WWII Vet victim of elder abuse

YankeeMom sent us this link to an article about 93-year-old Arnold “Max” Bauer, a Pearl Harbor survivor who was found to be living in squalor in his El Cajon, CA home;

Arnold Bauer’s caregiver, Milagros Angeles, has pleaded not guilty to felony elder abuse and false imprisonment. Authorities believe Angeles stole thousands of dollars from Bauer.

Le Chevalier says Angeles had told her Bauer was fine and eating well.

Sheriff’s elder abuse investigators found Bauer disoriented in a house full of rotting trash last week.

According to the video at the link, several people have offered to clean Bauer’s house and yard for him, but nothing can be done because Bauer’s daughter, in Santa Barbara hasn’t responded to offers to help. I’m beginning to think that this abuse wasn’t the whole story. I’m sure the daughter is fairly old herself, but calls to the care-giver once-a-month isn’t exactly checking in on her father. If she’s not willing or capable to be a daughter, she ought to give power of attorney to someone else.

Anyway, Max is being treated for prostate cancer at the local VA, and I’m sure he’d like to know that there are people out here who care about him, so YankeeMom sends along his mailing address if you want to send him a card;

  1. Card written, addressed, stamped and ready to be put in the drop box at the post office tomorrow.

  2. I had the honor of being a caregiver to a 91 year old WWII veteran for some time. I can’t imagine this poor man’s predicament at the hands of this “person”. I hope she’s jailed.

  3. I am horrified at this all the way around. The Elderly dont have a whole lot of choices in Cali if you ask me. Before my mom passed away, I tried for MONTHS & MONTHS to find something suitable for her in her price range..and there was NOTHING. Not all the elderly are set up well financially or have spouses that were in the military…anyway, she lived with us til she passed and that was the best anyway. I feel sorry for this man and am sending a card in the morning.

  4. His daughter’s name is Stephanie Le Chevalier. She last lived in Santa Barbara. Her only contact with the San Diego Sheriff’s Department has been through a written statement. Since she has power of attorney, we cannot get in to clean Max’s home. She refuses to come forward to be interviewed by the Sheriff’s Department. It is really nice of you to keep this out there, we need to find her.
    Max is doing well, he is being well loved and cared for by the VA and friends. Thanks.

  5. I’m sending him two: A pretty, colorful Thank You card and a post card with a collage of California’s Red Woods, Yosemite, Monterrey coastline, Lake Tahoe and the Sierra’s… doubtful I’d have grown up surrounded by such beauty had the Navy not brought my Grandfather, a Guadalcanal vet and retired HMC, to settle in California… and doubtful I’d have been free to simply stroll through such beauty were it not for their sacrifices. Not sure what the coastline of my native state would look like now had we not entered WWII.

  6. Card on the way. God Bless him and those who have rescued him and are giving him the respect and care he DESERVES.

    I DARE that daughter of his to get within arms distance of me.
