A Legend Has Passed

Jack Bruce has passed.  He died on 25 October 2014 of liver disease, aged 71.

Yeah, I’m guessing that his admittedly heavy use of chemicals may well have been partly to blame.  That was his choice in life.

If you’re thinking you recall the name, you should.  If you ever heard anything by Cream – Bruce was the one that provided the bass, and probably wrote most or all of the song.  He was a damn talented and innovative musician and a groundbreaking bassist for popular music.

Bruce was also one helluva songwriter.  Reputedly, the one featured below was mostly his – as were most of Cream’s songs.  It all evens out, I guess; though a guy named Eric gets the kudos for his guitar work thereon, Bruce ended up with more of the royalties.

RIP, Jack.  We hardly knew ye.

  1. Yes Hondo a true music legend is gone. Jack Bruce had more talent than most of his day and since. Often unnoticed and unsung in the background Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker. But without Bruce there could never have been “Cream”. By the way, I always thought Ginger Baker was a great talent but also a prima donna, ass hole. IMHO.

    1. I’d cut Ginger Baker some slack…he has plenty of company. I mean is he any worse than some legendary hard to get along mercurial types?:

      John Lennon/Paul McCartney
      Don Henley/Glen Frey
      Roger Daltry/Pete Townshend
      Mick Jagger/Keith Richards
      Roger Waters/David Gilmour
      Eddie Van Halen/David Lee Roth
      Jimmy Page
      Jim Morrison

“Beware Mr. Baker” is on Netflix. Ginger is a f’ng genius & a total maniac…man what a hell of a documentary of a legend gone a bit batshit crazy.

  2. Yes Ginger Baker is an ass – “Beware Mr Baker” is a great documentary.
Jack Bruce was a great bass player RIP.

  3. Jack was classically trained as a musician (notice the fret less bass he played), and yes he wrote most of their stuff. But, boy were they talented. He and Ginger fought like cats and dogs but became close later. A ton of talent he had as did the other two, but all that talent, energy, and drugs just didn’t work out well.

    1. With drugs in the mix, NOTHING ends well. It’s either get rid of them, or they will get rid of you.

    1. Ya beat me to it, Zee. “White Room” is the BOMB!!

Had a killer sound system – for 1968 🙂 – in my metallic gold, fully built,’65 Barracuda and I always cranked it for White Room, Badge, I’m So Glad, Sunshine of Your Love and Light My Fire.

And later on Grand Funk Railroad.
