Holiday Open Thread

Happy New Year! Thank you for being a part of our community, we look forward to another year of carrying this website’s torch. It takes more than those who contribute articles to make this site what it is. Everyone played an important role, from those who do the behind the scenes technical website related issues, to those who put money into the coffers, to those who add their comments and viewpoints. Here’s to another year of this community’s making memories!

  1. FIRST FIRST? FIRST to wish all of the TAH Family a Happy, Healthy, Safe, “Prepared” New Year?

      1. Taking bets that The Tide will ROOOOOLLLL right on over the Cheater Skeeters from MI.

Poor little Seminoles got their scalps handed to them by The Big Dawgs.

Too bad that Big $ and the Cable Thugs have taken over College Ball. Bear Bryant and Vince Dooly…weep.

    1. Thought it would be closer, what with a coupla the usual suspects hanging around. We will endeavor, Good Sir…and we will persevere…or go down fighting. Now if they would just quit interrupting the Taylor Swift National Felon League Tour with a ball game, that would be great, eh? /s/

I may have to claim MPS & SGA as dependents for this past year.

      1. Congrats on your firstness. Maybe later this year we can have a competition to see who posts last on the last thread of 24.

  2. Japan is rocking it in with a 7.5 quake. Hope everyone stays safe there.

    Doesn’t look good

    1. Solar flares, earthquakes, volcanos…….
And 2024 hasn’t even got it’s pants on yet.

    2. It looks like the first pre-shock was just before midnight Zulu. The amount and magnitude of the aftershocks is impressive.

If you scroll down the list on the left until you find the pre-shock and click on it, you can watch the blue marker on the map move slightly around the area as you click through the main Japanese earthquake and aftershocks.

      Happy New Year.

    3. “That’s great it starts with an earthquake, hurricane, birds and snakes an airplane, and Lenny Bruce is not afraid, …” – from “The End of the World” by R.E.M.

      1. Lenny Bruce would get lynched by today’s “open minded” liberals. Wait, I can’t say “lynched”, it’s racist. Kinda proves my point.

  3. Happy New Year to all of you.

I found the meaning of “Hamas” this morning, and it rocked me in my seat.
I was preparing for next Sunday’s Sunday School lesson in Genesis 6 where God prepares to destroy the world by flood, but Noah found grace in His sight.
In giving the reason for the Flood, God speaks of the violence which filled the world:

Then God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence (חָמָס) because of them; and behold, I am about to destroy (שָׁחַת) them with the earth. – Genesis 6:13 NASB95

חָמָס ḥāmās =df violence, wrong; “Almost always in the Old Testament “sinful violence”. It is often a name for extreme wickedness.

The Arabic cognate means to be hard, strict, severe.” – Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament.

    Biblical usage:

    1. (Qal) to treat violently, do wrong
    2. of physical wrong
    3. of ethical wrong
    4. of physical and ethical wrong
    5. (Niphal) to be treated violently

Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was filled with violence. God looked on the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth. – Genesis 6:11-12 NASB95

    שָׁחַת šāḥaṯ =df destroy, corrupt

    Biblical Usage

to destroy, corrupt, go to ruin, decay

    1. (Niphal) to be marred, be spoiled, be corrupted, be corrupt, be injured, be ruined, be rotted
    2. (Piel)
    3. to spoil, ruin
    4. to pervert, corrupt, deal corruptly (morally)
    5. (Hiphil)
    6. to spoil, ruin, destroy
    7. to pervert, corrupt (morally)
    8. destroyer (participle)
    9. (Hophal) spoiled, ruined (participle)

Given the reports of their actions, Hamas is aptly named – extreme wicked violence that destroys others and themselves.
It seems poetically fitting, to me, that one strategy Israel is contemplating (at least) to deal with Hamas is to flood the tunnels – I don’t know if the Rabbis came up with that idea or not.

Y’all have a blessed New Year.

      1. You are welcome, ninja!

I hoped it would be of interest to some. It amazes me to see how interconnected the news and the Bible are.

  4. Happy New Year. I spend a lot of time with you good folks, and feel like even though we’ve never met, I guess, you’re my friends.

I hope that this new year brings you health, wealth, prosperity and happiness!

  5. A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO all fellow DW and DW’ettes, still love each and every one of you, and I award myself yet another Honorary First.

    ((((OVER))))

  6. *Sigh*

Another outstanding member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, who is going to his grave claiming to be a Vietnam POW…

    https://www.brownscremationservice.com/obituaries/john-cheek

“John was a veteran of the US Army Airborne Rangers, having served as a private first class soldier. He proudly served two tours in Vietnam.”

“He also survived being a P.O.W. He received many medals, including a purple heart.”

“John was also a member of the combat Vietnam motorcycle Association chapter 18 – 1 in Tennessee.”

Research indicates he ran into problems with the law in the 1970s and 1980s to include rape charges and stealing scrap iron from railroad yards.

    1. There are another 12 to 13 thousand phony Vietnam POW’s that can take their frauds to the grave. I would love to see this guy’s records

  7. IF Y’all have 24 minutes to spare, highly recommend you all watch this video..

    It is hilarious!

The most one-liners you’ll ever hear in a comedy show might be this full special from Brian Kiley. In his first ever full Dry Bar Comedy special Brian Kiley rattles off rapid fire jokes that are sure to have any fan of stand up comedy or one-liners laughing from start to finish.

The ACME joke is the best one..:)

    1. I was only four when Karen Carpenter passed, but I consider her one of the most talented and beautiful singers to have ever lived. In kindergarten, my teacher was Ms. Carpenter, and all I knew at the time was that there was a group called the Carpenters getting radio airplay, with a female singer. Was that Ms. Carpenter? Of course not, Karen was already getting some well-deserved rest far before she should have, but developing young minds are easily impressed upon.

I suppose that as a five-year-old now, I might be convinced that I could be Karen Carpenter. It seems likely that “Ms.” Carpenter circa 2024 might be a rainbow haired LBGTQ activist, posting on TikTok and with the full backing of a school board to hide my “gender identity” from my parents. “Come here, little fm2176, I brought you this fabulous dress to wear today. We’ll keep this little secret in the classroom.”

Anyway, before I go off on a tangent, I’ll just share some of my favorite videos:

  8. Happy New Year everyone! I hope your 2024 is betterer than your 2023. Keep on keepin’ on.
