlfriend stopped it and found himself facing a Ford Explorer that had rammed a retaining wall at an intersection just off Highway 101 north of Santa Rosa.

The SUV was on fire, and the driver was inside. Another rescuer had a skateboard, Sutherland told Army Times on Monday night, “and I got him to bash in the back passenger window [with it], behind the driver’s seat.”

Sutherland unbuckled the woozy driver’s seat belt and removed him from the SUV as the flames crept closer to the cabin. The specialist, a horizontal construction engineer with 801st Engineer Battalion out of Vallejo, said he initially thought the man’s mental fog may have stemmed from a concussion.

Apparently the driver was intoxicated and the police arrested him at the hospital, but he’s alive thanks to the quick-thinking Army Specialist

  1. Well done, SPC Sutherland. Damn well done.

Hopefully your chain-of-command took note and does the right thing here.

    1. Don’t count on it.
THey’ll knock down a reccommendation for the Soldiers Medal to a certificate of achievement.
Maybe an AAM if he’s lucky.

      1. Probably true because:

        A.) He isn’t a female NCO

B.) It had nothing to do with diversity or sexual harassment, etc.

They’ll likely just claim that because he is a whit male, that’s he’s doing penance to atone for his white privilege.

        1. He’s actually going to get an NJP for his white privilege, misogyny, and other sexual assault when he raped that female with his white devil eyes.

EO officer is considering him for a vacation as a prisoner at GITMO since there is room due to Hussein releasing all the misunderstood good guys.

  2. Good on him.

One question though: What does a Horizontal Construction Engineer build?

Does that imply that there are Vertical Construction Engineers?

      1. Horizontal construction builds things like roads (they build out); vertical construction builds things like buildings (they build up). At least that was the rule of thumb when I was in. So, yes your bulldozer operator or road grader operator would be in a horizontal construction unit. Your carpenters, etc would be in a vertical construction unit.

  3. Another great reason why our military personnel are only getting a 1% raise in 2015.

From MOAA: The Pentagon plan extends the 1 percent pay cap through 2017, rising to 1.5 percent in 2018, and 1.8 percent in 2019.

    Good job, Spec. Sutherland!

    1. I wonder what percentage of COLA raises our Military and Vets get these days versus what the pols in DC treat themselves to, ditto with perks and luxuries!!!

  4. A quote from General James Howard (WW2 Flying Tiger and USAAF fighter pilot over Europe, MOH recipient):

“I seen my duty and I done it.”

Applies to Specialist Sutherland as well.

  5. I used to have an E-4 Sutherland from Oregon as one of my Airmen. Similar looks. I wonder if they’re related?

  6. Spc. Sutherland, good job! Your actions speak about you as a person and reflect your character. The reflection is good. Keep it up. I value what you did, I think that the TAH community shares that view.
