In short: a relative of mine became mortally ill, but the hospital would not treat him due to an “Advance Health Care Directive” he had signed long ago saying he did not want doctors to “artificially prolong” his life in the case of serious illness. I really need to write a full post in response, as this hits home on several levels. I had very different experiences with hospice care for my mother and father; and, I have not only signed my end-of-life directives, I’ve also taken the time to discuss them at length with the people who will be involved. Short version is, if there is no hope of anything approaching normal life, let me go. If there is a chance, I’ll fight — I’ve fought before and will do so again.
Zombie, my thoughts and prayers are out to you and your family on this. It was a bad situation, and I am sorry you are having to deal with it. It is never easy.
