101st celebrates 70 years

The Washington Times reports that the storied 101st Airborne Division is celebrating it’s 70th birthday this year;

On Aug, 16, 1942, the Army created the first paratrooper divisions, with the nation still reeling from Japan’s surprise attack on Pearl Harbor the previous December. The 101st Airborne Division and the Fort Bragg, N.C.-based 82nd Airborne Division would go on to redefine war strategies from World War II to Vietnam to the Middle East.

The Week of the Eagles is commemorating that legacy with games, a concert, an air show and memorials to the fallen, with each day dedicated to the major wars that have created the unique legacy of the Screaming Eagles. The event culminates with a division review on the parade field.

  1. Was in the 101st Pathfinders in my active duty days. Coolest unit I was ever in.

    The division is very up on it’s history too, I thought more than most 82nd units I’d seen.
    Proud to have served in both.

  2. #1 Mike: “Proud to have served in both.”
    Me too. Starting off in a career with NCO’s that had been everywhere (including some Master Blaster Gold Stars), was the best training this butter bar could have ever had.

  3. Was at 3/187th and HHC 3rd Brigade from 94-96. G-d bless the division and anyone who has ever had their Rendezvous With Destiny.

  4. I was in C 1/327th from 1997-2002. I vividly remember the Week of the Eagle. A week of practicing standing at attention and parad rest on the parade field.

  5. Week of the Eagles is going on right now. Anybody remember how fun the Division runs were? 200 meters of sprinting followed by slamming into the guy in front of you when you come to a screeching halt, followed by 10 seconds of walking…..repeat for 4 miles. C co 1-187 2007-present
