Last month we reported on an article in the York Daily Record about Tony Terry Sallada, a local ice cream man who claimed to be a POW and a Special Forces veteran of Vietnam. The YDR has removed the text which refers to him as a POW and his service in Vietnam in the internet article thanks, largely to your emails.

Steve writes to tell us that he’s known Sallada for more than 20 years and he travels to local schools to tell them about his life as a POW and his service in Vietnam. We’re still waiting for his records to come back, but it seems to me that the Daily Record would get a hard-on for the guy since he fooled them, and it seems to me that a reporter would smell a good story about exposing a local fraud.

  2. I would drink to that, but the YDR does do a wonderful job of posting the county’s most wanted. I live in the neighboring county, where Lancaster’s newspaper came out with a marvelously shift op-ed on why taking down Stolen Valor was magnificent and necessary. I make the case, as writers on this blog have so well, that the assumed mantle of awesomesauce goes hand in hand with destructive, sociopath behaviors.

    I’m cynical about journalist support for SCOTUS’ move. Printing retractions or fact-checking are hallmarks of a bygone era. Today’s media is far too supine and lazy to do their due diligence. I was sickened to learn NPR, for instance, filed an amicus brief in support of Alvarez’s arguments.

  3. Correction * Terry Sallada. Thanks for looking into this. YDR needs to look into this. Enough is enough let’s put an end to guy pretending to be POW!

  4. How does this keep happening? I mean, how hard is it really to check and see someone’s military record, and why do these guys never think anyone’s going to do it? You guys have been doing a fantastic job exposing these yahoos, but it boggles my mind that they’d try it in the first place.

    1. It is a prime example of Cult of Personality. The poser cuts a dashing figure and tells a dashing tale. They make a habit of surrounding themselves with others who never served and / or don’t know where to to look or what to look for. And Voila! One instant (not) HERO!!

    It Boggles my mind as well. This man has been telling this lie for years and I’m blown away. I would think people would want to expose these liars. It’s awful they can do this.

    Maybe you should practice what you preach there Terry?

  9. This website is full of lies. Please do not believe anything you read in here. Terry Sallada is in fact who he says to be and people like this site spreading lies and rumors saying otherwise is not only pethetic, but sad.

    4. Well, I’m convinced you’re his daughter. I mean, who else would post a comment that reads, “Please do not believe anything you read in here?” You probably don’t see the problem with that. Well, either that or you are hoping no one reads your comment, which sort of defeats the purpose of commenting. And you probably don’t get that either.

  13. Terry L Sallada born 1952, graduated Northeastern Senoir High School Manchester Pa in 1970. He would be of age to Maybe catch the tail end of Vietnam.

  17. Are there any prisoners or war, including those prisoners for only days that are not listed? Yes. Has a prisoner of war ever intentionally been left off the list. I know for a fact this has happened.
    Be very careful when making claims of untruthfulness. Social networks and websites do not reveal all knowledge.
