This is a free media?

This is a congressman? Here’s a video I picked up from Little Green Footballs on Democrat Congressman Keith Ellison speaking to the National Conference for Media Reform.

[youtube dpdafLcxL0Y nolink]

Charles sums up the 17 minute video;

Ellison talks about how Ronald Reagan made him sick—but not as sick as George W. Bush makes him. (Applause.)

He calls America an “imperial power.” Then he suggests that the country should get rid of “hate radio” and Fox News.

But that’s not all. He claims that journalists and lawyers are the only people who defend the Constitution because they’re the only occupations mentioned in Bill of Rights. I don’t remember lawyers being mentioned in the Bill of Rights. He singles out a free media’s most dangerous enemy – Rupert Murdoch. The only people who are afraid of Rupert Murdoch are people who are afraid to have their malfeasance exposed.

He complains that media conglomerates control the news. Bill Moyers who spoke the following day did, as well;

…the newspaper industry is in the middle of the most momentous change in its three hundred year history – a change that is diminishing the amount of real news available to the consumer. A generation of relentless corporatization is now culminating in a furious, unprecedented blitz of buying, selling and consolidating of newspapers, from the mightiest dailies to the humblest weeklies. It is a world where “small hometown dailies in particular are being bought and sold like hog futures. Where chains, once content to grow one property at a time, now devour other chains whole. Where they are effectively ceding whole regions of the country to one another, further minimizing competition. Where money is pouring into the business from interests with little knowledge and even less concern about the special obligations newspapers have to democracy.” They go on to describe the toll that the never-ending drive for profits is taking on the news.

It’s people like Bill Moyers who doomed the media. They took over the media, as Ellison points out in 1964 and Conservatives couldn’t get a word in edgewise. For years, all we had was PBS’ Firing Line, The National Review and Commentary magazines. Folks got tired of the spin (before we knew that spin was the word) which gave rise to talk radio, more weeklies and finally, Fox News (who, despite the Leftist scripts, is more balanced than Right which makes them seem Right by comparison). What the Left can’t wrap their tiny brains around is that if Americans rejected the new media sources, they’d go out of business. Well, except The Washington Times which hemorrhages cash.

Honestly, I don’t see how Ellison, a congressman, can find the nerve to say that he supports a free media in one breath, and then in the next condemn a news organization by name in the next. And then this organization applauds Ellison like they’re insane. From their own About page;

Free Press is a national, nonpartisan organization working to reform the media. Through education, organizing and advocacy, we promote diverse and independent media ownership, strong public media, and universal access to communications.

Nonpartisan enough to cheer on Ellison who would shut down legal news organizations because they oppose him ideologically. I ought to mention his childish behavior in the beginning of the video, but the words that follow are so much more childish.

  1. This was a propoganda event. How to stiffle free speeech was their agenda. But they have to put lipstick on this pig so the Nazi in the mirror doesn’t harm their self-esteem.

  2. I hate Fox News.

However, I don’t want to shut it down, because I believe in anyone’s right to deliberately condemn themselves to ignorance.

I will never let Fox News live down their news piece: “Space Shuttle Travelling at Six Times Speed of Light”.

My main problem with Fox News is they never, ever ,make retractions. Ever. Even when the news piece is as blindly and factually wrong as that.

I remember watching and wondering how the hell Faster Than Light Travel had managed to be introduced without anyone knowing about it-or anyone catching that error.

  3. Oh yeah? I hate the New York Times, and the NBC-ABC-CBS-PBS-MSNBC conglomerate not just for their visceral pro-Islamic attacks against America, but their refusal to redact any of it.

  4. BTW: Here’s a run down of what makes Ellison tick, from my blog:

Ellison’s track record speaks for itself: Nation of Islam membership, accepting thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from the terrorist front CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations), and comparing the 11 September attacks and the Bush administration to a Reichtag fire during a meeting with “Atheists for Human Rights”.

During that meeting Ellison said: “It’s almost like the Reichstag fire, kind of reminds me of that. After the Reichstag was burned, they blamed the Communists for it, and it put the leader of that country in a position where he could basically have authority to do whatever he wanted.”

As for ‘understanding Islam’; 11 September, 2001 and the subsequent wholesale slaughter of thousands of innocent people in the name of “Allah” taught me everything I need to know.

This is the same Muslim who is vehemently opposed to our war against his radical Islamist brethren. This is the same bin Ladin mouthpiece who was elected thanks to the Somali Muslim population in his district, who shouted “Allahu akbar” when he won.

When he took the oath of office, he swore allegiance on a KORAN. You can’t get much more Islamofascist than that. Minnesota once had a reputation for voting the socialist ticket.
Guess that wasn’t quite extreme enough, eh?

  5. Fee,

Haven’t had a min to listen to the vid above but unless I missed a written reference above, always a possibility, the Koran refs were to Ellison, not Obama.

Snopes (fun but usually pretty balanced) says of Ellison and the koran that the truth of the searing in story is mixed as here:

    http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/ellison.asp

  6. GI JANE,

I maintain that the use of the koran by ELLISON in the ceremonial swearing in photos was intended as an intentional thumb in Jefferson’s eye.

Kind of like “The kafir enemy owned “the holy koran” for info about Barbary Pirates ( maybeso ??? ) and now WE use it in YOUR congressional ceremony. WE (and the Barbary Pirates) WIN !!!!! “

  7. I will never let Fox News live down their news piece: “Space Shuttle Travelling at Six Times Speed of Light”.

I will never let Winter Soldiers – past and present – continue to present allegations as truth.

Smearing the reputation of two generations of American soldiers makes this gaffe by Fox News quite trivial in my opinion.

  8. The old guard of journalists are seeing their demise and they will not go quietly into that good night. They can’t print or broadcast anything they like and swear it’s the truth because we have the internet, and fact checkers and people like Raoul, Jonn, Michelle, Skye, and 1,000’s of others who take the time to research and investigate.
    The left can’t stand it.
    BTW, I LOVE FOXNEWS!!!!!!!!

  9. Fair and balanced Fox .O’Reilly has a great show.Hannity is a right wing goon without credibility.Greta shouldn’t have a job.Definately some smart good looking blondes.Understand Murdoch is going to endorse Obama. That could be interesting.

  10. Incidently, Lobbyists are indirectly mentioned in the Bill of rights under “petition for redress of grievances.” So we rock.

Still hate Fox news. They lost me over all tabloid crap with the chick in aruba, the little girl killed in Europe and the Cop that killed his wive(s).

Jonn wrote: You and I have discussed before how fickle blog readers are – how sometimes the stupidest things we write get the most traffic. I’m sure the news organizations feel the same way. Sometimes we just have to do the fluff to get the numbers up. Believe me, I’m with you, I’m just saying that I know why they do it.

  11. NavyOne: Perhaps I should have said: “They don’t broadcast any of the retractions”. My mistake.

And yeah, I guess TSO also hit it. They’re just not very dignified.

Skye: How do you define truth? Who are you to say that what they say they saw wasn’t what they said? Just because you believe none of it is happening?

  12. Hey, ellison. You and me. In the street, stipped to the waist, no holds barred. I win, you shut up and go home. You win. That ain’t gonna happen. 5 feet, 3 inches, 140 pounds.
consider the gauntlet thrown at your feet.

  13. Jonn GOOD MORNING It appears you’ve deleted Fee totally from a number of sites including ironically enough “This is a free media” Is he too tough for you? What’s up?

Jonn wrote: Wanna join him? I have a paying job and I don’t have time for playing games with trolls.

  14. Jonn He’s probably the smartest guy you or Cob ever had on your sites.Sorry you couldn’t handle him.You can throw me off like Cob did and you can all hug and kiss each other til Nov.I’ll still buy you,cob or gramps a cold one if youre in San Clemente.Semper Fi Richard

  15. Wheeler speaks: Greta shouldn’t have a job

I don’t know man, even I think that Democrats should be allowed to work, and that’s what she is. IMO the one that should be out of a job is Geraldo.

  16. Gramps I agree he tried to pimp Hillary over Obama(looking for debunked M.O.tape) and is a big supporter of McCain.P.S.Greta is strong Repub.and a 3 iron-looks good from 170 yards.

  17. I don’t limit my news sourcing to any one MSM source, but dig around to see if I can find the nugget of truth in the dump truck load of manure they spew. Of Fox news… I agree that they are sometimes too “tabloid” with some news items. However, they consistantly present both sides of a debate and I think their political coverage is really the fairest of all the cable news networks with MSNBC coming in dead last.

  18. Wheeler speaks: P.S.Greta is strong Repub

I think you’re wrong Richard. Even her sister ran for I think the U S Senate as a Democrat. Greta was employed by CNN for about 10 years, so I doubt very seriously that she’s a STRONG Republican as you say.

  19. Ray, no argument on that, but it seems everytime of late I have turned on FoxNews of late I am seeing things I read about on the ‘net 72 hours earlier. Not like I have a great antipathy for the people of fox news in particular (Although Shep Smiths girl eyes kinda freak me out) I just pretty much hate all TV like that nowadays. Too much TMZ in the “news.”

I do however watch their election returns, because it’s the only one not entirely bogged down with people talking out their….

  20. As far as fair and balanced I’d rank MSMBC AND FOX tied for dead last though coming from opposite ideologies.Think O’Reilly, though clearly Consevative,is smart and tough on everyone.
