US Naval Academy ends affirmative action in admissions

By Brian Witte, The Associated Press

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The U.S. Naval Academy will no longer consider race, ethnicity or sex as a factor for admission to the service institution, a response to an executive order by President Donald Trump, according to federal court documents made public Friday.

The change in policy was made in February by Vice Adm. Yvette Davids, the academy’s superintendent, in response to an executive order issued by President Donald Trump in January, according to a court filing by the U.S. Justice Department in the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

The president’s order on Jan. 27 said that “every element of the Armed Forces should operate free from any preference based on race or sex.” It also directed the secretary of defense to conduct an internal review with respect to all “activities designed to promote a race- or sex-based preferences system,” including reviews at the service academies.

“Under revised internal guidance issued by the Superintendent on Feb. 14, 2025, neither race, ethnicity, nor sex can be considered as a factor for admission at any point during the admissions process, including qualification and acceptance,” according to the court filing made public Friday.

Military Times

This does not sit well with Maryland’s political overlords. Congressional Representative Sarah Elfreth- who serves on the Academy’s Board of Visitors- criticized the change stating “This disastrous decision will have negative implications on our military’s recruitment and retention for decades to come.”

She trots out the tired old trope of DEI being crucial for mission readiness and national security, and how its removal will harm recruiting.

She fails to mention exactly how this dire prognosis will come to pass, and why the military is currently enjoying a surge in recruitment. Surprised? Me neither.

  1. She’s just another sheep repeating the Cult’s Mantra ‘Diversity is our strength’ like some zombie in a Saturday nickelodeon horror.
I’d like for her to explain how merit based activities hurt the military by having the best & brightest leading the way. We’ve already seen her recruiting woes being affected getting shot-to-hell.

    1. Congressional Representative Sarah Elfreth- who serves on the Academy’s Board of Visitors- criticized the change stating “This disastrous decision will have negative implications on our military’s recruitment and retention for Communist indoctrination for decades to come.””

I believe this is what she really means.

  2. I’d love for Ms. Elfreth to cite specific examples of how DEI is “crucial for mission readiness and national security.” Simply saying that it does, doesn’t make it so.

      1. The only training and discipline I might need is to not gouge my own eyes out seeing that directly in front of me.

        1. Don’t believe that there’s enough bleach for our eyes/brain to erase THAT picture…

  3. How would a congress critter, of the female persuasion that never wore any uniform, have a clue about what readiness and war fighting is about?

    1. She has probably tried to cross the Bay Bridge, during the summer, more than once.

  4. DEI is just the new racism, nothing more, nothing less. Maryland’s political overlords can suck a fat baby’s ass.

  5. They are absolutely correct that a lack of diversity will hinder success and they have the proof. Or, they are the proof.

They shutdown, silenced, marginalized and cancelled anyone who didn’t engage in their single-minded hate for one man and for anyone who supported him or questioned their agenda. Now, the Democrat party is on life support, is failing, and there is little hope of survival. Because of lack of diverse thought, perspective or opinion.

  6. I have an AR lower receiver that’s stamped “Multi-Caliber”.

That’s all the diversity I need.

  7. “This disastrous decision will have negative implications on our military’s recruitment and retention for decades to come.”

Yup, roll out the, “removing our good idea fairy approved initiative will have negative implications” canard.

What President Donald Trump should tell her:

  8. So where do government set asides in the procurement process land? Will President Trump’s ban on DEI negatively impact the cash flow to proud but humble women owned businesses? If we no longer qualify as a small woman owned businesses, can our company be assigned under the economically disadvantaged zone, because there sure as hell no money flowing into glove box of the 1980’s vintage Jaguar that is currently the world corporate headquarters for your one stop shop when it comes to outdated and overpriced Red Hat software.

  9. If DEI is a force multiplier in the military, civil service and commercial businesses, why isn’t it embraced in professional sports? It seems some demographics are over represented based on their population in America, so when do we get see 4’ 8” 60 year old Asian women playing defense in the NFL, or transgender athletes in the WNBA?
