“Restrepo” documentary director killed in Libya

From MSNBC:

British photojournalist Tim Hetherington, whose documentary film on the war in Afghanistan was nominated for an Oscar, was killed in the embattled western city of Misrata, his employer, Vanity Fair, confirmed on Wednesday.

Three others working beside him were wounded by fire from a rocket propelled grenade, according to media reports. Two of the photographers — Chris Hondros and Guy Martin — were reportedly in grave condition.

  1. He will be missed. I thought Restrepo was a fair and even job of reporting. He just let the cameras roll and filmed life and death.

  2. Hi Everyone,
It’s been a really hard day. I am grateful that two friends called me to tell me via the phone. I would have hated to have found out over Facebook. I worry about his girlfriend. I hope she was informed before it was put out on Twitter.

I’ve written my own elegy to Tim on my Blog. A Promise To A Friend Still Stands. After crying all day, I remembered a funny story about Tim, and so I wrote Tim Hetherington At Waffle House.

The one thing that struck everyone about him is his gentleness. He was one of the rare persons who combined bravery, gentleness and the ability to get a long with a broad cross section of people.

Tim had a knack for finding the truth of a given situation, and he found and valued the humanity of each person. We in the military community have been blessed by having him find our story and show it. He did a lot for all of us.
    I’m just blessed and grateful.

  3. Ditto Old Soldier54. His pictures in the book WAR and the film RESTREPRO were fantastic. Rest in Peace Tim. Many troopers on the other side taking care of you now.

    Honor and Courage

  4. I meat him when he came here to WVU. Great guy, and despite his personal beliefs, really open and honest about what he found in Kerengol (spelling?). I actually think that this is a tragic loss. Most newsies I wouldn’t bat an eyelash at, but this guy got it, and that’s the real shame, cuz there are very few who will get off their fat duffs to go and see.

  5. There aren’t too many journalists who put accuracy before agenda so this is a real loss. RIP.
