Insufferable Show-Offs, err, Royal Marines in New York Harbour(sic)

The Royal Navy has been testing out the concept of jet suit assault teams for about two years, and last year confirmed the suits could be used to stealthily board ships. They were designed by Gravity Industries and use ~1,000bhp of thrust to reach speeds of 80+mph and remain aloft for more than 10 minutes.

The firm’s founder and chief test pilot, Richard Browning, served in the British Royal Marines. Mr. Browning flew his own jet suit around the HMS Queen Elizabeth, and his company released a video that showed its operators working with the Royal Marines to operate from rigid inflatable boats and the Royal Navy offshore patrol ship HMS Tamar.

Now they’re zipping around New York City showing the flag. The pricks.

Without the benefit of stunt wires, green screen and CGI, the British Royal Marines recently experimented with a jetpack that can reach speeds of 80 mph and climb to 12,000 feet, FOX 13 reported.

The jetpack was designed and built by Richard Browning, a former Royal Marine reservist and Gravity Industries founder and chief test pilot, The Times reported.

OK, Royal Marines are BAMFS. Got it. Glad they’re on our side. They also know the US military is sorely lagging in attracting new recruits, and they bring these?   6. Maybe I missed it, but I didn’t see any of those guys carrying anything more lethal than a boarding ladder.

  7. The New All Electric Navy will have their version using a huge lithium battery backpack that when wet, the fun begins or new Banzai Missions.

  13. Does anyone know what the glide ratio of a Royal Marine is when his jetpack fails/flames out while he’s doing 80 knots at 200′ AGL?

  14. Probably not ready for armed resistance from a hostile vessel, unless they get some kind of ‘shoot where I’m looking’ gun going, too.

    But for some search parties or merchant vessel recovery, probably do some good.

  16. They say this is “STEALTHY”??? Only if you are assaulting a position manned by totally deaf people. Those are unmuffled turbo fan jet engines they are using to scoot around.

    IMO it would be a case of the clay pigeons assaulting a set of skeet shooters since while aloft the flying skeet cannot defend themselves.
