Jodi Rives Meier; teaching vets is hard

Jodi Rives Meier

Our buddy, Nickie, sent us a link on Facebook about this “teacher” Jodi Rives Meier, a part-time Communication instructor at Butte College’s Chico, California campus, who wrote this about her students who are vets on Facebook;

There are reasons recruiters draw heavily from undereducated populations–two of them being they are often desperate and that uninformed folks ask fewer questions. Students with poor academic performance are almost universally encouraged to go into the military and, lord knows, their skills do not improve while in the service.

I suspect that if she was a conservative and wrote that about any other group of Americans, the Left would be crawling up her ass with a microscope. And a woman like her, a liberal, would be leading the charge. But she’s not a conservative and she’s talking about veterans, one of those unpopular species of humans, so she gets all butt hurt when the media shows up at her door without warning. She writes on her Facebook page;

So, it turns out, if you post a MILLION times about social causes–suicide prevention, mental health awareness, LGBT+ issues, rape culture, fiscal meltdowns, local theater–no one in the media could give a shit. But, post about the military–and get a few boys with hurt feewings–and Jerry Olenyn from whatever channel shows up on your doorstep pushing for a response on video for the “lead story at 6:30.” Which you’ve heard nothing about. And when you say you feel uncomfortable having a news reporter “ambush” you at your home–where he is uninvited and is not a public place–when you are in your pajamas on your day off, he gets a little testy about being offended at your attack on him. And then the neighbors call the police. And then he tries to make the police call part of the story. And then you are just sick to damn death with all the bullshit. So, watch it at 6:30, I guess.

You don’t have to wait until 6:30, you can see the video at this link. She tells the interviewer with an analogy about rotten apples, that there’s something wrong with the barrel.

First of all, I’m not surprised that her students who are veterans are having a rough time in her classes. Many of them just came back from a war, about which she knows nothing. Adjusting to a classroom after that experience might be tough. Apparently, instead of trying to help those students, she’d rather chastise the entire group. If veterans were a race, I’d say she’s a racist, but she’s just a bigoted turd.

In an interview Rives said she stands by her posts adding that military personnel are being ill-served in preparing for civilian life.

“I can’t show specific student work. But if I were able to do that, which I would not because it would violate their privacy … clearly, you would be able to see that these are people struggling with academic skills,” Rives said.

In response to another person’s post, Rives discusses “military guys” having a large pool of people to rape, a comment she defended.

“It’s not just the case of one or two incidents,” Rives said. “How many apples have to be bad before we suspect that the barrel has problems?”

Yeah, we’re all stupid and we joined the military so we could rape people. This little bigot has no place in civil society. Maybe it’s not “the barrel” that’s the problem, Maybe it’s Jodi Rives Meier. After all students are only as good as their teacher.

As @Yes, Nick Searcy! would say, she’s also fat.

  1. I guess Jodi didn’t like the fact that I gleaned so much from her Facebook page. She locked it down tight. LOL

That’s OK. We have other ways.

  2. Apparently, she doesn’t think highly of college students in general. Check these reviews out:

“Ignorant, narrow minded, biased. Distorted reality from her self-doubt. Should consider a career with a paper hat.”

“Ignorant, self centered. Bashes the very people coming for help communicating.”

“Very one sided or her views. Disagree with her and your grade will suffer. AVOID”

    1. I don’t take a lot of stock in the reviews from the last couple of days – I think we’re safe estimating that they’re from people who haven’t taken her class, but are reacting to the news articles. However, there are some telling ones interspersed with the ones from students drinking her Kool-Aid: condescending, hates America, self-centered, thinks her students are idiots, and (even from her fans) wastes lots of class time talking about her personal problems. It’s one thing to spend a couple minutes at the start of class breaking the ice with a little chitchat, and another to spend an entire hour talking about yourself. I would’ve been seriously annoyed by her if I’d had her as an instructor, back in my day.

      1. (And I meant to add, those are all not recent reviews from haters reacting to the news cycle – those reviews go back years and years. It sounds like she’s been a problem for awhile now.)

        1. She gets shitty ratings over a fairly long period of time and the university does nothing about it. Well at least I assume they did nothing, cause she still teaches. Yeah, color me shocked. If you espouse the proper views, you can suck at your job in the world of academia.

        2. Zactly. I don’t give credence to the reviews from the last few days – those are well meaning (but not honest) angry folks who are just slamming her for this flap she’s brought on herself. But there are years of reviews, even from her fans, that demonstrate she has a history of wasting students’ time with her irrelevant personal opinions and stories.

  3. @ 3/17 Air Cav,

You pronounced it correctly, “Bin Tooie”! Binh Tuy, one of several provinces I vacationed in during the sixties. You know the country don’t you?

It’s one of the two countries obama’s wannabe appointee described. Let me think… oh yeah, it’s South Vietnam. They are now at peace with North Vietnam and they trade goods back and forth. North and South Vietnam standing side by side in peace. Look at all the pretty rainbows!

    1. BinhTuy66…… Jesus, you were there early. I was a senior in high school in 1966. I beat the bush with the 1st Cav. Out of Phuoc Vinh for a short while. Thank god it was short.

I remember Binh Tuy while flying with the 3/17 Air Cav. Must have landed there a few times. But I don’t remember it.

My vacation in Southeast Asia was 1971. Great time flying the friendly sky’s.

      You take good care………Steve

    2. @Binhtuy 66….. Jesus you were vacationing early. 1966 I was a senior in high school.

My vacation was 1971. Beat the bush with the 1st. Cav. For a short while. Thank god it was short.

I remember BinhTuy while flying with the Air Cav. Probably landed there but don’t remember it.

      You take good care……Steve

      1. 3/17 Air Cav, my vacation flight time with the 101st Airborne (Phu Bai) was also in 71-72. Perhaps one of these days when Jonn gives us an open weekend thread we can talk a little about it. Maybe we can get 2/17 Air Cav in on the conversation also as C Troop 2/17 occupied the adjoining set of revetments next to my company (C, 101 AHB Black Widows)on the flight line.

        1. Claw131…..sounds good. I would love to have a conversation with “The Boys”

          1. 3/17, Steve,I’m Charlie. Yes, a conversation would be good. I don’t know for sure if 2/17 Air Cav was there at the same time as I was, but it would be a good topic to get started on. I was just a lowly PFC/SP4 Crew Chief/Door Gunner in 1st Flight Platoon and my nick name was “Hoosier” since I was just a farm boy from rural (and I mean really rural)Indiana. Looking forward to having a conversation with you to.

  4. I foresee a move south to Stockton and Delta College – perhaps there she will find the elusive tenure…

  5. I held 3.9 GPA at Boston University studying Computer Networks, and a 3.89 while majoring in Architecture. I did not lack intelligence or ability academically, even after completing 12 years in the US Army as an Infantryman/Paratrooper.
As to her other comments made about rape… instances of rape on college campuses far outnumber those reported in the US Military. This is not to excuse the behavior; it is abhorrent no matter where it exist. Her attitude is abhorrent and in my opinion has no place in the education system.

  6. To paraphrase her, it’s not just a case of one or two comments. Her Facebook comments, on a variety of subjects, show her to be an angry, bitter, spiteful person. It must really suck to be her.

  7. I guess I must be one of those dumbasses she’s talking about. I turned down a 4 year scholarship (not full boat but really close) to join the infantry in 1977…due to the military’s inability to prepare me for civilian life I’ve only been able to become the operating general manager of 3 different companies.

Additionally I volunteer my time to operate a sports program that services 6,000 children in western Massachusetts, I’ve written grants to get funding for non-profit park construction….

Compared to many ex-military personnel my accomplishments are nothing, but they are typical of the people I know who have served. We rise above our co-workers to become senior level managers and we continue to give of ourselves in service to our community.

If Ms. Meier believes those of us in the military are ill-equipped for civilian life she might try working in the private sector instead of the hallowed halls of education and she just might get an idea of how the real world works….in the real world I prefer ex-military personnel because I know exactly what I am getting when I hire them. Hard working, task oriented, dependable workers who care about achieving success. The privileged children of success tend to be unreliable and more concerned with their personal lives than accomplishing a work success.

But what do I know, I’m just one of those kids from a low income background who was too stupid to take the scholarship so I joined the military…

Fuck you Ms. Meier, you are an ass.

    1. “Compared to many ex-military personnel my accomplishments are nothing, but they are typical of the people I know who have served. We rise above our co-workers to become senior level managers and we continue to give of ourselves in service to our community.”

One of her problems may be that she is envious of the success of Veterans.

But more likely she isn’t prejudiced, she probably hates everybody.

      1. Judging by her comments to her son and what she says about Mormons, you hit the nail on the head. She hates everybody thats not her. She cheated on her deployed spouse and had the audacity to blame her infidelity on him.

    2. I’m wondering if I’ll get a comment from her eventually, making excuses, telling me how it’s not her fault, and that I don’t know anything about her or what she’s been through, etc. Maybe even threatening a lawsuit. Can’t wait for that!

  8. At one point I had a SAW gunner that had a net worth in the millions and a Team Leader that was drafted into the NHL. That kind of blows her only the poor join the Military meme out of the water.

  9. Let me just address the “unprepared” claim this cunt is making. Keep in mind that I have never served in the military, having been a firefighter since before graduating high school. In the last 13 years, I have worked for, with, and above many veterans. Here’s a brief review.

Vet #1: a Captain I worked for early in my career. Army Air Cav, Vietnam vet.
Grouchy old bastard, but taught a great deal and had high expectations for everybody. Very protective of his crew. Retired after a long and successful career. Married, 2 kids, 2 grandkids.

Vet #2: an Engineer I worked for when I was brand-new. Marine Infantry, Desert Storm vet. Highly skilled fireman, great teacher & mentor, excellent leadership skills. Has since promoted to Captain. Very successful. Married, 1 kid

Vet #3: Firefighter, and my best friend. Marine Infantry. Exceptional fireman, great leadership skills, stood out every day. Went back into the Reserves and volunteered to go to Iraq. KIA 9/24/2005.

Vet #4: Engineer. Navy Corpsman, Green Side. Excellent fireman, great leader, great instructor & mentor. Married, 3 kids, 1grandkid.

Vet #5: Engineer. Army National Guard Infantry, OIF Iraq Vet. Excellent fireman, rapidly promoted to engineer. Does a great job.

Vet #6: Senior Firefighter. Army Infantry. Great fireman, great leader, highly motivated, will be promoted soon. Married, 2 kids.

Vet #7: Senior Firefighter. Navy Damage Controlman. Great firefighter, great leader, highly motivated, will be promoted soon. Married.

Vet #8: Navy aircraft carrier Flight Deck Crew. Great fireman, great leader, great instructor, highly motivated, will be promoted soon. 2 kids.

Vet #9: new Firefighter. Marine Combat Engineer, Iraq vet. Exceptional firefighter, highly motivated, performs like he’s been doing it all his life, great attitude

Vet #10: new Firefighter. Navy Rescue Swimmer & A-School instructor. Learns fast, highly motivated, works his ass off, promising career ahead of him

Vet #11: new FIrefighter (female, no less). Marine Air Wing Ordnance Handler. Learns fast, highly motivated, works her ass off, has a perfectionist streak that drives her to train on anything and everything well after dinner. Promising career ahead of her. Married, 1 kid.

These are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Clearly their success is due to the fact that they were completely unprepared for life outside the military, right?

(Note: “Engineer” is my department’s intermediate rank between Firefighter and Captain. Outside of California, the equivalent rank in most fire departments is Lieutenant or occasionally Sergeant)

  10. What shoots her out of the water is that it’s not like she is advocating starting a program for veterans who need a boost in their communications skills to be competetive in school. She just wants to slander the military.
Not to mention any community college will make students take a placement test to see what level of class they should be taking. if she is teaching remedial ALL her students are in the same boat. If she is teaching more than basic they all have the skills to work at that level.

  11. Good evening everybody,

Thought I’d give you a little update form the KRCR 7 Monday eve news where they did a followup story:

Things are heating up at Butte Community College, she was asked to remove any reference to the school from her Facebook page. There is an investigation by the Dean and school. Butte Community College is not happy. KRCR News recapped several nasty comments from her Facebook page.

The “little” (sarc.) liberal claims she’s received hundred’s of death or injury threats on Facebook. Yeah, right! Playing the “poor me” thing.

After phone and e-mail interviews over the weekend she eventually told KRCR 7, per her attorney she would not give any further interviews. Watching the news story it appeared to me that she may have continued dialogue with the news, then cut it off with the attorney BS after she got no sympathy, however that’s my opinion.

Jodi, I hope you’re enjoying all your “Flash to Fame” attention you’re receiving. Enjoy it you savior of education. What a laughing stock you’ve made of your Junior College.

  12. Adding on to the earlier post about her prior students entries on “Rate My Professor”,,,
There seems to be a pattern of pigheadedness, laziness and outright over-the-top liberal bias going on in her class, which by the way is more or less “Public Speaking”
She has almost 60 reviews going back to 2003, and they all say pretty much the same thing, She is a blow hard, wastes time and spends half the time on a soapbox talking about herself.
A lot of the students that gave her “high marks” admitted they did so because she was a azy teacher who wasted so much time that there was little for the students to have to do, hence the average grade in her class is,, get this,,, an A+,,,, So much for her having a hard time teaching.

Anyway heres a good portion of the bad reveiws she got, I purposfully left out several from the past few weeks since they were probably tainted by her recent ass hattery.

    Enjoy:
She will blabber all class about her personal life and will often get nothing done. Is easily distracted with lectures. Only 4 speeches due all year, she grades them hard though. Class is rather open for random discutions, you will get to know your class mates really good. Nice lady. Bad teacher. Easy class. Don’t take speech 4, this one is easier!

Jodi is a great person in my opinion but a horrendously sloppy teacher. She does a great job at making a comfortable environment, however there is no order whatsoever. If you want to get something done it will not happen in this class. If all you want is a grade for attending and putting forth little effort then she is the teacher for you.

This class is great if you are looking for an easy A. However, she hates America and makes it known. She also thinks that college students are idiots and she is a very opinionated liberal. Also, you mainly spend 3 hours a day listening to her stories and opinions, don’t expect to leave the class with any new found knowledge.

She tells a bunch of entertaining stories, unfortunately they literally take up half of the 3 hour class where we could be doing something productive.

Do not take this class unless you want to hear about jodi’s life and her family, because that is all she talks about. the class is easy because you never do anything but listen to her talk (and she loves to hear herslef talk).

She spends at least 30 mins per class talking about her political agenda, screwed up life, and other kinds of nonsense. The class is decently easy, but you have to constantly be on top of your syllabus because she doesn’t always warn you about due dates. Not a terrible class, but overall waste of time.

he is terrible. Calls her students “minions” which in my opinion, is derogatory and rude. She is also crass and talks a lot of NOTHING but herself and what we learn is mediocre. TAKE SOMEONE else!! Please! You’ll thank me later I promise!

Jodi talks the whole time-about herself, her children and husbands. SUCH a waste of time. We are paying you for an education. And of course we all need better communication skills. She has nothing important to say. The stories unrelated to the material and really longwinded 20-30 minutes at a time about complete nonsense.

Jodi is an idiot that had the nerve to insult another respected and admired teacher at Butte College on the first day of her class. She is taking his class and probably can’t handle the fact that the material is over her head because she is not talking about herself for 2 hrs.

If you don’t mind hearing about her husband and family non-stop, take the class. It is easy. Just show up and do your time. If you are older than 25, she’ll just ignore you for a few weeks. But, hang in there because it is a piece of cake to get a good grade.

if you want an easy class, take her because half the time she cancles class and the other half she talks the whole time about her personal life. you dont really learn much.

Yes, she does get off track…just sit up front and enjoy the fun.

The semester could have been completed in one class, the rest of the time is filled with personal stories and opinions.

This class was interesting. Look at her myspace and that will explain a lot! She is very liberal. Very one sided. She tells lots of stories. The final was ridiculous she had us hop across “hot lava” using paper and we played a game called elf, giant, wizard just like roshambo. I felt like a two year old.

Decent. Goes off on stories frequently. Most are amusing, some aren’t. 3hr class once a week, never get out early. She gets mixed up between classes and assigns work she hasn’t even informed one class of. But it’s “In the Syllabus.” Not recommended.

She is very opinionated, lots of stories. I took it over summer and you spend a lot of time with her and other students so you get to know everyone well, quite a few international students, I LOVED this part, very diverse class. You have to be open-minded or you’ll be offended. If you need public speaking, it was fun and a easy A.

Group Discussion- Everything I learned in this class I could have learned in one afternoon in a group discussion/communications workshop. The entire semester is listening to her ramble on about herself and her children and other job. SUCH a waste of time. We are paying you for an education. And of course we all need better communication skills. ugh

I received an A in this class and went to everyone. Jodi is one of the worst teacher that I have ever had. If you do not have an opinion that does not fully agrees with hers than she will literally yell at you until you give up trying. She loves to her herself talk and really has nothing of importance to say. I learned nothing in this class.

If you don’t like lotsa stories, sometimes irrelevant-not recommended.

Kinda controversial class for speech. Jodi is extremely liberal minded, if you get offended by hearing pres bush and republicans bashed, dont take this class. In general pretty easy as long as you show up and give the speeches. Jodi does talk about a lot of personal things

Rants 20-30 minutes at a time about complete non-sequiters. Ironically, she complains about bad movies sucking out her life force; I can feel my brains melting out my ears as she goes on and on. She’s reputed to be easy, but only take her if your tolerance for time wasting personal stories is incredibly (like, incredibly) high. Not recommended.

pends a lot of time on stories unrelated to the material or examples that are really longwinded. Also, if you are conservative, pro-Bush you may feel a little hammered (I’m not, but sometimes cringe in sympathy.)

I took a 2 hour night class, and the majority of the class was spent listening to her crazy stories that were usually unrelated to the class,

  13. Here’s the statement put out by the college president. I think it translates into “We love veterans, we don’t agree with what she said, she has a right to say it, don’t be mean to her, veterans are cool”. One of my soldiers, a guy who did two tours in Afghanistan, goes to Butte and considers it fairly veteran friendly. He doesn’t classes with this person.
