Mexican Navy tall ship collides with Brooklyn Bridge – Two sailors dead

Mexican Navy tall ship, Cuauhtémoc, struck the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday evening, killing two onboard and injuring nearly 20 sailors. None of the sailors fell into the water. Officials suspect that a mechanical issue may have caused the ship to collide with the bridge. The investigation is ongoing.

From Fox News:

Video of the crash from the Brooklyn side of the East River shows the 150-foot-tall Mexican Navy training ship’s three masts snapping after hitting the bridge. Officials said early indications suggest a mechanical issue may have caused the ship to veer off course and collide with the bridge, but the incident remains under investigation.

Footage also shows sailors hanging from the rigging ropes on the damaged masts, but none of them fell into the water.

“We saw someone dangling, and I couldn’t tell if it was just blurry or my eyes, and we were able to zoom in on our phone and there was someone dangling from the harness from the top for at least 15 minutes before they were able to rescue them,” eyewitness Lily Katz told The Associated Press.

Another witness, Nick Corso, had his phone out to capture the backdrop of the ship and the bridge against a sunset when he heard what sounded like the loud snapping of a “big twig.”

People around Corso began running and “pandemonium” ensued aboard the ship, he said. He later noticed a handful of people dangling from a mast.

“I didn’t know what to think, I was like, is this a movie?” he said.

The bridge did not sustain any damage from the collision.

“We are praying for everyone on board and their families and are grateful to our first responders who quickly jumped into action, ensuring this accident wasn’t much worse,” Adams said at a news conference on Saturday night.

  1. More questions than answers. Time will tell. Sympathies to the families of the victims who died and swift recovery for those injured.

  2. Sad, pray for a speedy recovery of the injured.

Honestly looks like it would be an awesome adventure to sail that ship around as a kid. But sailing is never risk free or guaranteed safe.

    1. Shocked, that post was a straight up lie. The only thing DOGE has done with the Coast Guard is get rid of a non working logistics system. Certainly zero reduction in personnel. I’m not to judge but if I were, Schumer would be going straight to hell when he gives up the ghost for all the lies over the years.

      1. The Coast Guard has already repudiated Cucky Schemer’s lies about this accident. There was a total loss of steering power on the ship. That was the cause of this incident.

    2. If you watch Sal/What’s Up with Shipping vid, you’ll see the ship was under its own power and going in reverse when the currents, some wind, and I’ll say poor seamanship caused the collision. Chucking standing on the bodies of 2 dead sailors is the typical scumbag behavior for a fucking scumbag like Chuck. How about Bidens mentally and physical decline that you knowing covered up and lied about for years? He’s trying to distract the public from his complicity in Biden Regime Farce.

      1. Just because she was under power does not mean the helm was under control. I’ll wait for the investigation to complete before opining.

        1. Second hand or worse information I’ve heard is that the ship was NOT under power and was drifting downstream. I have no clue if that is true but it sounds very unlikely.

        2. I’ll agree with that, but I think we can agree that DOGE had zilch to do with it.

    3. Let me be the first to say, Chuck Shumer is a cock sucker.

(I know I’m not the first, but hey, it needed saying…again.)

  3. What I am reading was that the steering failed when they were too close to the bridge… as windjammers go, she’s relatively young, less than 50 years old. One of the prettiest afloat, too. I suspect there will be a commanding captain’s position open in the Mexican Navy shortly.

    1. And I see Chuckie Schumer already is trying to blame DOGE and Coast Guard budget cuts…nothing more fun for a Democrat than dancing in the blood of innocent victims to make an unrelated political point. We’ve seen it for 30 years with school shootings – bet Chuckie salivated at doing it with a clipper ship. Nothing and nobody will ever equal that opportunity.

  4. I always use the lane without a canopy when using the
drive thru at the bank and McDonalds as well because of the
    antennas on the truck cab.
    Just sayin…

  5. After some reflection, I apologize for the joke I made yesterday in regards to this incident. It was wrong of me.

  6. I mean, I hate that 2 people died but…..

Well, you know how many of us cope…

  7. Can’t swear to the matter but some sources say the maximum clearance under the Brooklyn Bridge is 127′.

With some inspection and reengineering, my guess is that it’s cheaper to modify the Mexican boat into a low rider with shorter masts and rigging than it would be to raise the bridge.

Since this is sort of an international incident and John Fonda-Kerry is a naval expert as well as self ordained ambassador, it seems appropriate for John “Swift Boat” Kerry to surrender to someone, somewhere, and to bad-mouth sailors.

    1. This incident will be seared, seared into his brain. The ship hit the bridge in a manner reminiscent of Jingus Kahn.

  8. Gotta wonder if a Coast Guard drug interdiction has been keeping an eye of the situation. Ship was sitting high in the water, could have been offloading for thousands of miles along the way were looking for a place to scuttle the rig.

    1. Homeboys got lost and wound up headed up the East River.

Fairly sure the local dealers’ are fucking thrilled.

      1. Learned my lesson about the East River back in the late 80s. If the tide is not running in your favor, on a sailboat, you ain’t getting there until it is.

It is not cheap to get a slip or tie up, even for an hour.

        Know before you go.

        1. All of my river experience is in the rocky mountains. We don’t worry about tides, just spring runoff.

  9. Patient count 3 Red Triage tags
    11 Yellow ” ”
    9 Green ” ”

    • Red tags – (immediate) are used to label those who cannot survive without immediate treatment but who have a chance of survival.
    • Yellow tags – (observation) for those who require observation (and possible later re-triage). Their condition is stable for the moment and, they are not in immediate danger of death. These victims will still need hospital care and would be treated immediately under normal circumstances.
    • Green tags – (wait) are reserved for the “walking wounded” who will need medical care at some point, after more critical injuries have been treated.

Triage patient tag info from FDNY Field Com. Which I received from IPN texts.(incident Paging Network)
