Oh, well, I’m human

Our buddy, Doug Sterner, forwarded an email report of the Facebook page of one Gida Torre Mamaril;

Sorry, Gida, but there has only been one woman to ever receive the Medal of Honor, Dr. Mary E. Walker, who was awarded the MOH on November 11th, 1865. Unfortunately for you, I know about her because she was born and buried near my alma mater where the student health center is named for her at Oswego State University. While checking my facts, I learned this from the Home of Heroes;

There are, however, the names of TWO women on the Roll of Honor. During the Vietnam War Marine Captain Jay R. Vargas received the Medal of Honor. Before his award could be presented to him his mother passed away at home in Arizona. Vargas requested that his mother’s name be engraved on the back of his Medal of Honor instead of his own. President Nixon honored that loving request and the name of M. Sando Vargas….Jay Vargas’ mother…was added to the Honor Roll.

Of course, it could be one of those countless clone Facebook accounts which are so popular these days, but I couldn’t find anything else on the internet under that name, so….

ADDED: We’ve been contacted by a reader who knows HMCM Gida Mamaril (see Mongo’s comment below) and assures us there was no malicious intent on her part, that she took a picture of a cake that she thought was artfully created, and in our zeal, we mistook the message she was sending. We apologize to HMCM Gida Mamaril for going off half-cocked, but she really should have explained the picture, although the fault is completely mine for not doing my due diligence in this regard. I’ve removed the screenshot and her Facebook link from the link. She has removed the picture.

  1. Instead, she should have pretended to have gotten a Nobel Peace Prize.

    Nobody would have bothered to verify that.

  2. Why? I will never understand this. Why? Whats the point to display medals you could never earn? That’s like a lifetime cook with a CIB! If this individual is still in the NAVY, its Article 134 proceedings at Captains Mast for you!!

  3. Not sure of all the detail, but as a old school Navy Chief, when I see Anchors my ears perk up. I found a link to a BUMED storyinvolving a Gida Mamaril getting frocked to HMCM, hard to believe a Master Chief would be f@@ked up like this. Their are quite a few CPO friends on her page, so I’m sensing more to this. http://www.med.navy.mil/sites/nmcsd/Pages/News/news-20090508.aspx
    Also that picture looks like a cake, at least on my iPad.

  4. Yep, Mondo. And the cake is still inside the box – check out the upper right corner.

  5. Just sent her a Facebook message asking if she’s actually trying to claim a Medal of Honor. Anxiously awaiting her reply.

  6. I’ve had the honor of meeting Col. Vargas and this bitch makes me sick! WHY? Doesn’t she think anyone would check when seeing the Medal of Honor?!

  7. Her picture looks LEGIT in the article about her promotion… Very legit… http://www.med.navy.mil/sites/nmcsd/Pages/News/news-20090508.aspx

    What guys are talking about are the “CPO Anchors” on the Facebook page being “up and down” instead of correctly being in line with the point of the collar and toward the jugular vein.

    “””hard to believe a Master Chief would be f@@ked””” up is exactly what I thought and given the MOH, POW Medal and others she is NOT wearing in the article picture, I believe somebody is trying to screw her as in a subordinate who isn’t a CPO and would get those Anchors wrong…

    I don’t believe she put that page up…

    For ANY Navy CPO, the incorrect Anchor placement would be the same as a Marine in Dress Blues wearing Tennis Shoes… It just would not happen…

  8. Don,
    something doesnt add up and I would hate to see someone get skull f@@ked over a baked good. I sent her a email via NMCI and asked if she knew about this issue and WTF is going on.

  9. For what it’s worth: the MOH ribbon in that photo seems to me to be an obvious photoshop job. And a damned bad one at that.

  10. I think this one deserves to be innocent until proven guilty. I can find no place that she claims to have been awarded the MOH. This is a picture of a cake, not a uniform. Just by raising this question we have the power to cause very real damage to her career.

  11. That rack? WWII Victory, American Defence (Pre Peal Harbor), American Campaign, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign, Occupation medal

  12. I spoke with the Master Chief twice today, she was very upset with some of the comments she got via Facebook. It truly is a cake, done for a Balboa Hospital event, she thought it was well done and took a picture of it. To the best of her knowledge John finn’s rack may have been used as the inspiration for said cake.
    I do not know the Master Chief but you can imagine how fast a 24 year Master Chief piped up and added color commentary when I asked about this. She is shutting down her Facebook account over it. I do not know who sent this picture to the TAH guys, but this is a honest nonissue and needs to be squashed.
    One more validation of why you get PID on your targets before firing.

  13. She is a sister Master Chief and with that comes the ability to forgive … yet never to forget! By the way … I belive it was John Finn’s rack … one which should be presnted on occasion in memory of his actions on Dec 7, 1941 and all that he had done for the CPO Mess over the years. Period!

  14. @8. I also had a chance to meet Col Vargas. What a class act. His citation is definitely worth a read.

    Incidentally, Col Vargas and a number of other MOH recipients have created some awareness videos for PTSD. I think they were well done and worth sharing if anyone has a friend who they may help.
