As former EP-3 aircrew, had to laugh at the Per Diem joke.
There was a guy in the VP community who shall remain nameless. Let’s call him PO Smith. Because of him, his crewmates said that a new time measurement was discovered. Faster than a nanosecond. They called it the “Smithnon”.
It was the amount of time needed from the moment the tires touched the runway to determine the local per diem rate. This guy would deploy with cases of cheap tuna fish so that he didn’t have to “waste” per diem money on food. That’s all he ate.
Do we know him? 🤔
No. I actually never met the guy, but a guy I flew with knew him at another squadron.
