Federal judge orders the Trump administration to fund SNAP

Jack McConnell, U.S. District Judge in Rhode Island, issued an order requiring the Trump administration to fully fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) by Friday. McConnell argued that SNAP recipients have gone too long without these benefits and addressed the fact that they’re hungry as this process is playing out. The judge defined irreparable harm in terms of people going hungry, of overburdened food pantries, and of needless suffering.

From Fox News:

“People have gone without for too long,” U.S. District Judge Jack McConnell said in court Thursday.

He scolded the Trump administration for failing to comply with the order he issued last week, which required the U.S. Department of Agriculture to fund the SNAP benefits programs before its funds were slated to lapse on Nov. 1, marking the first time in the program’s 60-year history that its payments were halted.

The judge also said Trump officials failed to address a known funding distribution problem that could cause SNAP payments to be delayed for weeks or months in some states. He ordered the USDA to tap other contingency funds as needed.

“It’s likely that SNAP recipients are hungry as we sit here,” McConnell said Thursday.

Trump administration officials said in a court filing this week that they would pay just 65% of the roughly $9 billion owed to fund the SNAP program for November, prompting the judge to update his order and give the administration just 24 hours to comply.

“The evidence shows that people will go hungry, food pantries will be overburdened, and needless suffering will occur,” McConnell said. “That’s what irreparable harm here means.”

    1. SHE’S SO FAT, the last time she wore yellow, children climbed on her thinking she was a school bus!

    2. The thing about SNAP is it has almost no restrictions from what I gather. When I was working my way through my undergrad studies, we used WIC with my son. I’d put money into the system since I was 12, so at 36 it was time get something out of it. Multiple times we had to return items for because they weren’t covered. SNAP should be the same except the drink companies and salty snack providers and their lobbyists will “make donations” to politicians so that NEVER happens.

  1. She cannot go swimming in saltwater, the odds of her getting harpooned are too high!

  2. Saw a meme claiming the average weight of a woman who buys her groceries at 149 pounds… and of the average female SNAP recipient at 211 pounds. Wonder how factual that is?

    1. I don’t know about averages, but I do know of some folks with thyroid and other problems that prevent them from losing weight.
They do not over-eat. For some the weight problems prevent them from doing many jobs – not from laziness but from medical issues.

We must be careful to not paint all SNAP recipients with the same brush.

      1. nope don’t care. not making fun of fat people we are making fun of fat parasites. I know people with thyroid problems and they work every day and buy their own groceries.

        1. And I know some in both groups – those who can and do, and those who cannot and wish they could.

And I’ve known those in both categories to get told off by those who think “they know” that “if only”

      1. Back in my lawer days, I learned early on in my appearances before federal judges that most of them think they can do anything they want cuz they ultimately are only answerable to the Courts of Appeal and the Supreme Court. They really do think they are the lords of their respective districts.

  3. With what money, though?? I heard that the money the admin has on hand isn’t enough to even fund a month.

              1. I won’t pay that much for a real beer, but if he can get suckers his supporters to pay that much for swill, more power to him.

          1. I.e., “If ya’ll are rich, own a business or just have a job in NYC, please give generously so we know who you are and stay on our good side.”

    1. maybe these “large and in charge” judges can start donating their salaries. maybe tithe 10% of their playoffs for the cause. oh wait that’s their money…

    2. You just snap your fingers and money appears! Worked for Joe Biden. Crank up the printing presses!

  4. Dear DISTRICT Judgey-wudgey,
are you trying to tell the FedGov CHIEF EXECUTIVE how to do his business?
    STAY IN YOUR LANE!

And while you’re in the “telling everyone else how to do their business”, tell them WHERE they’ll get the $$$$$$$, since it’s the DILDOCRATS who are holding up the CR/budget.

  5. Hey Judge, maybe you forgot that the Executive Branch doesn’t control the purse…CONGRESS does.

    1. But the low info voters won’t research that, and blame Trump because they read about it on the internet, so it has to be true.

  6. what evidence? are their a bunch of fat lazy parasites lying in the streets, starved to death after a couple days with no free food. if this “judge” hadn’t said something,I would have never known that the president worked for him. hmm… the hangings can start at any time, after a fair trial of course…

    1. You forgot the air quotes around fair. Don’t worry, I put them in for you on the version I read.

  7. If i was Trump, I would have paid SNAP at the outset, along with healthy dose of messaging that I was paying it despite the efforts of the DEMs to prevent it. Just like his efforts with military pay. Should SNAP be reformed? Most definitely. Is it full if scammers? Absolutely. But it was going to be paid anyway.

This was a multi-billion dollar missed opportunity to stick this on the DEM leadership. Blanket the airwaves. “Breaking: Trump has approved immediate release of funds to SNAP beneficiaries despite democratic shut down. Dial 1-800-GET-SNAP for your instructions on how to process payment.”

Then do a deep data dive on recipients and their legal status and launch ICE about a month later.

  8. Priorities seem to be skewed by this judge.

Do we want to see people working actually get paid for doing their jobs still? (Looking at those air traffic controllers)
    OR
Do we fund the parasite class? (Understand not everyone on SNAP is like that but we can be adults and admit we know a fair number are)

            1. Just like the “Affordable Care Act”. Have you noticed the MSM no longer calls it “Obamacare”?

  9. The Judge does not have the authority for such an order. Only Congress can give POTUS spending authority.
