Marines can wear KIA bracelets (Video added)

I noticed some discussion over the lst few says about whether or not Marines could continue to wear the metal and rubber bands on their arms commemorating their fallen comrades while they’re in uniform. Tman sends us a link to the report that USMC leadershi hass decided they can wear the bracelets;

At issue are KIA bracelets, usually thin rubber or metal bands bearing the names of the fallen in Afghanistan, Iraq or other combat zone. Marine Commandant Gen. James Amos said Tuesday the matter had been discussed and settled when he met last week with other senior Marine generals.

“We are acknowledging the close personal nature of our 10 years at war and the strong bonds of fidelity that Marines have for one another, especially for those fellow Marines who we have lost,” Amos said.

Ususally these discussions don’t end well for the troops, I’m glad this one did. I still wear one that one friend bought me with Tim Martin’s name on it.

  1. Doc, it’s a Marine thing. Admitedly a SNCO and Officer Marine thing, but a Marine thing non the less.

  2. The issue, if I understood it correctly, is that the bracelets were considered a kind “jewelry” which is not authorized for Marines to wear.

  3. I worked with Gen. Amos when he was Col. Amos, CO of MAG 31. He was a gentleman and someone I knew would get his flag someday. He has done the honorable thing and relaxed the Code to allow for this “jewlery”. Although I might not have agreed at the begining to ban these bracelets, I also understood the Marine Corps stand. A big Hooorah for Gen. Amos!

  4. Last I read in MCO P1020.34G they were authorized, but had to be metal in construction and only 1 was authorized along with a wristwatch. The rubber livestrong type bracelets are not authorized. BUT, a MARADMIN (621/11) just came out stating we’re going sleeves down forever, so the regs on jewelry might have changed as well….

  5. No, it’s OK in the Army. I wore one that I picked up in the 70’s. An older brother of a friend served and encouraged me to get one when he returned. I got another one after Desert Storm.

  6. Army Reg 670-1 (and the dozens of ALARACTs since then) allow a bracelet.
