I can identify with the “blacks can’t swim is racist” meme.
I went to Naval Aircrew school way back in 1984. As you can imagine swimming was a big part of the training.
I was a swimming slug, but that is beside the point and something for another rant.
One of our tasks was to swim a mile in a flight suit. Luckily for me in a pool. The night that I did it, there was also a black guy in the group with all us honkies.
I swear as God is my judge, said black guy swam the entire damn mile UNDERWATER. He would swim 30 feet or so, then push to the surface for a breath of air, then back down again about 2 feet under the water.
By the time he got to his last couple of laps, all of us honkies were walking along the edge of the pool cheering him on and when he got out all of us flaming racist bastards shook his hand and patted him on the back. Every single one of us.
Just the thought of this horrible event makes me tear up at such racism.
When I was at the NTC in the early 80s we had a black lieutenant from San Pedro [san peedro] CA who was an honest-go-God “surfer dude” — he could swim.
Les W. was just too cool for school — great guy, great lieutenant. Wonder what became of him.
