The Hamas leadership knew that their actions would lead to an overwhelming response from Israel, leading to the total obliteration of the Palestinian territory. In fact, that is what they wanted. Because that would lead to hundreds of billions of dollars in foreign aid, primarily from America, that they could steal to finance their lifestyles as the rule the Palestinian people from 1000 miles away in Qatar.
