Kenya; seige has ended

The Washington Post reports that the seige of the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya has ended according to President Uhuru Kenyatta. Casualties from the standoff are being reported as more than 60 dead and hundreds injured, but the death toll is expected to rise as government forces clear the mall.

Kenyatta said that he could not confirm reports by Kenya’s foreign minister that American and British citizens were among the heavily armed jihadists who stormed the Westgate Premier Shopping Mall on Saturday, massacred dozens of people and seized hostages. But he promised a full accounting of what happened, adding that experts are conducting forensic tests to determine the nationalities of the assailants.

Sixty-one civilians and six members of the security forces were killed in the bloodshed, Kenyatta said, reducing the government’s earlier official death toll of 62 civilians. But he added that bodies were still trapped under the rubble left after three floors of the mall collapsed during the tail end of the operation. The Kenyan Red Cross said that as many as 65 civilians reported to have been inside the mall remain missing.

The UK’s Mail speculates that the terror attack was led by Samantha Lewthwaite, the “White Widow” whose husband, Germaine Lindsay, was a suicide bomber in London’s 7/7 attacks in 2005;

Police are exploring whether she could be a hostage dressed in one of the terrorist’s clothes, but the Foreign Office is also examining Muslim convert Lewthwaite’s links to the massacre.

The 29-year-old mother of four, from the Home Counties, is now a leading figure in Al Shabaab – the terror group that has claimed responsibility for the killings in the Israeli-owned Westgate shopping centre.

Police believe she is the one of the group’s main financiers and bomb-making tutors. However, sources admit they still do not know the full extent of her involvement in the attack in Nairobi.

Sky News reported that they saw men dressed as women with guns in the opening moments of the attack;

A government minister said that the terrorists who attacked the shopping complex in Nairobi were all men, but added that some were dressed as women.

Earlier, a white woman wearing a veil was reportedly spotted shouting orders to gunmen in Arabic during the attack on the Westgate complex in the Kenyan capital.

  2. We can only hope that human tissue bearing her DNA will be found in the debris of the building that was blown up by the terrorists as the military closed in on them. Live by the sword, die by the Semtex. I would suggest that any group of more than four armed Somalis be Droned and Hellfired. They certainly have proved that they deserve it.

  10. So, the bad guys are dressing as muslim women? Huh; who woulda thunk it? Not that that’s ever been done, before, and since no one will dare to have a veiled woman expose her face for identification, this will continue to be one of the methods used by the bad guys.

  12. I’m not letting the so-called “human rights” movement off the hook on this one. I’m speaking specifically about Amnesty Int’l — with the exception of those who stood with Gita Sahgal to oppose their alliances.

    They’ve spent the last 12 years cuddling up with radical Islamists who support the jihad. The very least they could have done during this time is demand (or how about, at least just asking?) their Islamist friends to declare some acceptable boundaries.

    Every so-called “human rights” activist should be ashamed of themselves.
