Space Force Wants Unique Boot Camp for Guardians

ORLANDO, Fla.—Space Force leaders are looking at how they can create a distinct Basic Military Training program for Guardian recruits, and eyeing new locations for the BMT enterprise.

Chief of Space Operations Gen. B. Chance Saltzman listed the idea among things he wants to accomplish in 2025 during the Spacepower Conference here this week. He also hinted at other personnel changes ahead.

“We’ve got to get the BMT right-sized and in the right location,” Saltzman said in a question and answer session. Guardians and Airmen both go through BMT at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas. They have done so since October 2020, Saltzaman said, because BMT “requires a lot of overhead” and USSF leaders wanted to move fast to build out their ranks.

The Space Force has gradually introduced its own Space Force-specific wrinkles to BMT. The first Guardian training instructor graduated from the Military Training Instructor Course in 2021, and the following spring, the first all-Guardian class inaugurated a new space-focused curriculum.

Splitting Guardian BMT off entirely would therefore be “a natural part of the evolution,” Saltzman later told Air & Space Forces Magazine during a media roundtable. “At some point you say, ‘Well, we’ve got to train and educate our own people.’”

Just what this new Space Force BMT will look like—and where it might be based—are still to be determined.

I’d recommend Waukegan Illinois, where aspiring Guardians can also don just about every clothing item issued to march to the chow hall in Chicago winters. They’ll have to put in a golf course though.

          1. Green Thumb.
            Bingo.
I was there, just a few weeks ago. Lots of vacant land to build out between Merritt Island and Cape Canaveral.

            That said, at Lackland AFB,
with all the new replacement buildings, demolitions, and now vacant plots scattered around the base, there is no reason that Lackland can’t be a permanent BMTS location for both USAF and USSF, with separate admin and training buildings, and green bean cafa-gyma-dorms.

        1. I too had a thought… hello Mr. Google

“Starfleet Academy is the collective name of Starfleet’s training facilities located in San Francisco, Earth. It was officially established in 2161, with the main grounds located in Marin County. To the southwest of the academy is the Golden Gate Bridge (rebuilt after the devastating Breen attack of 2375), whilst to the south across the strait lies Starfleet Headquarters, the Presidio, and downtown San Francisco.”

I mean, come on they’re already gonna tease the shit out of Space Force, I thought of doing this just to engender themselves with the fictional timeline…..

(Not me, the space force cadets….. or the Navy.)

          1. AHEM….

Original post (with time stamp) below. Jus’ sayin

    1. My son went through Navy Basic Training during COVID, and they spent the first 2 weeks for quarantine at Ft. McCoy near the city of Tomah, WI. Its 230 miles North of Great lakes off I-94 near Bum-Fuck-Egypt according to my boy.

      1. Pretty much. Don’t eat at the Chinese place across from Taste of Chicago in Sparta. Go to the one in Tomah. Although Sparta does have a kick-ass Ramen (as in real Asian ramen, not 4/$1 ramen) restaurant. Ain’t diddley immediately near post.

        1. In La Crosse I recommend: (not in order)

          The Freight House
          Digger’s Sting
          Pickerman’s Sandwich Shop

There’s one more on the River, but I can’t remember the name. River view, Water Front, something like that. It is very expensive though.

      2. I was at Ft McCoy this summer for a new ID. And it is right next to Bum-Fuck-Egypt. Good place to send The Space Force for Training.

      3. He’s not wrong, but just south of there is the Wisconsin Dells and just North is La Crosse WI and that is an awesome little gem of a town. I have to go to FT McCoy a few times per year, and it’s actually one of my favorite places to go.

However, I am not a Navy recruit in quarantine! So there’s that!

        1. Wisconsin Dells is water park heaven. They also have the finest supper club in all of Wisconsin. It’s only open in summer, “Ishnala”
Rated number one in Wisconsin. I go there at least 4 times every summer. It’s an hour from Ft McCoy.

            1. Especially if you love the circus. (The real one, not the amateur one in D.C.) Baraboo is the home of the Ringling Bros. Circus Museum. My baby sister lives in Lodi, and every time I go to visit, I make the trek around Lake Wisconsin to visit Baraboo and the Circus Museum.

              1. It’s also supposed to be one of the most haunted cities in The country (state?). There is a form of a man that was cut into the ground by the local Indian tribe. The city or county cut a road across it and supposedly opened a cure. I saw this story in the history channel!

        1. Ah, so it’s been done already. Since 1999. So, if we didn’t have a Space Force then, why do we need one now?

          (Sarcasm)

    2. Why not Minot? Send them for training in the winter so as to get used to temperatures in space. Minot would probably be considered south Florida in the winter after that.

  1. All this talk don’t mean nothing. We know that it will end up in SanFran @ the Old Fort Baker Location.

  2. Well I understand there is some spare land area in the vicinity of Ft Polk. If not there then there is a whole lot of land open in the area of Furnace Creek NV.

    1. Since the default is always “Infantry”, send -everyone- to 11B OSUT, then off to learn whatever they will do.

  3. Since the Marine Corps eliminated the Fourth Recruit Training Battalion (the battalion that was exclusively women), there might be some facilities readily available at Parris Island.

        1. Dropping an anvil from orbit would wreck a bunker or silo.

Scattering 100 pounds of sand in front of a missile could wreck it.

The hardest part of exoatmospheric combat is not killing things. It is doing so without making low earth orbit useless for a century, and geosynch useless for millennia.

          1. No greater area denial weapon in orbit than simply dumping our earthbound trash there.

            Would an anvil survive re-entry?

              1. Check the bits of Columbia recovered, and various Soviet thudniks.

There was a proposal to orbit satellites loaded with what amount to “long rod penetrator” tank projectiles, with a guidance package, as a silo-buster. 30-50 pounds of steel, tungsten, or DU. Each has advantages. DU is most expensive, but also most refractory, self sharpening when the point shatters, and the bits spontaneously combust vigorously.

Steel was the cheap mass-effect option. Just bigass flying crowbars.

                1. Rods o’ God would’ve kicked ass. A hunk of steel hitting at such velocities is more destructive than its weight in C4 alone.

  4. I went through Tech School, for Aircrew Life Support, at Chanute AFB, ILL in Feb 86-Apr 86.

My Gawd was it cold marching to school in that damn near blizzard weather. Even thought I had lived in Germany for 3 years just prior to going there.

While at Lackland AFB, TX for Basic Jan 86-Feb 86 it got so hot right before graduation that they didn’t march us for a few days. I literally went from the Oven to Freezer in a matter of days.

      1. Saw that while at Norton in the winter. 75 or so during the day, low to mid 30s at night. So much for California dreaming.

  5. I’m curious to know what the Space Force specific “wrinkles” are in BMT that necessitates another separate training facility (other than someone needing a kingdom).

    1. classes on making coffee for field grade officers? how to properly take all the stuff you just printed out and immediately shred it? classes on picking the correct driver for hole 3 at the Nellis golf course?

      1. Well Space Force should have cool shit like space walking, driver’s ed for the lunar rover, CBT for space herpe avoidance…

    1. Oh, with the hell of war he’s come to grips,
      Policing-up the filter-tips.
It makes a fellow proud to be a soldier!
      –Tom Lehrer

  6. My vote for a new Space Force BMT site is to re-open the old Fort Benjamin Harrison at Naptown that was closed down as part of the BRAC in 1991. After all, at one time, (1948-50?) there was an Air Force presence there.

    1. FT McLellan is a great choice. Especially if they move the SF Command to Huntsville AL. There is a huge NASA presence just a couple of hours away and the local economy could use the boost.

        1. I’m sorry you’re old like me do not pass Go, do not collect $200.

Fucking woke ass bitches change the name from Thule to Pituffik Space Base.
Somehow, it’s honoring the Icelandic or Eskimo, where some motherfucking shit like that… 😡.
(….” To recognize Greenlandic cultural heritage….Pituffik (pronounced bee-doo-FEEK)

          It’s “BE-A-DOOFUS”, if you ask me…

          🫵🖕🖕🖕

  7. I don’t know why the military is acting like they are trying to decide on the place. It’s going to be decided by lobbyists and politicians.

  8. Kobayashi Maru – you have to cheat to pass?

They could always train online, the Metaverse from Snow Crash seems fitting – stopping nuclear war by way of glorified chat room?

Is Natick getting anywhere on their Holodeck research?

  9. You know, I bet the Air Force is glad these folks came along. It will take the heat off them as far as razzing from the real military branches.

    1. In the 70’s they used the Air Force security people as training targets at camp bullis. They had different specially trained groups attack our post for training. You’d have to do research to find out which groups trained there. It was how they trained security police and security specialist to defend air bases in Asia. So we took a lot of shit from every branch for being white sheeters. Now the Space Force can take it and swivel their chairs for exercise.

  10. For cheap real estate, security, and environment,
I recommend Meteor Crater Space Force Base,
    near Flagstaff and Winslow, Arizona.

Bonus – This location would pump new economic and social life
into a couple of towns along the old US66.

    1. Privately owned tourist trap. Was going to visit with the wife years ago until we saw the admission price. Ended up saying “Fuck it, I’ll just watch Starman again”.

            1. Would like to visit the North Rim someday. We stayed at Ft Tuthill and drove to the canyon for a day, lunch at El Tovar. To say the canyon is breathtaking is a huge understatement. Road tripped to Winslow (to visit that corner from the Eagles song) but decided it was a bit trashy of a place. This was about 10-12 yrs ago.

  11. Do Guardians play golf? I thought they were more of the Quidditch type!

Why not buy out Richard Branson, and convert his Spaceport America (near White Sands Missile Range, NM) into Space Base America, NM!

  12. Dare I say it?
Dare! Dare! (3 bonus points for first person who gets the reference)

Roswell, New Mexico. Already got the aliens there on ice. Why the hell not?

  13. Before the latest unconstitutional armed force gets WAY out of hand, we need to go back to our founding document and roll the Space Force back into the Air Force, then the Air Force back into the AAC until such time as Congress puts forth the question to the American people. Should be an easy lift, but reminds the feds that they need OUR permission first.
