The fall of Australia has been really sad. I used to argue that the British colonial system was superior to the other European colonial powers, as the British former colonies were far more successful than the French, Dutch, Spaniard, and Portuguese ex-colonies.
I guess it doesn’t matter anymore. Europe has ran its course.
The bayonet one reminds me of something I personally saw in Basic:
Trainee: If the bayonet gets stuck I I just blow it free with a bullet?
Drill Sergeant: If you let the enemy get within bayonet distance when you HAVE a bullet left, you’re a f**king idiot!
A slightly different version from 1970:
Drill Sergeant:
“If your bayonet gets stuck in his ribs, fire off a round and the recoil will extract it.”
Trainee:
“If I have a round to fire off, there ain’t gonna be no bayonet fighting.”
Heard the same from my father who went through basic in 1947.
So I’m not allowed to go Christmas caroling at the mental asylum anymore.
Seems that, “Do you hear what I hear?” was an insensitive song choice.
