Earthquake?

About a half hour ago, I was sitting on my deck finishing up my lunch break and the elevated structure began wobbling for about four seconds. I came back in and checked my email and apparently the office in DC is evacuating the building. Associated Press says it was a 5.9 magnitude earthquake.

It wasn’t 5.9 here…maybe a .1, But everything is fine at the TAH Corporate Retreat…it didn’t even break any of the liquor supply.

  1. Just talked to my brother in Richmond. Louisa is where they say the epicenter is, which is closer to Richmond than DC and my brother said it really was a non-event in Richmond. He said “yeah, they’re all losing their minds in DC like it’s the second coming, or something”.

  2. 5.9 is pretty serious for the east coast, but I didn’t feel it. North Anna nuclear plant has shut down and declared unusual event, however.

  3. …and you haven’t seen nuthin’ until the caldera under Yellowstone flips. Then it’ll be earthquakes AND volcanoes!

    Shake ‘n’ Bake, anyone?

    BWAAHAAHAAHAA!!!

  4. The building I was in swayed a few inches – very noticeable. No real damage in Tyson’s Corner. The problem now is all the lemmings/sheeple panicking. Cell to cell comm is still overloaded. Text messages can’t be sent. That is the most disturbing part. Text messages take an insignificant amount of bandwidth and for them to be down is surprising. The cell outage is worse than it was after 9/11. I assume it is because the panic is spread out over a multi-state area, thus more cell towers. During 9/11 I was able to use cell to cell voice mail, but now the calls will not even go through. Trying to go from cell to long distance landline was easier during 9/11 than now. Cell to local landline is impossible. I am very disappointed that the comm system has not improved in the last 10 years. Access to the net by smartphones was also ground to a halt.

Accessing twitter 20 minutes later found it to be overwhelmed and not able to search. Although it is back up now.

The biggest problem right now are all the idiots on the roads. Tysons is totally gridlocked onto the secondary and even tertiary roads. You can’t even get out of the parking lot driveway. Looks like I am stuck for a few hours more in the office.

  5. My building in Reston swayed a bit more than I thought normal, even for this magnitude. Luckily, it hit as I was getting ready to leave, so I missed most of the panicked people…only to run into an accident on 66W….probably some idiot posting his earthquake war story on Facebook as he was driving.

Verizon went out for a bit, but is back now. No visible damage to the house, but to be honest, I was just happy that my bike didn’t tip over in the parking lot.

At least if Zombies are next…..I’m ready.

  6. We got a pretty good shaking on Quantico. At first I thought the Marines had set off some of their major ordnance but then it was a sustained shaking and rattling. Minor damage in the area with pictures falling off walls and things falling off shelves. I heard reports of some minor structural damage in a couple buildings. Nothing wrong at my house but several items on the floor instead of on the shelves. Liquor survived but I’ll check to make sure it didn’t receive internal damage. Our complex was shut down for the rest of the day while they check the structure for damage and (I guess) in case of aftershocks.

  7. What you want to be careful of is torn/leaking gas lines. Right after we get hit around here, we start checking on those lines, and for any fires that break out.

  8. I was most concerned about my nuts so I checked them immediately. They’re fine. You know, if black walnuts fall too early, they’re just no good.

  9. Yeah, Sparky, we had bears. I guess they’re looking for food because it’s been so dry this year and berries are pretty sparse in the valley. I can’t believe they climbed my mountain to get to my meager trash. A neighbor reported seeing mountain lions, too.

  10. #15 No, the POTUS is still on vacation. Wait for his next speech promising to turn around the economy.

  11. I felt it too, but then realized it was an A-10 making nightmares for the Taliban again here in Kandahar.

  12. Obama will do a flyover to survey the damage and FEMA will set up trailers for those affected. Look for your checks soon as DC will obviously need diaster relief stimulus.

  13. arby–this is why it’s always good to have a plan beforehand for when TSHTF. Cell systems are so maxxed out in urban areas already, and with EVERYONE jumping on the system, all you’ll have in your hand in the event of another major disaster (natural or man-made) is a battery-powered brick.

Fortunately, there’s enough side roads the flatlanders don’t know that even the overflow from I-95 will be surviveable and I’ll make it home with minimal problems. At that point, I guess it’s my “stockpile” (to parrot the idiot CT cop) that’ll keep the hordes at bay for a while.

  14. “yeah, they’re all losing their minds in DC like it’s the second coming, or something”

DOD contractor here working with a lot of former military.
Most of us were on our way down the stairs before it stopped (I felt two shakes, one short one and a longer one). One guy said his first reaction was to look for the mushroom cloud.

We don’t think earthquakes up here. We apparently think “bomb”. :-/

My wife may be working from home tomorrow as the building engineers at her place in Crystal City wouldn’t let them back in. She said she saw cracks in walls.

  15. “Mr. President. Allah be praised the devils have been struck by a quake and you are safe. This is a great opportunity. May I suggest that you return early and–CLICK–Mr. President? President Obama, are you there sir?”

  16. To think Mrs. MIM and I left California and thought we’d escape this shit! My building in the Reston area was evacuated and we were let go of for the day while the engineers inspected it. There was also a report recently of black bears in neighborhood close to ours.

  17. Spoke to the wife in Richmond and all is well. We don’t get this shit (or hurricanes since I’ve been here) in Louisiana. Laissez les bons temps rouler.

  18. In our office building in DC, it was very loud and strong. Personally, I thought somebody blew up the Metro line underneath our building. I’ll admit, I was scared. The building kicked us out for the day at 1500, the traffic was horrible so we went to eat and then for some retail therapy. At 2030, it took 20 min to drive from the WH to West Falls Church… In my house, nothing was broken although some stuff fell off (no reasonable explanation why some did and why some did not). In my mom’s place in NYC, she had lots of stuff broken…
