Essential skills testing suspended in Oregon for equity purposes

In 2012, Oregon implemented a skills-based testing requirement that students needed to pass if they wanted to graduate high school. During the pandemic, this requirement was suspended. The Oregon Board of Education voted to extend the suspension. One argument that motivated this decision was that this test marginalized nonwhite students as well as those with disabilities.

“We are unable to ethically make a different decision at this point. It is also unethical for us to continue to require this when we know it can continue to cause harm and has had no change in how students are performing,” said Guadalupe Martinez Zapata who chairs the board.

Some parents feel removing the requirement is devaluing Oregon’s diploma by giving students an easy pass.

Mary Miller was one of two parents who spoke against the decision at the meeting. Others submitted testimony against it online.

“Any parent of a teenager knows that students are more motivated, and they study, if there is going to be a test,” Miller said.

Oregon still has graduation requirements based on course credits and schools still conduct Essential Skill Assessments. The decision merely removed the requirement that the assessment be used to determine whether students graduate.

Students who do not demonstrate proficiency through the assessment will not be required to make it up their senior year and will no longer be held back from taking other electives as a result.

            It looks like scenes from “Metropolis” for the video. The funny thing is that Lang called out the elite’s plan for the future but saw the Left as the force that could save humanity. He got that wrong; if the world of Metropolis comes to pass, it will be the leftist elite that creates that world.

              1. I’ve seen it a couple of times as well. The local PBS station would show it late on Saturday night at least once a year. Thing is, it’s been cut and edited so much over the years that I don’t think ANYONE alive has seen the complete version. According to Wiki, the closest they’ve come so far is a restoration that was performed using prints found in Argentina and New Zealand and even that version is still around 5 minutes shorter than the version that premiered in Berlin in 1927. I’m not a geek about it, but I do like watching those old German Expressionist silent films such as “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari”. Thankfully, the subtitles have English subtitles since I don’t speak German!

  11. Seems that so-called students are demonstrating that knowledge isn’t a requirement for graduation. They have no idea what the words “genocide” and “apartheid” mean. Why would anyone expect more from these brain-washed dullards?

  13. So they are saying the kids can’t read,write or do math because they are black. Nothing to do with the union teachers that failed them at every point of their education. Maybe 4 years of college,paid for by the taxpayers,and another unearned diploma will get them on the right path in life. Stupid people are easier to control I guess

As I told a very good friend of mine who is African American, “There’s more than one way to wear chains.” I get away with speaking the truth because I’m a “minority “. However, that shield may run out because I refuse to put pronouns in my email signature and I’m a conservative Hispanic. You can’t have one of us around to fuck up the program.
