David Wise’s alternative lifestyle leads to Olympic gold
The story is from NBC’s coverage of the Olympics. And yeah – that’s the title they actually used for the article.
Want to know what NBC apparently considers an “alternative lifestyle”? Well, let’s see:
- Being married and a good father at age 23;
- Spending quality time with his family vice constant partying with friends;
- Attending church regularly; and
- Having thoughts about becoming a Pastor one day in the future.
Sheesh. “Alternative lifestyle” my azz. Sounds more to me like what’s generally called a “fine young man”.
But remember: the mainstream media isn’t biased or pushing an agenda. No, not at all.

How the hell they got that out of his comments… He stated “I think my lifestyle…” and he goes on to expound on what his life is like. I just do not understand how they view his lifestyle as “Alternative”, or declare that he said that his lifestyle was alternative.
I mean honestly when we hear “alternative lifestyle” we expect to see someone who is gay. Not some straight guy married and raising a child, while enjoying a career he loves.
Ah, but rb325th – that’s not the “Progressive” view. In their view, all lifestyles are equal – but some are more equal than others.
I’ll let you judge for yourself which ones they consider “more equal” these days.
Freudian slips often tell much about both the individual making them and/or their corporate mindset.
I have lived an “alternative lifestyle” for the past 33 years: I served in the U.S. Armed Forces…
Nothing But Communism and their editorial agenda.
To be fair, given the fact that most people his age are partying and being stupid, in this case, being smart and having a family and such IS alternative! 😉
For NBC and the rest of mainstream media anything that advocate their “normal” lifestyle is alternative. In reality their 2% of the population propaganda would make this guy seem like he is unfit for the Olympics if he didn’t win Gold. They praised the openly gay female speed skater from another country than they did anybody else.
It was a brief article so I’ll have to assume that the factors constituting his alternative lifestyle–parenting and attending church–are, in fact, the reasons his life is unusual. Funny how he is regarded as a youngster at 23. In my BT unit that would have qualified for the title of pappy. Ah, relativity is a wonderful thing.
When they have someone like Johnny Weir(do) dressing as he did to announce the figure skating, nothing surprises me from that network anymore. Just sayin’
How is that an alternative lifestyle? I wish I would’ve had my shit together half as well as this guy when I was his age!
@2.
Tell me about it.
I see and experience it everyday.
My kids get those kind of comments often – “you’re too young”, “don’t you want to party and not tie yourself down?”, etc. My daughter is married and they both want a large family right away. She is Air Guard, he is at AIT for Army Guard and wants to be a chaplain, among other things. My son is also Air Guard, has been working full-time since 18, and is taking classes full-time for his EMT certification before starting on his degree. None of them have ever lived the college student party type of life, they are adults.
The immaturity of most of the others their age drive them nuts!
I like the article, the headline is stupid but the article paints a great picture about an athlete and his family….I guess it’s telling that being 23 and being responsible seems like some alternative to the author of the piece…just because you wear baggy pants and ski the half-pipe doesn’t mean you need to be a doper or a drunk…
A better headline would have been:
“Wise beyond his years, or how a well-grounded athlete soars over the half-pipe to win gold.”
It’s ‘alternative’ because it’s SO retro to MY generation, when people did thinks like act responsible, spend time with their kids, go to church, and yet, somehow, they still had fun.
@ ex-PH2,
Square in the black, sister!
At 23, my grandfather was a machinegunner with the Australian Army in France during WWI
At 23, my father was training to be a Pharmacist’s Mate with the US Navy during WWII
At 23 I was an AW2 and had earned my Gold Navy aircrew wings.
At 23, my son had his CIB and was a fire team leader in his platoon with the 173rd Airborne in Afghanistan.
I guess we are all into that “alternative lifestyle” thing, eh? 🙂
At 23 I had 6 years time in service and was on my second wife. Ouch…
