We usually get about 200 spam comments an hour here (down from over 400/hour in December) and it appears that my filter is tired and it’s sending everyone to the spam folder. So if you had an alert telling you that your comment is being moderated, don’t sweat it. I’m going through the comments manually and sorting yours out until I can get someone to help out fixing stupid Askimet – the spam filter.
Yeah, I woke up this morning to several thousand and I’ve spent most of the morning going through them, so I might be a little slow because I’m quickly losing interest. Don’t stop commenting, just be understanding. It’s also making the site run slowly, so also be patient with us.
Interestingly enough, I also had several hundred in my morning’s inbox too, for my blog. I usually get 6-10. They’re annoying, but the price of business, I suppose.
But I was surprised at the number this morning. I wondered who I pissed off to get that many, especially since a number of them were from the same guy/company.
Perhaps it’s just a coincidence.
Maybe it’s a good excuse to break out the rum earlier? 🙂
The last time I had this happen, I had a friend with a lot of technical experience take a look at the coding and all the comments in my blog. Apparently, I had allowed a comment I wasn’t aware was spam 90 days prior to the spam attacks, that had some malicious code in it set up to attract yet more spam. I was getting several hundred per day. It got so bad, I had to change blogging platforms.
I try to help were I can with the spam. The nice Thing about being in Alaska so I can catch a lot of it before it hits the east coast.
Thanks, Spork, that explains why, by the time I clean out my inbox, the “pending” queue is clean. I appreciate that.
I marked about 70 as spam early this AM. And I find some regularly too, but I leave them for you to delete.
And since I’m on backshift this week, I can take care of the spammers that hang around until last call.
